Photograph of Charles and Lydia (Diffin) Eastwood of Maine and Massachusetts

Photograph of two handsome older people identified on reverse as Charles and Lydia (Diffin) Eastwood.  Lydia was further identified as the sister of Emily Cleland.

Lydia M. Diffin was born about 1854, possibly at Robbinston, Maine, daughter of James and Mary Elizabeth (Lane) Diffin, born at St. David Parish, New Brunswick, and Calais, Maine, respectively.

Lydia's paternal grandparents were John and Mary (Alexander) Diffin.  Her maternal grandparents were Clement and Nancy Almira (Stewart) Lane.

About 1890 Lydia married Charles Eastwood, son of Henry and Rachel (Heffler [Hafler, Haffer and other variants]) Eastwood, born in England and Nova Scotia respectively.  Charles was born 6 July 1850 in Nova Scotia and came to the United States about 1871.

Charles had been married before, to Mary J. Trupie, and had a daughter Alice Josephine Eastwood, born at Melrose, Massachusetts, on 20 November 1883.   I'm not positive of Mary's maiden name, but the name appears in very nice handwriting on Alice's marriage record to Sidney L. Shoules on 2 March 1907 at Malden, Massachusetts.

Charles and Lydia lived at Malden, Massachusetts, at least through the 1940 Census.  Charles worked in the footwear industry, eventually having his own shop where he specialized in repairing rubber boots.

It appears they brought up Lydia's niece, Myrtle Diffin, born in Maine about 1899.

The sister referenced on the reverse of the photograph, Emily C. Diffin,  married Horace Cleland and raised a large family at Robbinston, Maine.

If you have any corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1911 Candid Photograph of Valentine Jenkins Pease of Edgartown, Massachusetts

Candid 1911 photograph of Valentine Jenkins Pease of Edgartown, Massachusetts.  The photograph itself is approximately 4" x 3", with a thin border all around.

Edgartown, Oct-9-1911
To my friend Geo. B. Jackson, Waterville, Me.
Taken in my back yard in Sept. by a little girl cousin.
V. J. Pease

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Valentine Jenkins Pease was born 23 July 1839 in Massachusetts, the son of Captain Henry and Susan S. (Huxford) Pease, born at Nantucket and Edgartown, Massachusetts, respectively.

V. J.'s paternal grandparents were Valentine and Love (Daggett) Pease.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel and Susan (Sprague, I think) Huxford.

On 20 June 1869 at New Bedford, Massachusetts, V. J. married Ellen Cunningham, daughter of William and Mary (Hurley) Cunningham, both Irish immigrants to Massachusetts.  Ellen was born 26 August 1842 at Needham, Massachusetts.

I don't know if the couple had any children or not.  I didn't find any in the Censuses.

Update of 30 July 2012: I've heard a tragic story from a reader related to Ellen (Cunningham) Pease that Valentine and Ellen did have a child, a daughter Inez Hattie Pease, born in 9 September 1867 at Edgartown.

Tragically, on 20 March 1877 at Boston, Massachusetts, Inez jumped aboard an elevator that had already started, fell a bit short and was crushed by the ceiling above.  This was in the days before elevators had safety gates; her death led to their requirement.

One source online mentioned that V. J. Pease traveled many times to Maine and New Hampshire in his capacity as salesman for a woolen concern.  This is likely the source of his friendship with George B. Jackson, a tailor at Waterville.  At the time, V. J. was living at Roxbury, Massachusetts.  When he retired, he returned to Edgartown to live.

The Pease family is an interesting one.  Herman Melville's brief career at sea included a voyage as a member of the crew of whaler Acushnet, captained by Valentine Pease [grandfather of Valentine Jenkins Pease].  Melville jumped ship in Hawaii, as did half of the crew before the four year voyage was concluded.  Some feel that Valentine was the model for the tyrannical Captain Ahab in Melville's classic Moby Dick, though Valentine's reputation at Edgartown was a positive one.

