1864 Payments on Behalf of Family in Robbinston, Maine, of Civil War Soldiers Lyman Vose & Elisha Vose; in 1860s/1870s Ledger of Financial Transactions of Robbinston

Lyman Vose (1839-1929), age 24, and his brother Elisha Vose (1841-1896), age 22, serving in the 1st Maine Cavalry: payments made in 1864 to their parents and siblings in Robbinston, Maine.

Found on numbered page 9 - with the account of Philip Caffrey in the lower portion of the page - in a ledger of Robbinston, Maine, financial transactions from the mid 1860s to the 1870s.

Payments made on behalf of:

Both Lyman and Elisha, Jr., survived the war, as did their father Elisha, who served in Company D of the 1st Maine Cavalry and was wounded at Shepherdstown, Virginia, on July 16, 1863.  Worryingly, a similar record of injury on the same date at the same place appears for Elisha's son Elisha, Jr. Perhaps the records were accidentally conflated or perhaps they were serving together and both wounded in the same battle, with the elder Elisha returning home to Robbinston.

Lyman Vose (1839-1929) was born about 1839 and married three times: 1) Alice Brooks (1848-1885) in 1867, with whom he had several children; 2) Alice Elizabeth Foss in 1887; Jane Goulding in 1898.  He served as a selectman for the town of Robbinston.  He spent time in Houlton, Maine, and in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before returning to the Robbinston area.  He died at nearby Calais, Maine, in 1929.

This record from the United States Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards indicates that Lyman rose from a private to a sergeant in Company E of the 1st Maine Cavalry.  Another such record indicates his death on 9 February 1929.

Elisha Vose, Jr. (1841-1896) -  Either Elisha was wounded at Shepherdstown, Virginia, on the same day as his father, or some of their records have become conflated.  Elisha, Jr.'s Find a Grave memorial indicates that he had married a Charlotte/ "Lottie".  She may have been the "Widow Lowe", whom Elisha married in St. Paul, Minnesota, mentioned in this necrology in the Maine Bugle, Volumes 4 and 5, published in 1897.

William H. Campbell, serving in Company G of the 11th Maine: payments made in 1864 and 1865 to his parents and siblings in Robbinston, Maine.

A record for a 22 year old William, in the Maine State Archives, reveals that his place of birth was Robbinston, Maine, with his then residence at some point after mustering out on August 14, 1863 as Houlton, Maine, and his occupation as farmer. Another Maine State Archives record, noting William's age as 23 years and 7 months, points to his then residence as Bristol, Maine, where he was working as a farmer.

1864/1865 Payments on Behalf of Family in Robbinston, Maine, of Civil War Soldier Albert Gallatin Buck; in 1860s/1870s Ledger of Financial Transactions of Robbinston

Albert Gallatin Buck (1822-1901), age 41, serving in Company D of the First Maine Heavy Artillery: payments made in 1864 and 1865 to his widowed mother in Robbinston, Maine.

Found on numbered page 7 in a ledger of Robbinston, Maine, financial transactions from the mid 1860s to the 1870s.

Payments were made on behalf of Albert's mother Mehitable (Vose) Buck (1800-1899), widow of Ebenezer Buck (1794-1836), who had drowned many years earlier.

Albert Gallatin Buck was born 31 December 1922 at Robbinston, Maine.  One of his siblings, his youngest brother Sgt. Ebenezer Randolph Buck (1835-1863), died in a New Bern, North Carolina, hospital in 1863.

Albert enlisted on July 24, 1862, sworn and subscribed at Bangor, Maine, on August 9, 1862; 18th Regiment.  He mustered in on August 21, 1862 and mustered out on June 27, 1865.  Another record notes that he was a sergeant in the 1st Regiment, Maine Heavy Artillery.

After the war, he farmed at Robbinston, Maine, and served in various town offices, including as town clerk and treasurer.  A sheet in the United States Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War, 1890 notes Albert's health problems.  He died in 1901, apparently having never married.

Albert's FindaGrave memorial notes that he is buried in the Brewer Cemetery in Robbinston, Maine. This cemetery may also be known as the Picnic Hill Cemetery, as that is the name of the cemetery on a record in Maine Veterans Cemetery Records, 1676-1918.
