1880s Autograph Album of Clara Bell Warden of Peacham, Vermont

1880s autograph album that belonged to a Clara of the Peacham, Vermont, area.  Clara didn't leave her name in the album, but from the clues provided by inscribers, she was found to have been Clara Bell Warden of Peacham, Vermont.

The album measures approximately 6-1/4" by 3-3/4" and contains the sentiments of about 60 of Clara's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teacher.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Clara Bell Warden was born October 11, 1865 at Barnet, Vermont, the daughter of James Warden and Candace [or Candice] Lucy (Jones) Warden.  Clara's mother inscribed two pages in the album, one of them facing a page inscribed by Clara's father, who gave his age in 1882 as 66.

I believe Clara had six siblings, three of whom died before she started collecting autographs in this album.  Two of Clara's sisters inscribed pages in her album.  Sarah Ruby (Warden) Bingham of Peacham, Vermont, inscribed a page on September 11, 1881.  Sarah was the wife of inscriber James Warner Bingham.

Ella M. (Warden) Gilfillan inscribed a page at Burke, Vermont, on August 10, 1883.  Ella was the wife of Horace Gilfillan.

On October 31, 1893, Clara Bell Warden married George Seth Garvin, son of George William Garvin and Margery D. (Clark) Garvin.  Before his marriage to Clara, George inscribed a page in her album in 1888.

Clara and George lived in Vermont and Maine and had two children, daughters Candace and Elsie.  Clara died in Maine in 1930 and George in 1939.  They're buried in the Danville Green Cemetery at Danville, Vermont.

1860s+ Autograph Album of Harriet Naomi (Burbank) Hunt of Massachusetts and New Hampshire

Album that was presented to Hattie in 1860, presumably Harriet Naomi (Burbank) Hunt from before and after her marriage to David Franklin Hunt.  Most of the inscriptions are from the 1860s, the rest by daughter Florence C. Hunt in a later era.

Sadly, the presentation page is half torn away and is missing the names of the person who presented the album to Hattie at Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, on June 21, 1860 and Hattie's name, which might have included her full name.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 20 of Hattie's relatives and friends, as well as five hand-colored botanical prints.  The title page is missing, but the album may have been produced by J. C. Riker or another quality printer of the era.

Assuming I have the correct Hattie, Harriet Naomi Burbank was born January 27, 1845 at Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of blacksmith David Burbank and Elizabeth (?) Burbank.  Hattie's Massachusetts birth record does not provide the maiden name of her mother, unless her mother was also a Burbank.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in.

According to the History of the Town of Antrim, New Hampshire: From Its Earliest Settlement to June 27, 1877, with a Brief Genealogical Record of All the Antrim Families, by Warren Robert Cochrane and published by 1880 by Warren Steam Printing Press, Hattie married David Franklin Hunt, a native of Hancock, New Hampshire, in 1864.

In 1868 they moved to Antrim, New Hampshire for a few years, left for a couple years and returned to Antrim in 1873.  The 1910 Census shows David and Harriet at Sodus, New York, where David was manufacturing an apple processing machine.  They were back at Antrim where David died in 1912.  Hattie died in 1918.  They're buried in the Maplewood Cemetery at Antrim, New Hampshire, along with daughter Florence Caroline (Hunt) Madden and husband Thomas Madden.

They had at least two children, daughters Antoinette A. Hunt and Florence Caroline Hunt.  As mentioned above, Florence inscribed three pages in the album, including one page with a sketch of a house, perhaps after the house where she grew up.

It may have been in the possession of other people at times, as at least three more names appear, although not as prominently as Samuel's name.  See farther below.

The Testament is a small one, measuring approximately 4-1/2" by 2-3/4".  The front cover has detached, and there's a bit of staining throughout.  It was published in 1846 in New York, New York, by A. S. Barnes & Company of 51 John Street.

Samuel's name appears on several pages.  Brookfield, New Hampshire is more legible in the second of the two images below.

Three other names also appear, as shown below.

Samuel Lyford Hutchins was born October 21, 1852 at Wakefield, New Hampshire, the son of John Sanborn Hutchins and Betsey (Lyford) Hutchins.  By 1860, the family had moved to Brookfield, New Hampshire, where they were recorded in the US Census of that year.

Samuel, a businessman and excelsior manufacturer, married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Drew, who died in 1877, perhaps after lingering effects of the birth of their daughter Sadie Bell Hutchins, who herself died in 1888.  On October 25, 1880 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Samuel married Mary Adaline Corson, a Wakefield, New Hampshire, native.  They had two children, one of whom died in infancy.

Samuel died in 1902 and Mary Adaline in 1939.  According to their Find-a-Grave memorials, which contain information and some photographs, Samuel, his two wives and three of his children are buried in the Union Cemetery at Union, New Hampshire.

1884 Calling Card of the Misses Clara Messer & Myrtie Messer, possibly of New London, New Hampshire

Calling card of "Miss Clara and Myrtie Messer, Compliments for Friday Evening, March 7, 1884.  They may have been Clara Messer and her sister Myrtie Messer, the daughters of William Alonzo Messer and Mary Hannah (Nichols) Messer of New London, New Hampshire.

The calling card was found tucked in an 1877-1891 autograph album with inscriptions mostly from people in the Brownfield, Maine, and Bridgton, Maine, area, with a few from Massachusetts and one from New York.

According to her Find a Grave memorial, Clara Belle Messer was born June 10, 1866 at New London, New Hampshire, and would marry George Thurston.  Clara is buried in the Elkins Cemetery at Elkins, New Hampshire.

