1890s Autograph Album of Clara M. Sherrick of Amanda, Ohio - Inscriptions & Calling Cards

1890s autograph album that belonged to a Clara, presumably Clara M. Sherrick, of Amanda, Ohio.   The album contains both inscriptions and calling cards.

Two clues to Clara's identify:
  • An inscription by "Mother" gives a place name of Amanda, Ohio
  • In his inscription, Henry Weaver Sherrick calls Clara his cousin

The album measures approximately 9-1/4" by 6" and contains the sentiments or calling cards of nearly sixty of Clara's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Assuming I have the correct Clara,  Clara M. Sherrick was born May 6, 1876 at Berne Township in Fairfield County, Ohio, the daughter of John Sherrick and Rebecca (Syfert or Seifert) Sherrick.  It was presumably Rebecca penned the first inscription in the album; inscribed at Amanda, Ohio, on January 8, 1893.

I lost track of Clara after the 1900 Census of Berne Township, Ohio, at which time she was living on her parents' farm with two siblings.  By 1910, John and Rebecca were listed alone at Lancaster, Ohio.  If you have information on Clara's later life, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

As noted above, Clara's cousin Henry Weaver Sherrick inscribed a page on November 8, 1896.  Henry's father Noah Sherrick was the older brother of Clara's father John Sherrick.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1848-1852 Autograph Album of Eliza A. Carter of Marietta, Ohio; Adopted Daughter of Marietta College Teacher William Slocomb

1848-1852 autograph album that belonged to Eliza A. Carter of Marietta, Ohio.  She was the adopted daughter of William Slocomb, who was a teacher at Marietta College at Marietta, Ohio.

It was presumably Eliza who wrote her name on the title page.

"The Floral Album", which measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6-1/4", was printed by J. C. Riker of 129 Fulton Street in New York City.  The album contains six beautiful hand-painted engravings and the sentiments of 19 of Eliza's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Eliza A. Carter was born about 1832 in Delaware; I don't have the names of her parents.  By 1850 she was living in the household of William Slocomb and wife Seba Hand (Buell) Slocomb.  William at some point adopted Eliza, whether before his 1840 marriage to Seba or after.  William inscribed a page in Eliza's album at Marietta, Ohio, on May 20, 1848.

William Slocomb, possibly Samuel William Slocomb, a Massachusetts native, was a teacher in the early years of Marietta College at Marietta, Ohio.  According to information I found online from a Slocomb descendant, William attended theological seminary but was never ordained.

On May 11, 1852, Eliza A. Carter married Joseph Buell Ward, a nephew of Seba Hand (Buell) Slocomb.  Eliza and Joseph moved to Rochester, New York.  At some point, William and Seba joined them in their household.  Eliza, Joseph and daughter Mary Frances (Ward) Williams are buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Rochester, New York.  There's also a Find-a-Grave memorial for Seba Hand (Buell) Slocomb, but I didn't see one for her husband William Slocomb.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed after the sample pages below, please leave a comment for the benefit of fellow researchers.

Below:  Inscribed at Marietta, Ohio, on May 29, 1848 by I. M. Preston and Jane S. Woodruff.  Ira Mills Preston and Jane Sophia Woodruff would marry on the date of their inscription.  Ira graduated from Marietta College in 1845 and Lane Seminary in 1848 and then served as a missionary in West Africa from 1848-1867.  The Gaboon Mission West Africa is mentioned under the place and date.

I'm not sure of the initial for the given name of the inscriber shown below and ask for readers' interpretations.  If W. H. J., he might have been William H. Jett, who was about Eliza's age.

Below:  Mary P. Carpenter; inscribed at Athens, Ohio, on July 5, 1850

Inscribers in the Album
  • Unsigned; inscribed at Marietta, Ohio, on February 1, 1849; perhaps by Eliza herself or someone else.

Riker of 129 Fulton Street, New York.  Eliza was born January 12, 1832 and was adopted by Marietta College teacher William Slocomb, who inscribed a page in her album.  Eliza married Joseph Buell Ward, nephew of William's wife Seba Hand (Buell) Slocomb on May 11, 1852.  More information

1887-1889 Autograph Album of Amelia Lich, possibly Emilie Lich, of the Evansville, Indiana, area; at E.H.S. and possibly at Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute

Autograph Album of Amelia Lich of Indiana, a student at E. H. S. and possibly then at Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute, as inscribers mentioned both institutions.   Most inscriptions are directed to "Amelia"; a couple are directed to "Miss Lich".  Research shows that Amelia's name might have been Emilie Lich.

Many of the inscriptions were made by residents of Evansville, Indiana, so it's tempting to assume that E.H.S. was Evansville High School.   I didn't see Amelia's name in the Indiana State Normal School publication I checked.  She may not actually have been a student or she may have attended short of graduation.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 32 of Amelia friends and schoolmates from Evansville, Indiana, and Terre Haute, Indiana.  An alphabetical list of inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct and hopefully with the correct Amelia - corrections and additions requested:

Amelia may have been the Amelia Lich who was born about 1870 in Ohio, daughter of German immigrants Rev. Henry G. Lich and wife Sabina, and living in 1880 at New Albany, Indiana.   Sabina may have been Mary S. [Sabina?] (Hoff) Lich, as shown on daughter Anna Dorothea Lich's death record.

An 1887 City Directory of Terre Haute, Indiana, lists the family, except for Sabina, who had died in 1882, as living at 124 North 5th Street, which  might have been the parsonage of the German Methodist Episcopal Church.

Rev. Henry G. Lich, wife Sabina and several other family members are buried in the Fairview Cemetery at New Albany, Indiana.  Interestingly, one of the family members is Emilie Lich Schneider, who may have been our Amelia.  If so, Amelia  was born about 1870, according to the Census, and died on November 29, 1960, according to her stone.  Emilie's husband was George W. Schneider.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, an alternate theory as to Amelia's identity, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1879-1884 Autograph Album of Myra of Santa Cruz, California, and/or Soquel, California

1879-1884 autograph album that belonged to a Myra, presumably of Santa Cruz, California, and/or Soquel, California.  The earlier inscriptions, dated 1880, were inscribed at Santa Cruz by Myra's schoolmates.  The inscriptions from 1882-1884 were penned at Soquel, California.

Myra was given the album by her Uncle Will.

The album measures approximately 6" by 4-1/2"and is a softcover; it  may have had covers at one point.  The album contains the sentiments of 26 of Myra's schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

If you have an idea of who Myra was, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  I found a Myra Phillips from the correct time frame at Santa Cruz, California, the adopted daughter of W. H. and Myra Hobbs.  However, it's possible that Myra was a nickname for someone else.

A few pages from the album:

1886-1887 Autograph Album of George M. Bovie of Hoosick, New York; while Student at Coleman National Business College at Newark, New Jersey

Autograph album with inscriptions acquired in 1886 and 1887 at Coleman National Business College, founded by Henry Coleman at Newark, New Jersey.  Students came from all over the United States and from Canada, Colombia and Cuba.

I believe the owner, G. M. Bovie, was George M. Bovie of Hoosick, New York.  George's name appears on three pages.

The first autograph in the album is that of H. Coleman, who was presumably Henry Coleman, founder of Coleman National Business College.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 48 of George's fellow students and faculty at Coleman National Business College.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.
