Baby Book of Edward Hellwig Wagner (1902-1982), California Native; would like to Reunite with Family

Baby book of Edward Hellwig Wagner (1902-1982)

This is a guest post, from a person who has come into possession of this wonderful book and would very much like to see it returned to the Wagner family.  Write to the email address in the right margin under Inquiries, and your email will be passed along.

The baby of the book is Edward Hellwig Wagner. He has an established FamilySearch page. I will add a link at the end here. The family lived in San Joaquin, California. According to the FamilySearch page, the family had immigrated a couple generations prior to California from Germany. This book contains names of family, places they lived, and just a lot of details that give this family history some texture.

I don’t need this book. It does not to pertain to me or any of my research. I am so very happy to pass it on to anyone researching this family.

The tree on Family Search

More on Edward, who grew up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School.

Edward Hellwig Wagner (1902-1982)

  • Born 7 February 1902 in Stockton, California, to Edward Charles Wagner (1869-1940) and Helen Augusta (Hellwig) Wagner (1873-1951), "Nellie.
  • 1910 - at home in Stockton, California, with his parents
  • 1920 Census, at home in Stockton, California, with his parents
  • The 1930 Census, at home in Stockton, California, with his parents, working as an assistant manager at an investment firm.
  • The 1940 Census , at home in Stockton, California, with his parents; manager of an airport in or around Stockton.
  • His World War II draft card shows that he was living on his own in Carson City, Nevada, and working for Pathfinder Flying Services.
  • By 1950 he was ranching in Garberville, California and living with his widowed mother.
  • Death - 1982

If you are a member of this Wagner family, please make the connection or share to a Wagner family member.

c1900 Photograph of Jimmy Raeish, "friend of Carl Ross"; by a studio in Calais, Maine

c1900 photograph of a young man identified as "Jimmy Raeish, friend of Carl Ross". The photograph was taken at the studio of H. D. McKay of Main Street, Calais, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

James Albert Raeish (1884-1929) was born  in Auburn, New York, son of Albert Raeish and Ada (Lyon) Raeish. The 1900 Federal Census of Calais, Maine, shows that James was living there with his mother and father, who was working as an electrician.

In 1910 in Oregon, James, by then an attorney, married Melva Jane Johnson, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick.  She was the daughter of Margaret Gertrude (MacLellan) and John M. Johnson, who moved the family to Calais, after Margaret's death.

Carl Ross was presumably Carl Wilbur Ross (1883-1950), a native of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, across the St. Croix River from Calais, and son of Henry Butler Ross and Lilia Miranda (Bridges) Ross.  In 1908 in Massachusetts, Carl married Eva Celeste Fraser, also a New Brunswick native, daughter of John A. Fraser and Florence Melva (MacLellan) Fraser.  Carl and Eva then moved to Portland, Oregon.

The MacLellan connection between Melva and Eva presumably explains how James and Melva came to meet.

Melva died in 1950 in California. It appears that James married twice after that. He died in 1974 in Alameda, California.

If you have information on any of these people, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1906 Letter Detailing Aftermath of San Francisco Earthquake; presumably written by William Edgar Purdy (1854-1927)

Letter dated 30 July 1906 written by, presumably, William Edgar Purdy (1854-1927), a New York native living in San Francisco. The letter details the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake of a few months earlier.

The letter recipient, Aunt Mary, may have been William's paternal aunt, Mary Bethia Purdy (1821-1907).
The name Ransom is mentioned several times - presumably William's good friend or possibly relative, Ransom Pratt (1857-1932), who would marry William's widow, Helen Price (Throop) Purdy (1856-1945) in 1928.
Although William was living in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake, he later moved to Berkeley, California. When he died, he was vice-president and cashier of Bausch and Lomb Optical Company of California. He and Helen had three children.
Transcription - please weigh in with any needed corrections

San Francisco
30 July 1906
Dear Aunt Mary:-
For neglected writing because I've been so very busy for the past two months. You wrote asking some questions as to the Earthquake. I presume Ransom told you all about them, but I will tell of a few things he probably did not know about. First, you remember the great big Colliseum on top of Strawberry Hill. Well that was entirely destroyed and a part of the great Concrete mass rolled down the Hill in the Lake. All around the lake in the road were cracks all around the Lake. If the thing had kept up ten seconds longer the whole hill would have been down and the water let out of the Lake. The Music Stand built by Claus Spreckels [Claus Spreckels (1828-1908] was very badly damaged and is closed since the Shakeup. A great many of the things were ruined and it will be months before it is open again. There are seventeen to eighteen thousand people still living in tents yet in the parks. Jefferson Park is full of tents and so are several others. It's a dirty windy raw summer and it must be mighty uncomfortable.

The McAllister cars don't run yet but expect to start up this week sometime. We all had to walk to Divisadero Street and are getting very tired of it. Not half of the car lines are running yet and won't be for months. No Hayes or Haight cars nor Larkin Street nor Sacramento St. Nor California St nor Jackson or Washington Sts. Nor Powell St nor Howard St and several others. The streets are very badly damaged and will have to be largely rebuilt. Some streets have sunk six fee or more and are crooked.