George Benton Jackson, the recipient of the photograph of Valentine Jenkins Pease, was born about 1864 at Montville, Maine, son of William P. and Mary Ploome (Jackson) Jackson.

George's paternal grandparents were George Waterhouse Jackson and wife Hannah (Rowell) Jackson.  His maternal grandparents were Timothy and Elmira B. (French) Jackson.

On 10 April 1898 at Waterville, Maine, George married Mary A. "May" Morse, daughter of Comfort T. and Rhoda Ann (Ballentine) Morse.

One of May's brothers, Robert I. Morse, went to Washington state and founded a hardware store, which I think is still in business today.  Papers from the R. I. Morse family are kept at the Center for Pacific Northwest Studies.  Among the papers are letters from Robert I. Morse's second wife Ada to May (Morse) Jackson, wife of George Benton Jackson.

Photograph of a Young Man named McPheters; Old Town, Maine studio

Cabinet photograph of a young man identified on reverse as Geanie McPheters, though I may have deciphered his first name incorrectly.  The photograph was taken by the Howe studio of 113 Main Street, Old Town, Maine.

I'm hoping that a reader will come forward with information on this young man.

I found a Eugene McPheters, born about 1870, in the 1880 Census of Greenbush, Maine, with parents Stewart and Sarah McPheters and siblings Elizabeth and Gratia, but I don't know if I have the correct person.

If you have information on the young man in the photograph, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Evelyn's page

Approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/4", with a page signed by Evelyn herself and 47 others, from Maine, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.

Title Page

Evelyn Eliza Hicks was born about 1872 at Robbinston, Maine, perhaps in South Robbinston in the area of Maple Point on Boyden Lake.

Her parents were Valentine and Mary Ellen (Noddin) Hicks, born at Buctouche, Kent County, New Brunswick, and Deer Island, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, respectively.

Her paternal grandparents were Israel Hicks of New Brunswick and wife Abigail (Carlisle) Hicks, born at Meddybemps, Maine.

Her maternal grandparents were George Noddin and Eliza (Lord) Noddin of New Brunswick; they moved to Robbinston, Maine.

Evelyn's sisters Carrie Maud Hicks, who married Clifford S. Lovell, and Lucy M. Hicks, who married Howard A. Cline, signed pages in the autograph album.

In 1894, Evelyn Eliza Hicks married Walter F. Anderson, son of George and Mary J. Anderson of Stoneham, Massachusetts.  Walter signed two pages in Evelyn's autograph album, below.

Walter F. Anderson of Stoneham, Massachusetts, 1891

Walter F. Anderson of Stoneham, Massachusetts, 1892

The couple lived in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.  The 1900 Census found them at Stoneham, Massachusetts, where Walter was employed as a shoe laster.

In the 1910 Census, they were living at Parsonfield, Maine, where Walter was working as a shoemaker.  The 1920 Census found them at  Farmington, New Hampshire; Walter was still working in the shoe industry. The 1930 Census found them farming poultry at Buxton, Maine.

The couple had, I think, four children:
  • Leslie Walter W. Anderson, born about 24 June 1895 at Stoneham, Massachusetts; m. Hazel A. Perkins
  • Bertha E. Anderson, born about 1898 at Massachusetts
  • Earl S. Anderson, born 28 September 1900 at Stoneham, Massachusetts
  • Ethel Hicks Anderson, born 1 January 1902 at Stoneham, Massachusetts

Two signers identified themselves as Evelyn's cousin; more relatives signed, but didn't identify themselves as such.

Memorial Card: Frank Schwartz, born 1861; died June 2, 1908

Memorial card printed on the occasion of the death of Frank Schwartz, "Born in 1861, Died June 2, 1908, Age 47 years, 1 month".

From brief online research, hopefully correct, and hopefully with the correct Frank Schwartz:  [corrections, additions and alternate theories welcome!]

There's a Frank Schwartz with a death date of 2 June 1908, in the Montana Death Index 1907-2007. Whether or not this is the Frank Schwartz to whom the memorial refers, I don't know.  However, the birth year also seems to fit.  The record of Frank's August 32, 1893 marriage in Beaverhead County, Montana, to Catherine I. Macklem indicates that he was 32 years old and that his parents were Joseph and Anna (Woolman) Schwartz.  Her parents were John and Nancy (Patterson) Macklem.

