1880s-1904 Autograph Album of Minnie Bell Gray of Morgan Centre, Vermont, and Beebe Plain, Vermont and Quebec

1880s-1904 autograph album that belonged to Minnie Bell Gray of Morgan Center, Vermont, and/or Beebe Plain, Vermont.

When the final border between Vermont and Quebec was set, it split the community of Beebe Plain in two.  Some of the inscribers in Minnie's album hailed from Beebe Plain, Vermont, now a village in the town of Derby.  Even more inscribers hailed from Beebe Plain, Quebec, now a village in the town of Stanstead.

Minnie wrote her name on the title page.

Below, an alphabetical list of inscribers' surnames: [See an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, at the end of this post.]

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to a record in Vermont Vital Records, 1720-1908, Minnie Bell Gray was born September 28, 1867 at Morgan, Vermont, the daughter of J. A. Gray and Abbie C. Gray.  They were Joseph A. Gray and Abigail Caroline (Bartlett) Gray.

Minnie's parents and her maternal grandparents inscribed pages in the album.  Minnie's father, Joseph A. Gray, inscribed the left page, below:

Minnie's mother, Abbie Caroline (Bartlett) Gray, inscribed the left page, below:

Minnie's maternal grandmother, Clarissa (Bryant) Bartlett, inscribed the right page, below:

Minnie's maternal grandfather, Byram Bartlett, inscribed the page below and gave his date and place of birth as September 22, 1808 at Morgan, Vermont.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship:
  • Bunny Gray, Minnie's brother; he may have been Joseph B. Gray
  • Fred A. Gray, Minnie's brother
  • Joseph H. Gilmore, Minnie's future husband, who inscribed his page in 1882 - see the page he inscribed farther below
  • Oldis Cleora Gilmore, Minnie's daughter - see the page she inscribed farther below

Several other people with the surnames Bartlett and Gray inscribed pages and were presumably Minnie's relatives - see the alphabetical list of inscribers at the end of this post.

On March 24, 1885 at Morgan, Vermont, Minnie Bell Gray married Calais, Maine, native Joseph H. Gilmore [shown as Joseph A. on their marriage record], son of John and Ellen Gilmore.   Joseph, who gave his address as Lewiston, Maine, inscribed a page in Minnie's album on April 13, 1882 at Morgan Centre, Vermont.

Minnie and Joseph had at least two children, son Gerald Harrison Gilmore, born November 2, 1888, and daughter Oldis Cleora Gilmore, who was born September 4, 1893, both at Morgan, Vermont.  Oldis inscribed the latest entry, on November 11, 1904, in her mother's album, left page, below:

Minnie and Joseph died in 1940.  They're buried in the Center Cemetery at Morgan, Vermont, along with their children and other relatives.

1881-1908 Autograph Album of Mrs. Mary Moore of Corinna, Maine; presumably Quebec native Mary J. (Waldron) Moore or Mower, Wife of Charles H. Moore or Mower

1881-1908 autograph album that belonged to Mrs. Mary Moore, presumably of Corinna, Maine, and presumably Quebec native Mary Jane (Waldron) Moore, who married Charles H. Moore, or Mower, in 1883 and then lived at Corinna, Maine.

There's no ownership page, but a few pages are inscribed to Mary and to Mrs. Moore, and several inscribers mention a family relationship, all factors that lead to a presumed identity of Mary Jane (Waldron) Moore.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 44 of Mary's relatives and friends in Maine; Lowell, Massachusetts; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Inverness, Quebec.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct and hopefully with the correct Mrs. Mary Moore - corrections, additions and alternate theories of identity requested:

Assuming that Mary was Mary Jane (Waldron) Moore, her gravestone notes that she was born March 24, 1849 and died August 8, 1925.  I believe Mary was born at or near Compton, Quebec, the daughter of Thomas Waldron and Martha (Morse) Waldron.  One of Mary's siblings was Submit Waldron, "Mittie", who also made the move to Maine and three of whose children with husband Frank Richardson inscribed pages in Mary's album.

Judging from the residence of some inscribers, Mary appears to have spent time at Lowell, Massachusetts, before moving to Maine, perhaps as one of the many Canadians attracted to Lowell to work in the textile mills.  She acquired inscriptions from residents of Saint Albans, Maine, in 1881 and 1882, though the 1881 Census of Clifton, Compton, Quebec, show Mary and sister "Mittie" [Submit], living with their parents; Mary was working at a cotton factory.

On January 24, 1883, Mary J. Waldron married Charles Henry Moore, son of Samuel Moore and Mehitable (Strout ?) Moore.  Samuel was born in 1822 at Albion, Maine.  I haven't found a death record for Charles' first wife Martha (Murdough) Moore, with whom he had sons at Albion, Maine.  Charles later farmed at Saint Albans, Maine, where he, wife Martha and son Albert are listed in the 1880 Census.  One of the inscribers in Mary's album, Will Hamilton, was also living with them.

Charles may have been the C. H. Moore who inscribed a page in Mary's album at Lowell, Massachusetts, on February 14, 1881.  Was Mary then living at Lowell, and Charles also, or was Charles visiting and happened to meet Mary there?  Or perhaps C. H. Moore was someone else entirely.