I understand the animals at the Chutes made an awful racket during the Earthquake, None got away.  The dust down town is something frightful. The streets won't be clear of bricks for months yet tho hundreds and thousands of teams are hauling. Wages awful high and demanding more. We think the street car men will all strike soon. Some of them are striking even now. I don't see where the thing is going to stop. The Unions here are very strong and are taking advantage of the situation. They will ruin the City if they don't get twice what they are worth.

We had a light shock Sunday morning. In fact we get little shakes every few days. We are getting used to them and don't mind if they don't do any damage. Still they are not pleasant as we don't know how things are down below. We have to boil the water we drink as it is not good yet. I have had the basement strengthened so it will stand the next shakeup if it comes. Of course we won't expect any more big ones.

You ought to see the one story buildings down town. Fillmore St is so crowded you can scarcely get along. Then comes Van Ness. That is going to be the big retail street the whole length from where it strikes Market clear over to Fort Mason.
Fine stores, too, with their flags and streamers flying. Then from there the fire burned. But it is building up clear to the ferry. Hundreds and thousands of buildings. I never saw anything like it and never expect to again. It is simply like magic the way the buildings spring up. If the Unions don't kill it,  the City will surely rebuild in a few years.
I hope you are feeling better again. Ransom was much pleased with his visit to you. All join in much love.
Faithfull, W. E. Purdy

P.S.
When McCallister cars start, they will only run to the Power House near us for a time. No more cable in the City. All overhead trolleys. It will get us down town quicker. But it's a change [or shame] all the same.
W. E. P.

1910 Real Photo Postcard of 5 Month Old Jesse William Greenlief, Postmarked Newton, Iowa

Real photo postcard postmarked August 19, 1910 at Newton, Iowa, showing Jesse William Greenlief at age 5 months; addressed to Miss Mary Hughes at 738 West 20th Street, Des Moines, Iowa.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested - while respecting the privacy of living or recently deceased people:

Jesse William Greenlief was born March 9, 1910 at Newton Township, Iowa, the son of Charles E. Greenlief and Jomattie Ellen (Rumbaugh) Greenlief; their fifth child.  The postcard notes "This is Gracie's Brother".  Gracie was Delta Grace Greenlief, born in 1899, presumably Mary Hughes was Grace's friend or caretaker.

On July 21, 1929 at Huntington Park, Los Angeles, California, Jesse married Marjorie Elizabeth Castner, also an Iowa native, born October 16, 1910 at Union Township, daughter of James Miller Castner and Lucile (Morrisey) Castner.  Another record, from California, County Birth, Marriage, and Death Records, 1849-1980, gives the date as July 23, 1929.  At the time they were both living at Long Beach, California.  They would have at least two children, a daughter and son.  U.S. Censuses show that they lived in the Los Angeles, California area and at Seattle, Washington.

Jesse died at Toronto, Ontario in 1974; Marjorie died in 1984.  They're buried in the Carling Cemetery at Carling, Ontario, Canada.  Jesse's Social Security death record gives his address as the U.S. Consulate, but I don't know if that means he worked there or if they handle the deaths of U.S. residents in Canada.

I don't know the identity of Miss Mary Hughes but note that there was a Mary Hughes, born about 1903, who is enumerated in the 1910 Census as living on 20th Street in Des Moines, the daughter of Ernest M. Hughes and Edith (Todd) Hughes.  If this Mary was the recipient of the postcard, she would have been about age 7 at the time, not out of the ordinary.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or an identity for Miss Mary Hughes, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Please be careful when mentioning living or recently deceased people.

1879-1895 Autograph Album of Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree of Hancock, Maine

Autograph album presented to Mrs. Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree by her sister-in-law Elvira J. (Cushman) Colby.

Some of the inscribers, if not Sarah herself, had gone to California, as indicated in their inscriptions, but I believe most, if not all, returned to Maine at some point.

[Note:  Many of the inscribers in this album also inscribed pages in the autograph album of Ora Spratt Jordan of Otis, Maine, featured in another post; in fact, Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree herself, and husband Asa inscribed pages!]

The presentation page in Sarah's album:

The album measures a bit more than 4" by 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 15 of Sarah's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Surnames in the Album

(Cushman) Colby inscribed another page in the album, and her husband Edmond Harvey Colby, who was Sarah's brother, inscribed a 3-page sentiment.  At the time they were living at Columbia, California, but I don't know if Sarah visited them there or they inscribed their pages while back in Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Sarah Alexander Colby was born January 27, 1813 at Ellsworth, Maine, daughter of Eli K. Colby and Sarah Hardison (Jordan) Colby.  Another of Sarah's siblings inscribed a page in the album.  She was Charlotte Christiana (Colby) Kingman, whose husband Joseph Morrison Kingman inscribed the left facing page.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship with album owner Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree [and there may have been more who didn't express a kinship] or who were likely relatives:

On January 2, 1838, Sarah Alexander Colby married Asa Crabtree, son of George and Rebecca (Hopkins) Crabtree.

