CDV of Baby Identified as Minnie Gridley; by a Waterville, New York studio

Carte de Visite of a baby identified on the reverse as Minnie Gridley.  The photograph was taken at the R. W. Williams studio at Waterville, New York.

I found several candidates for a Minnie Gridley near Waterville, New York, born in the 1860s to 1880s time frame.

A plausible candidate was the Minnie Gridley born at Waterville, New York, in 1877, and living at nearby Marshall, New York, at the time of the 1880 Census.  She was daughter of Joseph H. Gridley and Josephine H. (McAdam) Gridley.

Intriguingly, the Gridleys had a daughter Marian, and it's possible that Marian was Minnie.  If so, Marian/Minnie was born November 12, 1877 and would marry John Allen Losee.  They had two sons.  children.  Marian died in 1961 and John in 1966.

Photographs of the Brownell Family of Potsdam, New York, & Scott Family of Sabattus, Maine

Fourteen, and possibly more, photographs of the Brownell and related families of the Potsdam, New York, area and the Scott and related families of Webster, Maine, now part of Sabattus, Maine.

The photographs are connected by the fact that Beulah Winifred Brownell of Potsdam, New York, married Lloyd Bailey Scott of Webster, Maine, now Sabattus, after the death of her first husband James Henry Spear.

If you have corrections and/or additions regarding the information presented here, please leave a comment.  Please be careful not to provide information about living people, without their permission.

Shown in the photograph above are parents William Ezra Brownell and Blanche Winifred (Haven) Brownell and three of their children, left to right:  Mildred Brownell; Fayette Haven Brownell and Beulah Winifred Brownell.

Beulah's husband Lloyd Bailey Scott of Webster, Maine, is shown below, as a child with his brother George Kenneth Scott and as a young man, in photographs taken by the G. B. Weller studio of Brunswick, Maine, and the Ray studio of Lewiston, Maine.

One of the photographs shows Devil's Den, an interesting geological formation on Sabattus Mountain, near the border of Sabattus, Maine, and Wales, Maine.  An interesting description of Devil's Den is contained in an article by Edith Labbie in the November 8, 1975 edition of the Lewiston [Maine] Evening Journal.  A reader has sent a link to an article in an April 2012 newsletter for employees of Lewiston [Maine] Public Works that shows several photographs of the cave, including this one; the men are identified as J. Boucher and Preston Smith.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested!]

According to the memorial page, Frederick D. Stuart was born at Brooklyn, New York, on July 12, 1814.  He is presumably the same Frederick D. Stuart who joined the U.S. Navy and was a member of the United States Exploring Expedition, under Charles Wilkes, as well as serving during Wilkes during the Civil War.  Stuart Island, off the coast of Washington, was named for Frederick D. Stuart.  About 1835, Frederick married Catherine Van Voorhis; they had several children, including Frederick D. Stuart, Jr., who also served in the U. S. Navy.  See a brief write-up on father and son here, in a walking-tour handout for the Congressional Cemetery Bicentennial Heritage Festival (1807-2007) at Washington, D. C.., they, and other family members, are buried.

Frederick D. Stuart, Sr., died at Washington, D. C. on January 25, 1878.  According to a Find-a-Grave listing, he had caught a chill at the funeral of his wife two weeks earlier.

c1924 Photograph Album with Scenes of Ossining, New York; Port Chester, New York; Bristol, Rhode Island; Truro

c1924 era photograph album, approximately 8" by 5-3/4", with 30 snapshots of people, automobiles, seashore and family groups.

See the entire album at the end of this post.

Sadly, no people are identified, but the owners most likely lived or had relatives at Ossining, New York, and Port Chester, New York.  They may also have had family at South Truro, Massachusetts, and Bristol, Rhode Island, or may have been vacationing there when the photographs were taken.

Places mentioned, in page order:
  1. South Truro, presumably Massachusetts - a beach scene
  2. Bristol, Rhode Island - a group of people in front of an automobile
  3. Ossining, New York, May 18, 1924; three distinguished-appearing men
  4. Ossining, New York, 1924 - 4 couples of middle and older age.
  5. Port Chester, New York, June 14, 1924 - group of people
  6. Ossining, New York - group of people, possibly family members
  7. Port Chester, New York - June 14, 1924 - same three men as noted in #3 in different garb
  8. Ossining, New York, May 18, 1924 - older couple
  9. Port Chester, New York, 1924 - automobile with people inside
  10. Port Chester, New York, 1924 - family group that appears to be a child, her parents and one set of grandparents
  11. Port Chester, New York, June 15, 1924 - parents and two children, shown below.  Because the parents appear in many of the photographs, it's possible that this album belonged to them.

If you recognize any of these people from your family research, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1860-1880 Autograph Album of Alice M. Seeley, "Allie", of Brockport and Clarkson, New York

1860-1880 autograph album that belonged to Alice M. Seeley, "Allie", of Brockport and Clarkson, New York.

All but one of the inscriptions were made in the 1860s, with one made at Brockport, New York in 1880, when the album apparently came to light again.  In case that inscriber, whose name I can't decipher, was especially significant, you can see an image of the page near the end of this post.