According to her Find a Gravel memorial, Myrtie Kate Messer was born October 22, 1869 at New London, Connecticut, and would marry Harry Leroy Cochran. I believe they had at least two children. Myrtie is buried in the Blossom Hill Cemetery at Concord, New Hampshire.

Calling Card of Leon McG. Wallace, presumably Leon McGregor Wallace (1866-1919) of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont

Calling card of Leon McG. Wallace, presumably Leon McGregor Wallace, a New Hampshire native, who later worked as a clerk and manager at Boston, Massachusetts, and as an auditor in Vermont.

The calling card was found tucked in an 1877-1891 autograph album with inscriptions mostly from people in the Brownfield, Maine, and Bridgton, Maine, area, with a few from Massachusetts and one from New York.

According to marriage, death and burial records, Leon was born June 10, 1866 at Grantham, New Hampshire, the son of William W. Wallace and Diane M. (Marsh) Wallace.  Leon's Massachusetts marriage record shows that he was living at Boston, Massachusetts, and working as a clerk, when he married Elizabeth Simmons Blasland of Washington, D.C., on  November 29, 1895 at Boston.  Elizabeth, who was born about 1870 at Washington, D.C., was the daughter of Massachusetts natives William and Ruth Blasland.

Leon was living at Windsor, Vermont, when he died May 3, 1919; on his Vermont death record, his occupation was given as auditor, and he was listed as single.   He's buried in the Hill Dale Cemetery at East Grantham, New Hampshire.  What happened to his marriage, I don't know, but they may have been apart for some years, as the 1910 Census shows that Leon and Elizabeth were both living in Boston, but not in the same household.

Bible of Josiah Henry Greene & Wives Susan Converse and Laura Hanks; of New Hampshire & Vermont

Bible that belonged to Josiah Henry Greene and wives Susan (Converse) Greene and Laura (Hanks) Greene of Vermont.

The Bible, published by the American Bible Society of New York, New York, in 1851 measures approximately 10-1/2" by 7" by 2-3/4" inches.    Images of the Family Record pages appear at the end of this post.

The Bible contains four Family Record pages, three of which have entries - dates only, no place names - for five people:

• Joseph Henry Greene, his birth, marriage and death dates
• Susan (Converse) Greene, her birth, marriage and death dates
• Laura (Hanks) Greene, her birth and marriage dates
• Julius C. Greene, his birth date
• Melissa S. Greene, her birth date

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Josiah Henry Greene was born at Hanover, New Hampshire, on February 1, 1800, the son of Josiah and Susan (Greene) Greene.  Josiah moved to Randolph, Vermont, about 1811.  He married Susan Converse on November 11, 1834.  The marriage date is in the Bible but not the place, but it was presumably Randolph, Vermont.  

Susan's birth year of 1793 is recorded in the Bible.  Another entry shows that she died August 1851; her Find-a-Grave listing gives the full date as August 26, 1851.   She's buried in the Randolph Center Cemetery at Randolph, Vermont.   There are no children for Susan listed in the Bible.

I believe Susan's parents were Joseph Converse and Mary (Johnson) Converse, who, along with several of their children, are also buried in the Randolph Center Cemetery.

On June 12, 1853, Josiah Henry Greene married Laura Hanks, whose birth date in the Bible is shown as October 27, 1815.  A Vermont birth record shows that Laura was born at Randolph Township, Vermont, to Theophilus Sargent Hanks and wife Patty (Stevens) Hanks.  

The Bible shows birth dates for two children born to Josiah and Laura: 

1. Julius C. Greene; I noted that one place online had Julius' middle name as Converse; if so, this was presumably a tribute to Josiah's first wife, Susan (Converse) Greene.
2. Melissa S. Greene; she was presumably Melissa Susan Greene or Susan Melissa Greene, perhaps also named in honor of Susan (Converse) Greene

The only two death dates in the Bible are for Susan (Converse) Greene and Josiah Henry Greene, who died November 12, 1875.

Josiah and Laura, who died in 1885, and their two children, are buried in the East Randolph Cemetery at East Randolph, Vermont.

1889-1916 Autograph Album of Grace Etta Charles of Kearsarge, New Hampshire and, later, Bridgton, Maine as Wife of Wilmot A. Hibbard

Autograph album given at Christmas 1889 to Grace Etta Charles of Kearsarge, New Hampshire, by her maternal aunt Selma B.  (Abbott) Bean.  Grace kept up her album until 1916, when, by that time, she had married to Wilmot A. Hibbard and was living at Bridgton, Maine.

Grace herself inscribed a page on January 5, 1890.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 43 of Grace's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Grace Etta Charles was born about May 23, 1875 at North Conway, New Hampshire, the daughter of Jason Charles and Vietta A. (Abbott) Charles.   Grace's sisters Lizzie B. Charles and Sadie A. Charles inscribed pages in her album.

On November 21, 1896 at West Bridgton, Maine, Grace married Wilmot A. Hibbard, son of Orrin Bent Hibbard and Elizabeth Ann (Goldthwaite) Hibbard.  Wilmot was born May 19, 1874.

An R. I. Hibbard of West Bridgton, Maine, inscribed a page in the album on January 8, 1895.  Wilmot had a sister Rebecca I. Hibbard - could Grace's friendship with Rebecca been the reason Grace would meet and marry Wilmot?

Grace and Wilmot made their home at Bridgton, Maine, and had at least two children.  Grace died in 1930 and Wilmot in 1952.  They're buried in the Valley Cemetery at Bridgton, Maine.
