Florence Emily Brown was born in October 1889 in Illinois, the daughter of Simon Mathias Brown and Katie A. (Arnold) Brown.  I believe Florence had ten siblings, at least five of whom inscribed pages in her album.

  • Cousin Ada Brown; inscribed at Old Ripley, Illinois, on March 26, 1900.  Florence's cousin
  • Cousin Lessie Davis; inscribed at Pocahontas, Illinois, on November 2, 1901.  Florence's cousin

Florence Emily Brown was a schoolteacher before she married farmer Charles Albert Thompson sometime after 1910.   They had at least two children.   Charles died in 1968 and Florence in 1971; they're buried with one of their children in the Brown Cemetery at Old Ripley, Illinois.

Katie and Charles lived in Owen, Illinois, and Rockton, Illinois.  Charles died in 1941, and Katie in 1964.  They're buried in the Rocktown Township Cemetery at Rockton, Illinois.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s Autograph Album of Belle Payton of Stanton, Illinois; possibly Carrie Belle Payton

Autograph album presented to Belle Payton by her parents on November 20, 1884, which was a Thursday, possibly Thanksgiving Day.

I believe Belle was Carrie Belle Payton, born December 1, 1872, daughter of Arthur Payton and Caroline C. (Corder) Payton.  Two of Belle's sisters inscribed pages in her album, Maud and Maggie, and it happens that Carrie Belle Payton had sisters by that name.

The album measures approximately 4-1/4" by 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 32 of Belle's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teachers.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research and assuming Belle Payton was Carrie Belle Payton - corrections, alternate theories and additions requested:

Carrie Belle Payton was born December 1, 1872 in Illinois, the daughter of Arthur Payton and Caroline Cordelia C. (Corder) Payton, who were born in Kentucky and Indiana respectively.  Carrie Belle married William M. Davis and had, I think, three children: Mildred, Willard and Della.

Carrie, William and at least two of their children are buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery at Mayview, Illinois.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you feel that Belle Payton was not Carrie Belle Payton, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1901 Memorial Card: Abigail (Reed) Lowther, who died in Michigan at the age of 78

Memorial card printed in 1901 on the occasion of the death of Abigail (Reed) Lowther at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 14 days.

The card was found with a cabinet photograph of a woman who may or may not be Abigail herself.  There's no identification or studio imprint to provide a clue.  Nothing on reverse.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Abigail's death record indicates:
  •  Abigail was born August 29, 1822 in Upper Canada, the daughter of Joshua Reed and Elizabeth (Alward) Reed.  At least one record has Abigail's father's name as Josiah.  Additionally, an index for the 1821 Buffalo, New York, marriage of Joshua and Elizabeth has Elizabeth's maiden name as Alworth.
  • Abigail was a widow when she died at Leonidas, Michigan, on March 13, 1901, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 16 days [at variance with the information on the memorial card]
  • Abigail was 18 when she married and had 6 children, 5 of whom were still living at the time of her death
  • Abigail died of enteritis and the complications of old age
  • The informant was J. R. Lowther of Leonidas, Michigan - Abigail's son James Riley Lowther - hopefully the information he supplied was totally correct
Abigail married Lemuel E. Lowther, about 1840 if the information on her death record is correct.  She and Lemuel raised their family at Knox, Ohio, or in Knox County, Ohio; and Leonidas, Michigan.  It seems that at some point in the 1860s, Lemuel and Abigail parted ways.  Lemuel died in 1881 and is buried in the Asbury Cemetery at Dennison, Illinois.  Abigail is buried in the Abscota Cemetery at Burlington, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions, or if your family photographs reveal that the woman in the cabinet photograph above is definitely Abigail (Reed) Lowther, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1907 Snapshot of Horace & Dolph Turner, Presumably Horace K. and Rudolphus K. Turner of Newton, Massachusetts

Photograph, taken in March 1907, of two children identified as Horace & Dolph Turner - or Horace and Dolph of Turner.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

They were presumably Horace Kibbe Turner, Jr., born September 15, 1905 at Newton, Massachusetts, and Rudolphus Kibbe Turner, born April 10, 1902 at Newton, Massachusetts.

