Three 1880s Cabinet Photos by New Orleans Studios: Surnames Cause or Causse, Fredrich

1882 cabinet photograph of Lotta Fredrich

Out of a large collection of photographs are three from the same era in New Orleans.  They may or may not have a relationship; if so, hopefully a reader can tease it out.

The photographs: (others shown farther below)
  • 1882 photograph of a young woman, shown above, identified on the reverse as Lotta Fredrich of New Orleans, Louisiana.  Photograph by the Simon studio of 21 Hospital Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.  She may have been Charlotte M. Frederick.
  • 1884 photograph of a man identified as Mr. Robert Cause of New Orleans, La.  Photo by Adams & Simon studio of 111 Royal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Cabinet photograph of two young girls identified on reverse as Aggie and Sarah.  Photograph by the C. H. Adams studio of 145 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana
Interestingly, there was a Robert Causse (1830-1916) living in New Orleans with wife Agnes D. (Hogarth) Causse and a daughter Agnes, who would be about the age of Aggie and Sarah.  Robert Causse was a native of South Carolina.

If you recognize the names or partial names and can provide a further identity, and especially if you can draw a connection between the photographs, please leave a comment.

1886-1893 Autograph Album of Anna Higman, "Annie", of Bastrop, Louisiana; Student at Morehouse College at Bastrop

1888-1893 large autograph album that belonged to Anna Higman, "Annie", of Bastrop, Louisiana.  During at least part of this time, Annie was a student at Morehouse College at Bastrop, Louisiana, which is located in Morehouse Parish.  One inscriber called it Bastrop College.

Annie inscribed her name on the first page of handwriting in the album and followed it up with a dedication page.

The album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 6-3/4" and contains 94 sentiments from Annie's relatives, friends, schoolmates and at least one former teacher.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Anna Higman was born about 1869 in Louisiana, the daughter of William Abraham Higman and Sarah L. (Pratt) Higman, "Sallie".  Annie's father had died by the time she started acquiring inscriptions in this album, but her mother inscribed a page at Bastrop, Louisiana, on February 11, but she did not write a year.

Other relatives in the album who expressed a kinship [and there were likely more who did not express a kinship]
  • H. M. Helen, "your sister"; inscribed a group page.  Presumably Annie's sister Helen Higman.
  • Mervin B. Higman of Bastrop, Louisiana; inscribed a group page.  Annie's brother.
  • Cousin M. C. L.; inscribed at Bastrop, Louisiana, on February 18, 1888.
  • A. O. P., or R. O. P.; inscribed at B. B. on July 30, 1887.  "Your Auntie".  Could the P stand for Pratt, the surname of Annie's mother?
  • Anna; Annie's aunt; inscribed on December 11, 1887.  Full page sentiment
  • Jane; inscribed on August 22, 1893 at Ruston, Louisiana.  Annie's Aunt Jane
  • J. B. Higman; inscribed at Bastrop, Louisiana, on March 19, 1888.  Annie's Uncle John Brisco Higman, who was a brother to Annie's father, William Abraham Higman.
  • Myrtle Higman; inscribed on March 19, 1888 at Bastrop, Louisiana.  Annie's cousin Myrtle Higman was the daughter of Emma Charity (Patton) Higman and John Brisco Higman, who was a brother to Annie's father William Abraham Higman.  Myrtle was about 7 when she inscribed this page.

Sometime before 1890, Annie married Forest Thompson, son of George Washington Thompson and Harriet E. (O'Neal) Thompson.  I believe they were the G. W. Thompson and H. E. Thompson who inscribed pages in the album.

G. W. Thompson of Downsville, Louisiana; inscribed on January 10, 1892

H. E. Thompson [name partially obscured] of Downsville, Louisiana; inscribed on January 13, 1892.

The album also contains a page inscribed by B. F. Thompson of Ruston, Louisiana, on July 24, 1893.  Could Forest have been a middle name?  Or was this an uncle?

Forest and Annie named one of their children Benjamin Franklin Thompson, born in 1891.  They had two other children, before Annie died sometime in, I believe, in the middle to late 1890s.  Forest married Elma Henry in 1899 and had more children.

I haven't found a death record or grave listing for Annie.  Hopefully a reader has more information.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1862-1868 Autograph Album of Samuel Isaac Stein of Platteville, Wisconsin

1863-1868 autograph album that belonged to Samuel Isaac Stein of Platteville, Wisconsin.

The album measures approximately 8" x 5-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 77 of Samuel's friends in Wisconsin, Louisiana and Illinois, with perhaps some of them his fellow soldiers in the Wisconsin 41st Infantry.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they left, appear at the end of this post.  Two inscribers affixed their photograph to the page they signed.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Samuel Isaac Stein was born March 24, 1839 in Treysa, Hesse-Cassel, Germany, according to his 1874 passport application.  I don't have his parents' names.  He arrived in the United States around 1860, not long before he started acquiring autographs in this album.   He enlisted as a second sergeant with Company A of the 41st Wisconsin on May 5, 1864 and mustered out a sergeant on September 23, 1864.

Samuel was working as a dry goods merchant at Platteville, Wisconsin at the time of enumeration of the 1870 Census.  At some point after that, he married Wilhelmina Sheir, "Minnie".  They had, I believe, two children, one of whom, Willie, died in childhood.  Their daughter Katherine B. Stein outlived her parents; I don't believe she married.

By 1892, according to pension records, Samuel had become an invalid.  He died in 1913; Minnie died in 1928.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

A few representative pages:

The page below was inscribed by Charles Potter, Hattie Potter and Henry Potter of Platteville, Wisconsin; Charles dated his inscription May 24, 1863.