The 1900 Federal Census of Havre, Montana, in Choteau County, contains a listing of a Frank Schwartz born August 1861 in Germany. His occupation was enumerated as wool grower. He had two other men in his household, each designed an employee. One, fellow German native Fred Sass, was listed as a coal miner. The other, Al Flanagan, a native New Yorker and son of Irish-born parents, was listed as a sheep herder.

This Frank Schwartz indicated that he had immigrated to the United States about 1880. Fred Sass had come earlier, about 1873.

If you have information on this or another Frank Schwartz who may be the subject of the memorial card, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Just in case the Memorial Card is for the Frank Schwartz who lived at Havre, Montana:

CDVs of Emma Estelle Drayton of New Jersey, as child and as young woman

Two Cartes de visite depicting Emma Estelle Drayton as a young girl of seven years and as a young woman.

The CDV above was produced by William L. Teush of Boonton, New Jersey.  The identification on reverse, below, shows twice, one a more contemporary one.

The CDV of an older Emma, below, was produced by E. G. Lacey of Morristown, New Jersey.

The identification on reverse shows her married name of Conklin in parentheses.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Emma Estelle Drayton was born 1 February 1863 at Rockaway Valley, New Jersey, the daughter of William Henry Drayton and Jane C. (Tunis) Drayton, both born at Rockaway Valley.

Emma's paternal grandparents were Esau and Agnes (Glass) Drayton.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph M. and Charity (Hill) Tunis.

On 13 March 1881, Emma married Willard W. Conklin.  The couple had at least two children, possibly three.

I found a reference online to various Bible records collected over the years, with a few records referring to the Drayton and Conklin families.  The reference mentioned an H. Mabel Conklin, born 1 November 1882 and an A. A. Conklin, born 5 November 1884.

New Jersey Births and Christenings, 1660-1980 shows an unnamed female child of Willard and Emma born or christened on 1 September 1883.

The 1900 Census of Asbury Park, New Jersey lists Willard, Emma and daughter Aura; Willard was working as a manufacturer of ice cream.

On 7 October 1907, Aura Mabel Conklin married Charles Russell Wharton.  See an earlier post for a photograph of Charles Russell Wharton's mother, Caroline (Apgar) Wharton.

In the 1910 Census of Keyport, New Jersey, Willard and Emma are listed living alone.  Willard was a clerk at a grocery store; no occupation was shown for Emma.

By the time of the 1920 Census, Willard and Emma were at Wall Township, New Jersey; no occupation is listed for either of them.

Emma died in early 1930.  By the time the Census was enumerated that year, Willard was back at Keyport and had married Gertrude Badgeley.  He listed his occupation as proprietor of a grocery store.  Willard died in 1936.

Photograph of Alverdo Romandel Small; Portland, Maine studio

Photograph of a dapper and handsome young man identified on reverse as Verdo Small.   The photograph was taken by the A. S. Davis studio of Middle Street, Portland, Maine.

Thanks to a tip from a Maine genealogy guru, I believe this man to be Alverdo Romandel Small.  Though he was born in Somerset County, he eventually lived at Portland, Maine, where the photograph was taken.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]:

Alverdo Romandel Small was born 7 July 1881 at Cambridge, Maine, son of Charles Albert Small and Ella M. (Burdin) Small, both born at Wellington, Maine.

Alverdo's paternal grandparents were Charles Woodward Small and Draxy Drury Ricker (Buzzell) Small.

His maternal grandparents were Benjamin and Roenah Augusta (Herrick) Burdin.

On 19 November 1907 at Portland, Maine, Alverdo married Ethel M. Wilkie. daughter of John F. and Anna Wilkie.  Unfortunately, the reverse of the marriage record did not transfer to the online record, so I'm missing Ethel's parents' birthplaces and her mother's maiden name.  I believe John and Anna were natives of Canada, but some of the Censuses list New Hampshire and Vermont, which is a concern.