Many inscriptions, individual and on group pages, were contributed by schoolmates at
  • Buffalo Female Academy at Buffalo, New York
  • Curtis Seminary for Girls at Rochester, New York, which later became known as Livingston Park Seminary
  • Livingston Park Seminary at Rochester, New York; called Livingston Place Seminary by a few inscribers
The album was given to Allie by her mother, who may have been Maria S. (Upson) Seeley Clark, on December 18, 1860.

The album is a large one, measuring approximately 9-3/4" by 8-1/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly sixty of Allie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Entitled "Pensez a Moi", the album was published by Leavitt & Allen of New York City.  It contains six engravings, one of which, a smaller one, is featured on the title page, below.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested!]

Alice M. Seeley, "Allie", was born about December 19, 1848, or December 19, 1849 at, I think, Brockport, New York.  Hopefully a reader can provide her birth record and confirmation of her parents, who I think were Maria S. (Upson) Seeley, or Mariah S. (Upson) Seeley and William B. Seeley, who died in 1849.   A found a few references that gave the surname as Seelye.

Allie herself contributed to one of the several group pages.  Contributing their names to a page entitled "Graduating Class of 1868", possibly referencing Buffalo Female Academy, were:
  • Sarah T. Weller of Buffalo, New York, inscribed on May 16, 1868
  • Allie M. Seeley, inscribed on June 25, 1868; album owner
  • Clara T. Healy of Gowanda, New York, who also inscribed an individual page
  • Allie E. Mersereau of Portville, New York; she was Emily Almira Mersereau
  • Annabell Cook, inscribed in March 1868; she may have been the Annabell who inscribed an individual page
  • Mary F. Smith of La Salle, New York
  • Annie Palmer of Buffalo, New York

The 1860 Federal Census of Clarkson, New York, shows Maria(h) and Allie living in the household of Maria's subsequent husband Dr. Horace Clark, and his two daughters with first wife Sophronia (Randall) Clark.

According to an online source, Allie married twice, but I can't substantiate either marriage, though I did find a couple whom I believe to be Allie and her second husband William Pitt Colvin on the 1900 Census of Elmira, New York.  According to that source, Allie's husbands:
  1. Willard Kimball Goodrich (about 1846-1879), married about 1872
  2. William Pitt Colvin (1848-1923), married about 1883
One page in the album was inscribed at Brockport, New York, on November 23, 1880 by someone whose name I can't make out, but this date would have been after Allie's first husband died and before she remarried.

I believe that Alice M. Seeley, "Allie", died in 1911 at Elmira, New York.  If you have corrections, clarifications and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1890s Autograph Album of Helen Brooks of Schodack, New York

1890s autograph album of Helen Brooks of Schodack, New York.  She may have been Ellen C. Brooks.  Several of her siblings and other relatives inscribed pages in the album.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 44 of Helen's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

On a bittersweet page a note was added, presumably by Helen herself, to indicate that the inscriber, Fannie Barringer of South Schodack, had died.  Fannie inscribed her page on September 15, 1891.  The note indicates that she died on May 21, 1893.

From brief online research, hopefully correct, and hopefully with the correct person as the album owner [corrections and additions requested]

Helen Brooks was born June 24, 1879 at Schodack, New York, the daughter of Jacob H. Brooks and Laura M. (Collins) Brooks.

Helen's father, Jacob H. Brooks, the son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Hogeboom) Brooks, may have had a first marriage to Rosa Craigin, daughter of Andrew F. and Margaret (Cleary) Craigin; they possibly had two children together.  Rosa died April 30, 1871.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in with definitive information.

On November 2, 1872, Jacob married Laura M. Collins, daughter of Joseph and Mary B. (Worth) Collins.  I believe Jacob and Laura had seven children together, but, again, I'd be interested in hearing from a reader.  Several people from the Collins family inscribed pages in Helen's album.

Helen's sister Suke of East Schodack, New York, inscribed a page on June 24, 1893.

Helen's brother Charles J. Brooks inscribed a page on May 15, 1892.

Helen's brother Junius Fallon Brooks inscribed a page.

Helen's brother Burton Brooks of South Schodack, New York, inscribed a page.

Helen's sister Abbie Amelia Brooks inscribed a page on February 19, 1892.

Helen's sister Mary E. Brooks, "Mamie", inscribed a page in July 1891.

Many other inscribers indicated a family relationship with Helen, as you can see from the list of inscribers below.  Among them were Helen's great aunt Abbie M. White of Muitzesville, New York, and great uncle George B. Worth.

Before 1910, Helen married Fred Higgins, son of David and Sophia Higgins.  Fred was born about October 1881 in New York.  I believe Helen and Fred had at least three children.  Fred died in 1958, but I haven't found a death record for Helen.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Family Bible of Emma Augusta (Horton) Rumsey of Yates, Ontario and Monroe Counties, New York; Wife of Samuel Randal Rumsey

Bible that apparently originally belonged to Mrs. Minerva Horton of Yates County, New York, who then passed it on to her daughter, Emma Augusta (Horton) Rumsey, wife of Samuel Randall Rumsey.