They were the sons of Horace Kibbe Turner and Lilla (Lattimer) Turner, who were born in Illinois and Ohio, respectively.  Horace, Sr., graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1895 and produced art subjects for school and colleges.  According to Horace, Jr's, birth record, the family lived in the Newtonville section of Newton.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you recognize the boys from your family photographs and feel they are the boys in the photograph or different boys, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Please be careful about adding information about people who may be living.

1870s Account Book with a Connection to Bloomington, Illinois

Small account book, approximately 5-3/4" by 3-1/2", that apparently belonged to a homeowner or boarding home owner, as the supplies purchased were mostly related to kitchen and home.

Images of all pages with handwriting appear at the end of this post.

The front cover has some handwriting but is very difficult to decipher.  There appear to be two names, Mrs. Buelt or Buell or Bonelt or variant in account with J. Parker or Palmer or longer surname.

The inside front cover has another name, Mrs. C. A. B ?, in what appears to be a more contemporary hand, but not necessarily, perhaps that of the owner or relative or friend.   Whether or not the account book owner lived at Bloomington, Illinois, I don't know.  Nor do I know if the initials refer to herself or her husband.

Crowdsourced possibilities for her surname:  [and there are undoubtedly more]

BirchBrinkBuck or Buch
BreckBruckBurk
BrickBruhBush

Interestingly, a fellow family historian has found that there were several men named C. A. Buck in Bloomington, Illinois during the time frame of the account book and after.

If any of these names, or attempts at names, rings a bell with you, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Two 1885 Autograph Albums of Edith W. Bryant of Princeton, Illinois

Two autograph albums commenced in 1885 by owner Edith W. Bryant of Princeton, Illinois.  The cover of the larger album, which measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5", is shown above.  It was given to Edith at Christmas in 1885 by Harry, presumably her brother Harry G. Bryant, who also inscribed a page in the album, toward the end.

The smaller album, which measures approximately 5" by 2-3/4", was tucked inside the larger album; it may be missing its front cover and perhaps a page or more.  The first page shown is the ownership page.

The albums contain the sentiments of Edith's relatives, friends and schoolmates: the larger album with 37 pages of sentiments and the smaller with 19.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Edith W. Bryant was born December 1, 1878 at Princeton, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth (Hughes) Bryant, and the youngest of 9 siblings, some of whom inscribed pages in one or both of the albums. Facing pages in the smaller album were inscribed by Edith's parents.

The next page in that album was inscribed by C. B. Hughes, who was possibly Edith's maternal grandmother Cassandra B. (Jones) Hughes.

Siblings who inscribed pages in one or both albums:
  • Guy Arthur Bryant
  • Harry G. Bryant, who was presumably the Harry who gave Edith the larger album; he also inscribed a page.
  • Lester P. Bryant
  • "Cassa" Bryant; Cassandra H. Bryant
  • Henrietta Bryant
  • R. C. Bryant; Ralph Clement Bryant
  • G. A. Bryant; Guy Arthur Bryant
Other relatives, either by blood or marriage, who indicated a relationship, and there were likely others who did not:
  • Lou; Edith's cousin
  • Jennie L. Bryant; presumably a cousin
  • Hattie Bryant; Edith's cousin
  • Lester R. Bryant; Edith's paternal uncle Lester Raymond Bryant
  • Minnie H. Bryant; presumably a cousin
  • Clement Freeman; Edith's uncle
  • M. C. Hughes of Washington, Illinois; Edith's uncle, presumably maternal uncle Morris Clark Hughes
  • Flora Hughes; presumably Flora (Stormer) Hughes, wife of Morris Clark Hughes
  • Emilada Lanktree of Hennepin, Illinois; Edith's cousin
  • Julia Mathews; Edith's cousin
  • Lucy Olds and Edna Olds of Wyanet, Illinois; Edith's cousins
  • Lucy Shearer of Streator, Illinois; Edith's maternal aunt Lucy L. (Hughes) Shearer, wife of Frederick S. Shearer
Not long after 1900, Edith W. Bryant married Curtis Dunbar Brigham, son of Joseph Hardy Brigham and Carrie (Dunbar) Brigham.  They lived for a time in Kansas, where Curtis worked in real estate and life insurance and then returned to farm in Illinois.  I believe they had four children: first, two sons, and then, two daughters.

Edith died in 1939, and Curtis in 1949.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers in both albums listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