By the way, I've never seen a marriage record so mangled in the indexing as this one.

The couple lived at Portland, Maine, and had at least one child, a son Arthur Wilkie Small.  Alverdo worked at a variety of jobs: clerk at a bank and grocery store and manager of an apartment building.

If you have corrections and additions to the above information, or if you feel that the man in the photograph is a different Verdo Small, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Photograph of Caroline Apgar of New Jersey; married William Colter Wharton

Small mounted photograph of a woman identified on reverse as Caroline (Agpar) Wharton.  The imprint on front is that of the Maag studio, operated, I believe, by Ferdinand W. Maag of Keyport, New Jersey.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Caroline Apgar was born, according to New Jersey, Births and Christenings 1660-1980 on 29 July 1861 at Tewkesbury Township, New Jersey, daughter of Christopher Trimmer Apgar and wife Emily (Flomerfelt) Apgar, both born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

The birthdate conflicts with her year of birth on her headstone, 1860.  Either the birth record or the stone is incorrect, or the 1861 date is the date she was christened, on her first birthday.

To further confuse things, there were at least two other New Jersey births in the 1860s for a Caroline Apgar or Carrie Apgar.  Hopefully, I have chosen the correct Caroline, who went on to marry a Wharton.  If you know that the woman pictured is not the daughter of Christopher Trimmer Apgar and wife Emily (Flomerfelt) Apgar, please leave a comment or contact me directly. Thanks!

Caroline's paternal grandparents were Frederick and Catharine (Trimmer) Apgar.  Her maternal grandparents were Leonard and Catherine (Apgar) Flomerfelt.

On 10 March 1884 at High Bridge, New Jersey, Caroline married William Colter Wharton, son of Richard Bedle Wharton and wife Anna DeForrest (Luyster) Wharton.

The couple made their home at Keyport, New Jersey and had at least two children.  One of their children, Charles Russell Wharton, married Aura Mabel Conklin.  See another post that features two CDVs of Aura's mother, Emma Estelle (Drayton) Conklin.

In the 1920 Census of Keyport, New Jersey, William was working as a trolley motorman.  He died in 1929; Caroline died in 1946.

Photograph of Carolyn Susan Foye of Dover, New Hampshire

Cabinet photograph of young woman identified on the reverse as Carolyn S. Foye.  The photograph was taken by the Hardy studio of 523 Washington Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

The photograph was found with another, of Albertine Henrietta Foss, which has an inscription from Albertinella of Dover, New Hampshire, 1893 to Carolyn.  Albertinella was Albertine Henrietta Foss.  Carolyn and Albertine were schoolmates from Dover, New Hampshire.

See another blog post for the photograph and family history of Albertine Henrietta Foss.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Carolyn Susan Foye was born about 1872 in New Hampshire.  Although I saw one reference online where her birthplace was listed as South Berwick, Maine, nearly all other references show New Hampshire as her birthplace.

Her parents were William P. and Lucy (Hurd) Foye.  William P. Foye was born in either New Hampshire or Maine; Census records indicate both.  Lucy was born in New Hampshire.

Carolyn's paternal grandparents were Thomas and Susan E. (Horne) Foye.  Her maternal grandparents were Joshua and Lucy (Roberts) Hurd.

Carolyn, "Carrie", gave the address to the undergraduates at her graduation from Dover High School in 1890.  Albertine H. Foss was also in this class.  Since the photograph of Albertine inscribed to Carolyn has a date of 1893, and both photographs were taken by the same studio, Hardy, at 523 Washington Street, I wonder if the two young women attended a teachers college together in the Boston area.

On 2 October 1897 at Dover, New Hampshire, Carolyn married Emery Moses Flanders, son of Lorenzo and Hannah (Drew) Flanders.  Emery was born 7 October 1869 at Bridgewater, New Hampshire.

Emery and Carolyn were enumerated in the 1910 Census of Boston, Massachusetts, where Emery was working as a superintendent in a leather factory, and Carolyn was teaching elocution.