Minerva, born about 1821 in New York.  I believe her husband was Isaac Horton, born about 1808 in either Vermont or New York.  Someone, perhaps Minerva herself, wrote the names of her children on the page below; Emma was her second youngest child.

The Bible, which measures about 8" by 5", has handwritten genealogy, in the handwriting of more than one person, concerning the Horton and Rumsey families, with the included surnames of Parlett, Albro and Felps [Phelps ?], and a few items tucked in.

Some of the information contained in the Bible is at odds with what I found online, perhaps because entries, at least some of them, were entered at long remove by someone who may not have been in attendance at the actual event.

The facing pages below were inscribed by one of Emma's children.

"Samuel Randal Rumsey and Emma Augusta Horton was married January 12, 1873 by Rev. Braddish at Newark, New York.  Pa Born at Hornellsville, Mar 15 /1849.  Died at Rochester, Jan 19 /1918.  Ma Born at Naples, Mar 12 /1859.  [Died at] Rochester Nov 13 /1920.  Of this union 9 children were born."
  • Charles - Charles Burton Rumsey - born December 6, 1876 at Geneva, New York; died January 14, 1910 at Pittsburg
  • Emma - Emma Estella Rumsey - born at Penn Yan, New York, on February 3, 1880
  • Phoebe - Phoebe Ann Rumsey - born at Penn Yan, New York, on April 22, 1882
  • Freddie, born at North Bloomfield, New York, on May 16, 1886; died July 22, 1886 at North Bloomfield [The paper scrap gives his place of birth and death as Lima, New York.]
  • Samuel Rebecca Rumsey, born a Lima, New York, on April 26, 1888
  • Henry James Rumsey, born at North Bloomfield, New York, on August 7, 1890; died at Veterans Hospital, Staten Island, New York, on July 15, 1948  [The paper scrap gives his place of birth as Lima, New York.]
  • Harry Benham Rumsey, born at North Bloomfield, New York, on September 22, 1893; died at Rochester, New York, on April 21, 1934
  • Alza Louise Rumsey, "Allie", born at Honeoye Falls, New York, on January 7, 1897
  • Lulu May Rumsey, born at Honeoye Falls, New York, on July 19, 1899; died at Rochester, New York, on January 21, 1942
A paper scrap tucked in the Bible has much of the same information, with a few discrepancies.

Heading the page below:  "Minerva Horton, Her Book 185[?]"; the last digit is smeared.  Minerva's oldest child William was born about 1842, so she apparently did not have the Bible before her marriage, but a few years into it.  This page has the names: ? Horton; Sarah Horton; Lucy Horton; Alice Horton; Ella Horton; John Parlett; Samuel Parlett; Samuel Rumsey; Eddie Albrow.  Note:  Edgar Albro married Minerva's youngest daughter Eliza J. Horton.  I'm not sure how the Parlett fellows fit in.

Another page seems to be doodling, with the names of Minerva's daughter Eliza written twice; the name of Eliza's husband Edgar Albro written three times; the name of Lusey or Lucy Horton; and the surname Felps, possibly for Phelps.

Other items tucked in the album include two pressed flowers, the photograph of a house, with information on the reverse, and a scrap of cloth.

Family Bible with Records of Alfred Bullock and Wife Hannah (Rimer) Bullock

Section of a Bible with Family Record pages containing information on the family of Alfred Bullock and wife Hannah (Rimer) Bullock, who were married on February 10, 1825.

The Bible is approximately 10-3/4" by 8-1/2" inches and was published in Cooperstown, New York, in 1823.  The section still with the Records pages measures a bit over a 1/2" thick.

Bear in mind that the dates entered on the Records pages may have been entered by someone relying on memory or secondhand information, so may or may not be reliable.  That said, the handwriting is definitely of the style of the early 1800s.

An enlargement of the Marriages page:

According to information gleaned online, it appears that Alfred and Hannah were natives of the State of New York. They lived in Orange County, New York, for at least part of their lives and are buried in the Laurel Grove Cemetery at Port Jervis, New York.

Note: Two different birth dates are shown for Alfred Bullock.   Below, the left of the facing Births pages.  Click on an image to enlarge it.

  • Alfred Bullock was born November 26, 1800 or 1801 [the last two digits are smeared]
  • Hannah Rimer was born September 22, 1802.
  • Sarah Maria Bullock was born November 7, 1825
  • Francis T. Bullock was born December 19, 1829 [shown as Francis Theodore Bullock on the right facing page
  • Eliza Jane Bullock was born January 25, 1834
  • Alfred Bullock, Jr., was born August 22, 1837
  • Emaline Amanda Bullock was born November 17, 1839  [entered twice, presumably as the first entry did not give her surname]
  • John Floid Bullock was born November 14, 1842 [spelled John Floyd in another entry]
The right of the facing Births pages:

  • Alfred Bullock was born November 26, 1799  [different date from the entry on the left facing page]
