1892 Autograph Album of Lottie Mattoon, Student at Vernon High School at Vernon, Michigan

c1892 autograph album that belonged to a Lottie, who was a student at Vernon High School at Vernon, Michigan.  In lists of students in the various classes, handwritten by Lottie, the only Lottie listed was Lottie Mattoon.

If you have ancestors who were of high school age in the early 1890s, their names should be on Lottie's lists, which are shown farther below.

The album measures approximately 6-1/4" by 4" and contains the names of Lottie's schoolmates and the individual sentiments of 13 of her school friends and - in the only entry beyond the early 1890s, an inscription from 1923 from " Your Loving and Only Daughter, Alma", Lottie's ward Alma Green.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Lottie Lavina Mattoon was born June 27, 1874 in Michigan, the daughter of Col. Gershom W. Mattoon and Agnes (Lindley) Mattoon.  On March 2, 1898, Lottie married Allan John Goodall, an Ontario native born July 13, 1873, whose parents were Allan J. Goodall and Margaret (Fordyce) Goodall.  The younger Alan's birth name was Allan Henderson Goodall, as Ontario birth records show, but he gave his name as Allan John Goodall, Jr., on his World War I Draft Registration Card.

Lottie and Allan farmed at Shiawasee, Michigan.  I didn't find records of any children for them, but in 1920 they had two wards in their household, one of whom, Alma Green, inscribed the page shown below in 1923 at Owosso, Michigan.  I found online the obituary of Basil J. Flynn, whose first marriage had been in 1929 to Alma Green Goodall; sadly Alma and their son died in childbirth in 1931.

Lottie Lavina (Mattoon) Goodall died in 1952, and her husband Allan in 1958.  They're buried in the Greenwood Cemetery at Vernon, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1895-1899 autograph album of Olive C. Harr of Waterloo, Michigan.  The album contains inscriptions from Olive's relatives, schoolmates, teachers and friends from the Michigan towns of Waterloo Township, Lyndon Township, Chelsea and Stockbridge.

The album measures approximately 5-3/4" by 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 25 of Olive's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teachers.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Olive C. Harr was born August 13, 1884 at Waterloo, Michigan, the daughter of Andrew and Rosina (Renschler ?) Harr.  Olive's brother Walter G. Harr and sisters Matilda Harr, "Tillie",  and Mary Harr inscribed pages in her album.

On June 20, 1916 at Waterloo, Michigan, Olive C. Harr married Clarence Earl Beeman, who was born May 6, 1887 at Lyndon, Michigan, the son of Orson and Sarah Beeman.  Clarence didn't inscribe a page in Olive's album, but his brother older brother Clyde did.

I believe Olive and Clarence had at least two children.  Clarence died in 1970 and Olive in 1975.  They're buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Waterloo, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Two of Olive's schoolteachers inscribed pages:
  • Dwight C. Marion; inscribed at Lyndon, Michigan, on January 9, 1896
  • Corinne E. Seeger

1880s Autograph Album that may have belonged to Walter Herbert Moore of Pontiac, Michigan, Area

Autograph album presented to Herb by Cora on December 25, 1880.  "Herb" may have been Walter Herbert Moore and Cora his future wife Cora E. Mills, whom he married on December 24, 1881 in Oakland County, Michigan.

Cora E. Mills inscribed a page at Oxford, Michigan, on January 2, 1881.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" by 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of over 60 of Herb's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct and hopefully with the correct identity of album owner "Herb" as Walter Herbert Moore - corrections, additions and alternate theories of Herb's identity requested:

Walter Herbert Moore was born about October 1859, the son of James Moore and ?.  If you have information on this Herb's mother, please leave a comment or contact me directly.   Other inscribers who expressed kinship:
  • Aunt Mary, who inscribed her page to C. & H.
  • Cousin Nettie
  • Cousin May, age 9
  • Cousin William H. Underwood, who inscribed his page at Pontiac, Michigan, on February 17, 1885

On December 24, 1881 at Pontiac, Michigan, Walter Herbert Moore married Cora E. Mills, daughter, according to her Michigan Death Record, of Platt Rogers Mills and Hannah L. (Babcock) Mills.

Walter Herbert Moore and Cora raised their family of at least two children in Oakland County, Michigan.  Cora died in 1922 and Herb in 1931.  They're buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Pontiac, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or an alternate theory of the identity of the Herb who owned this autograph album, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card: Lydia Park, 66, Died in March 1902; Possibly Lydia (Lamunyon) Park, Buried in Owosso, Michigan

Memorial Card printed upon the death of Lydia Park, age 66, in March of 1902.  The card was printed by the Ideal Memorial Card Company of Bluffton, Ohio.

The card was found in an album of cabinet photographs, Cartes de Visite, tintypes and memorial cards, which I thought were from the same family.  But when taking out the individual items for scanning, I noticed that some of them had antique mall markings.  Some of the items in the album have an obvious relationship, but others may have been randomly inserted to fill the spaces.  Irritating for those of us who like to tie up loose ends.