Asa died in 1893 and Sarah in 1899.  They're buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Hancock, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Susan E. Daly was born about August 1865 in California, the daughter of Richard Henry Daly and Susan (Bedford) Daly.

Judge Daly was born in Virginia; records for Susan (Bedford) Daly give her birth state as South Carolina or Georgia.  The link below gives her birthplace as Augusta, Georgia.  Read more about the colorful character of Richard H. Daly here.

Two of Susan's brothers inscribed pages in her album.  James H. Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on May 23, 1881.

Susan's brother John Bedford Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on January 4, 1882.

Susan's sister Virginia (Daly) Smith, "Jennie", inscribed a page on September 28, but she didn't write a year.  Jennie's husband Albert F. Smith inscribed the left facing page.

I believe the album owner Susan was the Susan E. Daly who married widower Rev. John James Nathaniel Kenney on October 14, 1909 at Fresno, California.   I didn't find any children from Rev. Kenney's marriage to Susan, but he did have some children from his first marriage.

Both Susan and Rev. Kenney died in 1929.  They're buried in the Mountain View Cemetery at Fresno, California, with Daly and Kenney relatives.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship relationship [and there may have been others]

  • Mary B.  Susie's cousin.  Could she have been Mary Bedford?
  • Lily Bedford; inscribed at Anderson, no state written, [but there was a Lily Bedford at Anderson, California], on October 10, 1882.  Sue's cousin
  • Olive McCarley; "your loving Aunty"; inscribed at Shingletown, California, on September 28, 1882.  She was Olive Ann (Bedford) McCarley, sister of Susie's mother Susan E. (Bedford) Daly.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Inscribers in the Album
  • W. E. ?, possibly Somes; from or inscribed at Sitka, Alaska, on November 12, 1884
  • Ida; inscribed on January 24, 1882.  Susie's schoolmate
  • Mary B.  Susie's cousin.  Could she have been Mary Bedford?
  • Leonora; possibly the Leonora Reynolds who inscribed another page.
  • Fannie Ashman, "your Hoosier friend", of Frankfort, Indiana; inscribed at Fresno, California, on October 15, 1887.  "The judge shall not be forgotten.  Oh, no, he is one of California's 'specimens'".  I'd love to know more about that story...

1880s Autograph Album of Warren Thornton Hohenshell of Munster, Illinois; with Later Inscriptions by His Daughter Jean Sara Hohelshell

1880s autograph album that belonged to Warren Thornton Hohenshell of Munster, Illinois; with several inscriptions by his daughter Jean Sara Hohenshell in the 1890s and 1900.

Warren wrote his name on an end paper and penned a page of welcome to his inscribers.

The album measures approximately 6" by 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of about 20 of Warren's friends and daughter.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Warren Thornton Hohenshell was born on May 3, 1858 in Indiana, the son of George W. Hohenshell and Elizabeth (Coan) Hohenshell.   Warren married Iowa native Ida Mary Eliza Heald about 1888, according to the information in the 1900 Census of Elsinore, California.  Warren and Ida made their home at Elsinore and later in Merced County, where they farmed.  Warren reportedly pioneered the almond industry in his area.  I found a newspaper article about an explosion at his almond distillery that resulted in severe burns to Warren and another man.

Warren also worked as a photographer at Merced, California, from 19105-1910 and sold Studebakers.  The couple had at least one child, daughter Jean Sarah Hohenshell, who inscribed several pages in the album, including the one below, inscribed on March 4, 1900.

By 1938, Warren and Ida had moved to Pasadena, California.  Warren died in 1940 and Ida in 1943.   If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1879-1884 Autograph Album of Myra of Santa Cruz, California, and/or Soquel, California

1879-1884 autograph album that belonged to a Myra, presumably of Santa Cruz, California, and/or Soquel, California.  The earlier inscriptions, dated 1880, were inscribed at Santa Cruz by Myra's schoolmates.  The inscriptions from 1882-1884 were penned at Soquel, California.

Myra was given the album by her Uncle Will.

The album measures approximately 6" by 4-1/2"and is a softcover; it  may have had covers at one point.  The album contains the sentiments of 26 of Myra's schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

If you have an idea of who Myra was, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  I found a Myra Phillips from the correct time frame at Santa Cruz, California, the adopted daughter of W. H. and Myra Hobbs.  However, it's possible that Myra was a nickname for someone else.

A few pages from the album:

S. L. Grazia [not sure of initials]; inscribed at Santa Cruz, California, on January 16, 1880

Nellie Handy; inscribed at Santa Cruz, California, on February 24, 1880.  Myra's schoolmate

Tessa J. Mulhern; inscribed at Santa Cruz, California, on April 20, 1880

Nellie Nugent; inscribed at Soquel, California, on March 16, 1882

Again, if you have a theory as to the identity of album owner Myra, or if you have information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