By the time of the 1920 Census, the couple was living at Manchester, New Hampshire, where Emery was working in the leather industry, and Carolyn was at home.  I don't know if the couple had any children.

Carolyn had died by the time of the 1930 Census.

Photograph of Albertine Henrietta Foss of Dover, New Hampshire; Boston, Massachusetts studio

Cabinet photograph of a young woman who identified herself on the reverse as "Albertinella H. Foss, Dover, New Hampshire, 1893".  I wasn't able to find an Albertinella H. Foss, but I did find an Albertine Henrietta Foss.  Perhaps Albertinella was a nickname.

The photograph was inscribed to Carolyn and was found with another, both taken by the Hardy studio of Boston, Massachusetts.  The other photograph depicts Carolyn Susan Foye, a schoolmate of Albertine in the Dover, New Hampshire school system, and likely the Carolyn in the inscription.

See another blog post for the photograph and family history of Carolyn Susan Foye.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Albertine Henrietta Foss was born 3 March 1871 at Barrington, New Hampshire.  She was the daughter of James William Foss and Julia Ann (Littlefield) Foss, who were born at Strafford, New Hampshire, and Sanford, Maine, respectively.

Her paternal grandparents were John Babb Foss and Alice (Parshley) Foss.  Her maternal grandparents were Moses and Ruth (Littlefield) Littlefield.

Albertine was a member of the 1890 graduating class of Dover High School, Dover, New Hampshire.  Carolyn S. Foye was also in this class.

It's possible that the two young women attended a teachers college together in the Boston area and graduated in 1893, the date on Albertine's photograph.

About 1895, Albertine married Ernest W. Littlefield, son of Moses Littlefield II and Martha Jane (Ricker) Littlefield.  He was born 19 February 1871 at Sanford, Maine.

Albertine and Ernest were enumerated in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses of Dover, New Hampshire, where Ernest managed a farm.  I don't know if they had any children.

CDV of Ruth Lucretia Godfrey, married Augustus Robinson; Lynn, Massachusetts studio

Carte de visite of a woman identified on reverse as "Ruth Lucretia Godfrey, b. July 18, 1844; m. Augustus Robinson".  The CDV was produced by the E. S. Dunslee studio of 8 Market Street, Lynn, Massachusetts.

From online research, hopefully correct:

Ruth Lucretia Godfrey was born, according to the 1900 US Census of Boston, Massachusetts, in May of 1846, give a year or two either way, which could be 1844.  Perhaps the month on the CDV represents her baptism or perhaps the person giving information to the enumerator was in error.

She was born in Nova Scotia, possibly in Guysborough County, and came to the United States with her family about 1859.  The 1860 Census found the family living at Rockland, Maine.

Ruth's parents were John William Nixon Godfrey and Ruth Ann (Scott) Godfrey.

Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin and Catherine (Bigsby) Godfrey.  Her maternal grandparents were Lemuel and Ruth (Godfrey) Scott.

About 1869 Ruth married Augustus Robinson; he was born about March 1844 in Maine.  I think his parents were Capt. David and Mary Ann (Fuller) Robinson.  The Robinson family was living at Rockland, Maine, at the time of the 1850 Census.

Ruth and Augustus subsequently moved to Boston, Massachusetts.  They had at least one child, a son Harry, born about 1881.

Real Photo Postcard of C. E. Monohon Horseshoeing, Northeast Harbor, Maine

Real photo postcard of the C. E. Monohon Horseshoeing and Jobbing business at Northeast Harbor, Maine.  No doubt one of the three men pictured is owner Charles Edward Monohon.

Another photograph of this building can be seen at the Maine Memory Network.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections welcome]

Charles Edward Monohon was born at Cherryfield, Maine, about 1876, son of John and Ellen (Stackpole) Monohon, born at Machias, Maine, and in Canada, respectively.

Charles married Anna Augusta Wiswell at Ellsworth, Maine, on 1 April 1899.  They had at least one child, Eugene Edward Monohon.

I'm not sure whether Anna died or the couple divorced, but Charles married Jessie E. Leland on 17 November 1908.

1891 Memorial Card of Lorana E. Gilpatrick, likely Danforth, Maine

Memorial card published on the occasion of the death of Lorana E. Gilpatrick, who died 25 April 1891 at the age of 39 years and 7 months.  Nothing on reverse.

From brief online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Lorana Esther Kelley was born September 1852 at or near Selden, Maine, or Weston, Maine, the daughter of Jeremiah and Sarah Parker (Ellis) Kelley, who were born in Massachusetts and Brighton, Maine, respectively.

In 1869 at Weston, Maine, Lorana married Albert Howard Gilpatrick, son of William and Emeline (Cleaves) Gilpatrick. Albert was born about 1848 at Weston, Maine.   Albert and Lorana made their home at Danforth, Maine, where they had five children before Lorana died in childbirth after delivering twins.

CDV of Helen L. Johnson, Class of 1878; Boston studio

Carte de visite of a young woman identified on reverse as "Helen L. Johnson, Class of '78", likely written in her own hand.  The CDV was produced by W. Shaw Warren of 41 Winter Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

Researching online, I found a family tree containing a Helen Louise Johnson, with the identical photograph attached, although that photograph didn't appear to be a CDV, or it was a CDV inserted into an album.

Helen Louise Johnson was born 27 March 1860 at Stoughton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Henry Lewis Johnson and Louisa May (Atherton) Johnson.

Helen's paternal grandparents were Lewis and Esther (Talbot) Johnson.  Her maternal grandparents were Hiram and Hannah (Stoddard) Atherton.

After graduating from high school in 1878, Helen moved on to Bridgewater State Normal School.

On 9 November 1887 at Stoughton, Helen married Arthur Samuel Metcalf, who was born Arthur Erastus Metcalf at Medway, Massachusetts on 5 November 1856, son of Samuel W. and Eliza J. (Partridge) Metcalf.  Apparently Arthur's middle name was changed  between the time of his birth and his marriage.

Arthur died in August 1914.  Helen then moved in with her elderly parents at Stoughton, as enumerated in the 1920 Census of Stoughton.  By the time of the 1930 census, Helen was living with a boarder in her household.  Her parents had probably passed away by that time.

If you have any corrections or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

CDV of Mr. John Blair, taken by Lamson studio of Portland, Maine

Carte de visite of a man identified on reverse as Mr. John Blair.  The CDV was produced by the Lamson studio of 152 Middle Street, Portland, Maine.

Researching online, I found a few possibilities for a John Blair of the approximate age in the Portland area.  Portland was, and still is, a destination city in Maine, so John Blair may have come from anywhere within the state of Maine or even out of state.

There was a John Williams Blair, born about 6 September 1857 at Portland, Maine, son of William and Mary J. Blair.  He married Hattie (Cooney) Blair at New Market, New Hampshire on 30 January 1886.  John W. Blair is listed in the 1860-1940 Censuses of Portland, Maine.

Another John Blair in the Portland, Maine area was John Blair, Jr., born in Scotland about 1864, son of John and Mary Blair, enumerated in the 1880 Census of Portland.

There were other John Blairs throughout the state of Maine.

If you recognize the young man in the CDV from your family albums, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

CDV of Mrs. D. B. Gardiner of 143 Main Street, Westerly, Rhode Island

Carte de visite of a woman identified on reverse as Mrs. D. B. Gardiner of 143 Main Street, Westerly, Rhode Island.

I don't know if the initials D. B. were hers or those of her husband.   Also, I'm not sure if Gardiner was the correct spelling of her name; some records for the same people show Gardner and Gardiner interchangeably.

There's a Desire B. Gardiner, daughter of Caroline Sisson, and wife of Charles Gardiner, born about 1840, listed in the 1880 Census of Westerly, Rhode Island.  I'm thinking that the woman in the photograph was born earlier than 1840, but I'd appreciate readers' feelings on that.

There's a Dorcas B. Gardiner, born about 1832, who lived at Westerly, Rhode Island, but Gardiner was her maiden name.  She was the daughter Jabez Champlin Gardiner and wife Eliza (Bicknell) Gardiner.  I suppose it's possible that the person who wrote the identification had the marital status wrong.  And, again, I think the woman in the CDV was born earlier than 1832.

If you have an idea of the complete identity of Mrs. D. B. Gardiner of 143 Main Street, Westerly, Rhode Island, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Baby Photo of Evelyn Adrienne Maguire of Leeds, Maine

Photograph of a baby identified on reverse as Evelyn Adrienne Maguire at 9 months and 5 days.  The photograph was taken by the Hammond Brothers studio of Lewiston, Maine.

From online research, hopefully correct:

Evelyn Adrienne Maguire was born 26 November 1911 at Leeds, Maine, the daughter of Harold and Marion Adrienne (Manter) Maguire, both also born at Leeds.

Her paternal grandparents were Oscar and Sarah (Gray) Maguire.  her maternal grandparents were Arthur Wilson Manter and Mary Melvina (Wheeler) Manter.

I found her in the Census up to 1920, but lost her after that.  One of Evelyn's brothers named his daughter Evelyn.

If you have corrections or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Stephen Lincoln Goodale
Secretary, Maine Board of Agriculture from 1856-1873

Stephen Lincoln Goodale, his Life Work in Behalf of Maine Agriculture, Address Delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Maine Board of Agriculture, State House, Augusta, January 20, 1898, by Samuel L. Boardman, Ex-Secretary

Stephen L. Goodale was born in South Berwick, August 14, 1815.  His father was Enoch Goodale.  In 1816 the family settled in Saco, where Stephen spent his subsequent life.  His father engaged in business and erected the building on Maine street where C. L. Percy's drug store is now located; here he sold books and chemicals.  From his earliest youth Stephen Goodale was surrounded by a scientific atmosphere, and brought into contact with the physicians and teachers who visited his father's store.  He entered Thornton Academy in March, 1828, and continued his studies there until 1831.  Among his classmates were some who afterward became distinguished, among them, Hon. George F. Shepley, United States circuit judge, John Shepley, Thomas M. Hayes and the late Captain R. F. C. Hartley.  Instead of going to college, as most of his classmates did, he followed his peculiar bent and went into business with his father.  In 1837 the store was relinquished to him, and he continued to conduct the business then until 1855, carrying on meantime special studies connected with pharmacy and agriculture.  He married in Bangor, September 23, 1838, Prudence Aiken Nourse.  In 1841 he bought the place on North street, Saco, where he resided until his death.  The extensive grounds he devoted to scientific horticulture and arboriculture, and he had one of the finest collections of trees and shrubs in the State.  For forty years he carried on experiments in the application of science to plant life, agriculture, forestry, fruit and flower culture, and artificial fertilizers.  He was Secretary of the State Board of Agriculture from 1856 to 1872, and was the author of a number of scientific treatises.  For ten years he was Trustee, for ten Vice-President, and for more than twenty years President of the Saco and Biddeford Savings Institution.  He was one of the seven men who incorporated York Institute in 1867, only two of whom survive.  He retained his interest in Thornton Academy and was a member of its alumni association.  He leaves five children: Prof. George Lincoln Goodale, Director of the Botanic Garden of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.; Miss Caroline Hopkins Goodale; Benjamin Nourse Goodale and Dr. Walter Temple Goodale, Bowdoin College, 1874, of Saco; and Alfred Montgomery Goodale, University of Maine, 1875, Superintendent of the Boston Manufacturing Company, Waltham, Mass.  A large number of friends were present at the funeral of Stephen L. Goodale, Sunday, November 8.  The last rites were performed at 1:30 PM at the residence on North street, and the interment was at Laurel  Hill.  Rev. Philip H. Moore conducted the funeral service, which was simple, without any singing.  There was a great many beautiful flowers in the room when the service was held.  Among those present were representatives of most of Saco's prominent families, and many business men.