E. T. Mears and A. A. Mears of Platteville, Wisconsin, inscribed a page on April 12, 1866.  They were Elias Tyler Mears and wife Agatha Ablett (Cattermole) Mears.

On the page that O. F. Griswold of White Hall, Illinois, inscribed, he referred to himself as Samuel's "fellow traveler".  He was presumably Orlando F. Griswold.

The page below was inscribed by Solomon Greenspecht at New Orleans, on October 21, 1866; by H. B. Lichtenstein; and by Charles S. Myers.

The next page in the album was inscribed by Benjamin Lichtenstein at New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 26, 1866.  He date-stamped the page with the stamp of the family company Lichtenstein Brothers and Company at 79 Gravier Street, which I believe was a cigar and cigarette manufacturer.

The Hodges family of Platteville, Wisconsin, inscribed a page: Isaac and Lucetta (Crist) Hodges and their daughter Emma O. Hodges.

1846-1847 Autograph Album of Harriet Bliss Jordan of Thomaston, Maine; student at North Yarmouth Academy

1846-1847 autograph album of Hattie Bliss Jordan of Thomaston, Maine, with some autographs acquired while she was a student at North Yarmouth Academy.

Her pastor, R Woodhull, who inscribed a page at Thomaston, Maine, on July 11, 1847, was considerate enough of a researcher some 167 years in the future to work Hattie's full name into an acrostic.  He was Richard Woodhull, born in Connecticut in 1802, son of Captain Abraham Cooper Woodhull and Eunice (Sturges) Woodhull.  He married Sarah Forbes of Bangor, Maine.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" x 6-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 23 of Hattie's pastor, teacher, friends, schoolmates and possibly relatives.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  Sadly, many people signed with first names only or initials.

The album is a beauty, printed by J. C. Riker and containing six hand colored engravings of flowers, with black and white background scenes.  The title page, below, one of the more muted designs.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Harriet Bliss Jordan, "Hattie", was born April 27, 1831 at Thomaston, Maine, the daughter of Capt. Oliver William Jordan and Susan C. (Oakes) Jordan, both Thomaston, Maine, natives as well.  Capt. Jordan was a shipmaster and, after he gave up the seafaring life, a banker.

Harriet had, I believe, eight siblings, but I don't know if any of them signed pages in her album.  A family researcher might have better luck looking at the list of the signers at the end of this post for likely prospects among those who didn't give their surname or who used a married name.

Apparently Hattie attended North Yarmouth Academy, at least during the year 1846.  Several people indicated that they signed pages at the Academy or at North Yarmouth, Maine.  One of them might have been an instructor or administrator there, Samuel Woodbury Mitchell, who later became a college professor down South.  He inscribed a page at North Yarmouth, Maine, on November 6, 1846.

I wonder if Harriet Bliss Jordan was the Harriet who was living at Saco, Maine, at the time of the 1850 Census and apparently working at a mill.  It doesn't seem likely that the daughter of a sea captain and banker would be working at a Saco, Maine, mill, but I suppose it's possible.

On 30 May 1853 at Thomaston, Maine, Hattie married Captain Raymond Leeman Gillchrist, son of Capt. Joseph and Sarah (Carney) Gillchrist.  Hattie's happy days were not to last long, for she died at New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 11, 1854, from natural causes, from the climate or from childbirth, I would like to know.

1854-1886 Autograph Album of Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt of Brandon, Vermont, and Essex, New York

Note: See another post that features the 1884-1896 autograph album of Mary Burt, daughter of Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt and John Burt.

1854-1886 autograph album of Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt of Brandon, Vermont, and Essex, New York, from before and after her marriage to John Burt.

Someone wrote Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt's name on the first end paper and noted that she was the grandmother of Charles H. Brown, who was the son of Mary Burt, mentioned above, and her husband Clyde R. Brown.

The album measures approximately 8" x 6-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 113 of Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt's relatives, in-laws and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers appear at the end of this post.

The album was printed by Moss and Brother of Philadelphia and includes engravings scattered throughout, including the frontispiece and title page.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions most welcome!]

Nancy Lenora (Farr) Burt, "Nora" or "Nancy", was born 22 December 1835 at Brandon, Vermont, the daughter of Thomas Gibbs Farr and Martha (Fales) Farr.  Neither of her parents inscribed pages in her album, but I believe it was her mother, Martha (Fales) Farr, who inscribed a page as "Grand Mother" in Mary Burt's album, mentioned above.

Many of Nancy Lenora's other relatives signed pages in the album. Some of her relatives moved to the Midwest, including her uncle Volney A. Farr, whose family apparently invited her to their home at Springfield, Ohio, in 1856, where she acquired many autographs from people in that area.

Sometime in the late 1850s, Nancy Lenora Farr married John Burt, Jr., son of John Burt, Sr., and Susannah (Sherman) Burt of Essex, New York.  John Burt signed a page in the album on January 10, 1886 and noted that he was "aged 52".  He shared the page with W. Richardson, or W. W. Richardson.

I believe John and Nancy Lenora had three children:
  1. Martha, born about October 1860; married Lyman R. Thompson
  2. Fanny, born about October 1865; married William O. Fisher
  3. Mary, born March 4, 1871 at Essex, New York; married Clyde R. Brown
Fanny Burt contributed to a group page of signers mostly from Vermont in the 1880s.  Mary Burt contributed at least once, if not several times.

One of the engravings in the album has the name "Sarah Lincoln" in blue ink written beneath it.  I believe this was written by Nancy Lenora or someone else, not something printed when the album was created.  Perhaps friend Sarah Lincoln resembled the woman in the engraving?
