1870s Autograph Album of Annie E. Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin

1870s autograph album of Annie Eliza Carlyle of DeSoto, Wisconsin.

The album is approximately 4" x 3" and contains nearly 70 pages signed by relatives and friends.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Ann Eliza Carlyle was born about July 1859, daughter of Adam and Catherine Eliza (Cook) Carlyle, who were born at Forbeck Hill in Middlebie Parish, Scotland, and North Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada respectively.

Much of the information I found about the family is contained in the Biographical History of LaCrosse, Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties, Wisconsin, published in 1892.

Adam Carlyle, born 15 February 1825, came to Cornwall, Ontario, with his family in 1839, when he was about age fourteen.  He later moved to Williamsburg, Ontario, where he met and married Catherine Eliza Cook, daughter of John M. and Catherine (Hess) Cook.  She was born 18 April 1828 at North Williamsburg, Ontario.

About 1856, Adam and Catherine and their two children moved to DeSoto, Wisconsin.  They would go on to have, I think, six more children at DeSoto, one of whom was Annie, owner of the autograph album.

The page below was signed by Annie's father, though I can't make out the word he used for his first name.

Other Carlyle family members also signed pages in Annie's album.

Her oldest brother, Walter John Carlyle, who became a prominent Wisconsin figure, signed a page in 1879, assuming he is the W. J. Carlyle below.

Annie's sister Catherine Jane "Jennie" Carlyle signed a page in 1877.  Jennie was by then married to George Spangler.

Another of Annie's sisters signed a page in 1877.  She referred to Annie as Temperance and herself as Charity.

One of the last entries in the album appears to be a poem about Annie's impending move to Nebraska and possible marriage.  It was signed by, I think, by "7 Bub".  From what I could tell, Annie never married, or if she did, she took her maiden name back.

I didn't find a record of Annie in Nebraska, but I believe she is the Annie who was living at Huron, South Dakota, at the time of the 1910 Census.

She lived past the time that the 1940 Census of Plymouth, Wisconsin was enumerated.  She was then living with Vera and Clara Carlyle and was designated as an aunt in the household.

Gem Tintypes of Clarence and Tillie Ellenwood of Maine

Attached gem-sized tintypes of a son and mother identified as Clarence and Tillie Ellenwood.

I found two such pairs in Maine, Clarence and his mother Tillie Ellenwood/Ellinwood/Ellingwood of Eastport, Maine, and Clarence and Tillie of Winterport and Frankfort, Maine.

The seller of the tintypes indicated they were the former son/mother pair.

From online research, hopefully correct:

Clarence Ellenwood was born 8 March 1854 at Eastport, Maine, son of Marshall Alden Ellenwood and Matilda Jane (Pendleton) Ellenwood.

I found sources that indicated Marshall Alden Ellenwood was born 15 October 1831 at Eastport, Maine, but he indicated Canada on the Censuses.  It wasn't uncommon for people living on the Canadian islands of Passamaquoddy Bay to have their children born at Eastport, Maine, where there was a doctor.

This may have been the case with Marshall Alden Ellenwood.  His parents were Nelson and Mary Ann (Guptill) Ellenwood.

Matilda Jane "Tillie" (Pendleton) Ellenwood was born 17 June 1829 at Deer Island, New Brunswick, across from Eastport, Maine, the daughter of Isaac Gilkey Pendleton and Mary (Jamison) Pendleton.

Marshall Alden Ellenwood and Matilda Jane Pendleton married at Eastport, Maine, on 22 June 1852.  Clarence was their first born.  The second was Charles Victor Ellenwood or Ellinwood.

At some point the family moved from the Passamaquoddy Bay area to New York and the Midwest.  Clarence married Marietta "Mattie" Fowler, daughter of Oscar and Charlotte (Card) Fowler and had a daughter Ethel, born about February 1881 at Eaton, New York.

Marshall Alden Ellenwood died at Whitewater, Wisconsin, on 9 September 1898.  Several years later, Clarence died at Whitewater on 1 November 1905.   He had apparently been divorced from Marietta and moved to Whitewater.

In the 1900 Census of Eaton, New York, Marietta was shown as remarried to Miles Nash.  Ethel was living with her mother and stepfather.

Matilda Jane "Tillie" (Pendleton) Ellenwood died 4 July 1913 at Chatworth, Illinois, probably having moved there to be with her son Dr. Charles Victor Ellinwood.

In case someone who has these same or similar photographs recognizes the mother/son pair not as the Passamaquoddy area Ellenwoods, but rather the Waldo County Ellingwoods, here is what I found on them.

Clarence Ellingwood was born about 1869 in Maine, son of Manley and Matilda (Carlton) Ellingwood, who were born in the Frankfort and Winterport, Maine area.  I lost track of Clarence after the 1880 Census.

Snapshot of Simon Scribner, Mellen, Wisconsin (born in Maine in 1858)

Faint snapshot of Simon Scribner of Mellen, Wisconsin.  I used the Auto Contrast to give a better idea of his facial features.

From online research, it appears that Simon was born in 1858 in Washington County or Penobscot County, Maine, and lived in towns where those two counties abut until sometime after the 1880 Census when he moved to Wisconsin.  In fact, the trip must have occurred, at least for his wife and children, after May 1893, when son Raymond was born, as his birth state is given as Maine on the 1900 Census.

Simon was the son of Nelson Webber Scribner and Caroline (Blanchard) Scribner.  He married Ada M. Kneeland in 1875 in Carroll, Penosbscot County, Maine.  She was born in Topsfield, Washington County, Maine, in 1859, the daughter of Obed and Eliza (Hannonell) Kneeland.

They had a large family, with most of the children born in Maine.  [That must have been an interesting trip west!]  Ada died in 1933; Simon died in 1946.