People who mentioned a relationship or could be assume to have one [see the list of inscribers for more information]:
  • Alphonso N. Moore, presumably related to Mary's husband Charles Henry Moore
  • Evie B. Moore, niece, of Troy, Maine, presumably related to Mary's husband Charles Henry Moore
  • Mrs. Lizzie Moore of Northfield, Maine
  • Minne E. Moore of Northfield, Maine
  • Augusta M. Richardson, niece
  • Freddie Richardson, nephew
  • Jesse E. Richardson of Fairfield, Maine; nephew

Inscribers with the surname Mussen and Gordon of Inverness, Quebec may have been relatives of the Waldron family.  Some of the Gordon family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts.  One of them, Belle C. Gordon, inscribed a page in Mary's album.

Charles Henry Moore died in 1916, and Mary in 1925.  They're buried in the Corinna Center Cemetery at Corinna, Maine.  If you have corrections, additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribed listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1874+ Autograph Album of Ellen Sikes of Suffield, Connecticut

Autograph album started in 1874 by Ellen Sikes of Suffield, Connecticut.

The album contains inscriptions from many of Ellen's relatives in the Sikes family and others, as well as several inscriptions from people at Gardiner, Maine.

One inscriber mentioned C.L.I., which was the Connecticut Literary Institute, still in existence today as Suffield Academy.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 72 of Ellen's friends, relatives and possibly schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Ellen Sikes was born May 8, 1855 at Suffield, Connecticut, the daughter of Oliver and Sarah (Smith) Sikes.  I believe Ellen had three siblings, one of whom, Adelia Sikes , "Delia", inscribed a page in Ellen's album on April 2, 1875.

In 1882 Delia would marry Allen Wilson, who is presumably the Allen Wilson of Suffield, Connecticut, who inscribed a page in Ellen's album on March 28, 1876.

Also in 1882, Ellen would marry George Farquhar, son of Alexander Farquhar and [possibly] Elizabeth [?] Farquhar of Hinchinbrooke, Quebec, where George was born in the 1850s.  George, then living at Suffield, Connecticut, inscribed a page in Ellen's album on August 17, 1880.

Intriguingly, Jennie Platt, also from Hinchinbrooke, Quebec, inscribed a page at Suffield, Connecticut, on January 13, 1875.

George and Ellen, who had at least five children, farmed at Suffield, Connecticut.  I haven't found death records, but I believe that George died in 1912 and Ellen in 1936.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

c1885 Cabinet Photograph of Frank Rodrigue; taken by the Renouf Studio of Biddeford, Maine

Circa 1885 cabinet photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as Frank Rodrigue.  The photograph was taken by the Renouf Studio of Biddeford, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Presumably Frank Rodrigue is the Frank Rodrigue born June 8, 1866 at St. Francois de Beauceville, Quebec, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen on August 30, 1890, while he was living at Biddeford, Maine.

This Frank had first arrived in the United States at Skowhegan, Maine, on April 10, 1883, presumably following the "Canada Road" [more information at the Old Canada Road Historical Society].  Witnesses on his naturalization form were Charles Rodrigue; Joseph Rodrigue; and H. I. Lord.

Were Charles Rodrigue and Joseph Rodrigue brothers or cousins to Frank?

If you have further information on the Frank Rodrigue described, or if you believe Frank was another person, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Cabinet Photograph of Mrs. Octave Lafond of West Gardner, Massachusetts

Cabinet photograph of a woman identified on the reverse as Mrs. Octave Lafond of Reagan Street, West Gardner, Massachusetts.  I believe the person providing the identification meant Regan Street.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Octave Lafond was born January 7, 1852 at Nicolet, Quebec, son of Gregoire Lafond and Angele (Beausoleil) Lafond.

Based on the age of the photograph, unless the identification was written at a later date, Mrs. Octave Lafond was likely his first wife Delia (Normandin) Lafond, born about 1852 in Canada, daughter of Louis Normandin and Marie (Lariviere) Normandin.   Delia died January 4, 1906.

On October 3, 1908 at Gardner, Massachusetts, in a second marriage for both, widower Octave Lafond married Lea (Galarneau) Filion, who was born about 1855 in Quebec, daughter of Joseph Galarneau and Florence (Belanger) Galarneau.  I haven't found information yet on Lea's first husband, Mr. Filion.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, and if you can identify which Mrs. Octave Lafond is in the photograph, based on your family research, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card for Alphonse Pratt, Died in 1942 at Lewiston, Maine

Memorial card printed on the occasion of the death of Alphonse Pratt, who died at Lewiston, Maine, on April 19, 1942.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Eusebe Alphonse Edward Pratt was born March 26, 1894 at Montague, Massachusetts, the son of Louis and Zenaide (Loiselle) Pratte, originally of Quebec.   His World War I draft registration card gives his birth date and place as March 21, 1894 at Turners Falls, Massachusetts.

Alphonse was the brother of Alexandre Pratte, whose memorial card is featured in another post.

If Alphonse ever married, I didn't find a record of it.  He was living alone at the time of the 1940 Census of Lewiston and working as a sausage maker.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1911 Memorial Card of Death of Agathe Landry at Lewiston, Maine, on November 14, 1911

Memorial card printed on the occasion of the death of Mlle. Agathe Landry, who died November 14, 1911 at Lewiston, Maine, at the age of 19 years, 6 months and 21 days.

According to the card, she was born at St. Pascal de Kamouraska, Quebec.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

According to the Drouin Records, Marie Agathe Almanda Landry was baptised in April 1892 at St. Pascal, Quebec.  She was the daughter of Etienne and Marie Louise Lumina (Levesque) Landry.  The family came to Maine about 1907 and settled at Lewiston, Maine.  Agathe had at least eight siblings, I believe.