Lydia may have been Lydia (Lamunyon) Park, daughter of Abel Lamunyon and Nancy (Walker) Lamunyon.  This Lydia, born in Michigan in 1836, married John Handy Park about 1852.  She died at Owosso, Michigan and is buried there, according to her death certificate, in the Dewey Cemetery, also known as Oak Grove Cemetery.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you feel that Lydia was a different person, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Calling Card of S. F. Daggett of Pishon's Ferry, Maine; presumably Samuel Franklin Daggett, born at Clinton, Maine in 1857

Calling card of S. F. Daggett of Pishon's Ferry, Maine, presumably Samuel Franklin Daggett, "Frank", of Clinton, Maine, and presumably from the the 1870s or early 1880s, before Frank left Maine for Michigan.

Pishon's Ferry was based on the Clinton, Maine, side of the Kennebec River.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Samuel Franklin Daggett, "Frank", was born May 4, 1857 at Clinton, Maine, son of Nathan Daggett and Mary Elizabeth (Linnell) Daggett.  On June 1, 1883 at Alpena, Michigan, Frank married Elizabeth Ann Levi, "Jeannette", a native of Ontario whose parents I don't know.   They would have several children.

Frank was a grocer at Alpena, Michigan.  An unverified reference online indicates he died in 1903, but I haven't found a record to verify that.  Frank's wife, who died in 1919 is shown as Jeannette Daggett in the Find-a-Grave listing of herself and two of her children.  As for Samuel Franklin Daggett, "Frank", himself, he's not listed on Find-a-Grave with them, but perhaps his stone was overlooked.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

c1870s Photograph Album of Tintypes of the Brown and Miles Families of Vermont and Michigan

c1870s photograph album with 11 tintypes of the Brown and Miles families of Hinesburg, Vermont and Schoolcraft, Michigan.

Other surnames appearing in the album or appearing in the family history of the people pictured:
  • Boynton
  • Burns
  • Earl
  • Livermore
  • Peters
  • Ray
  • Scott
The album measures approximately 5-3/4" by 4" and contains eleven tintypes and gem tintypes.  Not everyone is identified, and the identifications appear to have been made after the album was compiled, with at least one mistake.

The tintypes, in page order:
  • "Addison Brown, Married Aunt Mary Ann, Sister of J. F. Miles".   Actually Addison Makepeace Brown was the son of Mary Ann (Miles) Brown, second wife of Ebenezer Lakin Brown.  Mary Ann (Miles) Brown was the sister of Dr. John Fay Miles.  Addison Makepeace Brown married Mollie Eliza Earl in 1885.
  • Frank Boynton.  Presumably related to Fidelia (Boynton) Miles, wife of Dr. John Fay Miles
  • "Ella Livermore, her mother sister to John Fay Miles".  Ella was the daughter of James Livermore and Helen Juliette (Miles) Livermore, who was a sister to Dr. John Fay Miles.
  • "A Friend of Auntie May" - appears to be a boy of about ten years, but possibly a girl
  • "Auntie May, Allie Peters (Aunt James daughter)" - Aunt James could be Aunt Janes; see for yourself in the second image below.
  • Aunt Helen Ray, Grandpa Miles' Sister".  Helen (Miles) Ray was born in 1835 at Hinesburg, Vermont, daughter of Nathaniel Miles and Roxalana (Bishop) Miles and wife of Ralph Elmer Ray.  She died at Burlington, Vermont in 1880.  "Grandpa Miles" was presumably Dr. John Fay Miles.
  • "Addison, Edd, Ada Brown"; pictured below.  They were the children of Ebenezer Lakin Brown.  Ada was Amelia Ada Brown, whose mother was Ebenezer's first wife Amelia W. (Scott) Brown, who died in 1848.  Edd and Addison were Edward Miles Brown and Addison Makepeace Brown, whose mother was Ebenezer's second wife Mary Ann (Miles) Brown.
  • "School Friends of Auntie May" - facing pages with tintypes of two young women
  • "Ada Brown"; Amelia Ada Brown, daughter of Ebenezer Lakin Brown and first wife Amelia W. (Scott) Brown.
  • "Charles and Mary Miles", shown below.  Although two people are mentioned on the reverse of the mat of this gem tintype, only one young man is pictured, presumably the Charles Miles mentioned. Charles may have been Charles Noble Miles, born in 1848 at Hinesburg, Vermont, son of Dr. John Fay Miles and Fidelia (Boynton) Miles.  Charles married Helen or Ellen J. Burns of New York; he died in 1928 in Idaho.  Fittingly, Charles had a sister, Mary Ann Miles.

Below, tintype of Amelia Ada Brown and her half-brothers Edward Miles Brown and Addison Makepeace Brown:
