1900 Photograph of Edward Kilburn Robinson (1883-1971), M.H.S. 1900; at Graduation from, presumably, Melrose High School, Melrose, Massachusetts

c1900 photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as "Ned K. Robinson, M.H.S., '00".  The photograph was taken at one of the Notman studios, which included Boston, Massachusetts; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Poland, Maine at the Poland Spring House.

The young man was presumably Edward Kilburn Robinson (1883-1971), who was living at Melrose, Massachusetts, at the time the 1900 Census was enumerated, with his widowed mother and younger brother in the household of Walter C. Stevens.  "M.H.S.' may have stood for Melrose High School.

Edward was born 16 April 1883 at Littleton, New Hampshire, son of Benjamin F. Robinson, a druggist and printer, and Emily Adeline (Kilburn) Robinson, "Addie". Read more about Addie's family here; it mentions that she was a photographer and painter.

Edward graduated in the Class of 1904 at Dartmouth College and became a writer and editor at Ginn & Company. He and wife Hope (Dunlap) Robinson, a Kansas native, had at least one child, a daughter born in Belmont, Massachusetts, in 1913. All three are buried in the South Dartmouth Cemetery at Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

1880s Autograph Album of William Chinn Polk (1860-1949), Mainly While in Mobeetie, Texas; with his Later Notes

Autograph album kept by William Chinn Polk (1860-1949), mainly while he was living at Mobeetie, Texas, where he apparently had a drug store at one time and may also have worked for noted cattle dealer Charles Rath, born Carl Gottfried Rath, whose wife Carrie inscribed a page in the album.

William may have been the Billy Polk mentioned in Chapter 21 of The Rath Trail, by Ida Ellen Rath.

The gem sized photograph stamp affixed to the inside front cover presumably shows William Chinn Polk himself.

William was the son and brother of noted architects Willis Webb Polk and Willis Jefferson Polk.  See an incredible sketch, shown farther below, that Willis Jefferson Polk made of the Josephine Hotel at Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The album measures approximately 7" by 4", has detached covers and contains the sentiments of 30 of William's relatives and friends.  William added notes to several of the pages, including one 65 years later.

An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

William Chinn Polk was born in 1860 in Missouri, the son of architect Willis Webb Polk and his first wife Parthenia Frances (Dye) Polk, who died in 1866.  William had a sister, Sarah, who died young.  Willis Webb Polk then married Endemial Drane and had several more children, three of whom inscribed pages in William's album.

William's younger half brother, Willis Jefferson Polk, inscribed a page at Hots Springs Arkansas, on December 28, 1884, and included a incredible sketch of the Hotel Josephine.

William's younger half sisters Endie and Dasie, or Daisy, also inscribed pages.  Sadly, Endemial Polk, "Endie", died shortly after the era of the album, in 1890.

Sister Dasie, or Daisy (Polk) DeBuyer-Mimeure (1874-1963) went on to have a noted life, especially known for her relief efforts in France during and after World War I.  She received the Medaille de Reconnaissance and was made a Chevalier in the Order of the Legion of Honor.  William added a note 65 years after Dasie's 1884 inscription, to the point that Dasie had visited him at Weston, Missouri, in the Winter of 1949.

About 1891 in Weston, Missouri, after the era of this autograph album, William married Minnie Hillix.  I believe they had one child, a daughter, Ellen Rebecca Polk, who married George H. Calvert and died fairly young in 1934.  William worked as clerk and cashier at a bank in Weston, Missouri.

He died in 1949; Minnie had predeceased him in 1947.  They're buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Weston, Missouri.

James Dickerson of Mobeetie, Texas, pasted his photograph to a page inscribed by Retta A. Griffith of DeKalb, Missouri.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card for Clarissa (Bull) Otis (1828-1908) of New York, Illinois and Kansas

Memorial card of Clarissa (Bull) Otis, wife of Leander Vanness Otis.  Nothing on reverse.

Clarissa was born April 2, 1828 in New York and died March 6, 1908 in Kansas.  Before moving to Decatur County, Kansas, the Otis family had lived for a while at Raritan, Illinois.

Leander Vanness Otis died not long after his wife, on November 19, 1908.  They're buried in the Shibboleth Cemetery at Dresden, Kansas, along with some of their children.

I found Clarissa's maiden name in a listing of Decatur County, Kansas, marriage records, one of which  was for the marriage of one of her daughters, whose name was shown as "Unreadable", but was presumably  Mary Ida Otis, who married Joshua A. Amlin.  Note:  The record shows Joshua's surname as Aurlin, but his stone and other records show Amlin.

If you have more information on Clarissa (Bull) Otis or Leander Vanness Otis, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1899-1905 Autograph Album with Inscriptions to Albert Gross, Sue & Gaston from Inscribers in Topeka, Kansas, and Buffalo, New York

1899-1905 autograph album that has inscriptions to three names: Albert Gross, Sue and Gaston; from inscribers at Buffalo, New York, and Topeka, Kansas.

One of the owners encased the album in a protective covering, shown below.

Hopefully, the inscriptions in the album and the few kinship clues will lead a reader to identifying Albert, Gaston and Sue.

The first end paper, in case these initials mean something to a reader.

Below, examples of pages inscribed to each:

Mrs. Cassie L. Chadwick; inscribed to Albert Gross on October 27, 1905.  "M.W.G."

Lizabeth, cousin; inscribed at Topeka, Kansas, on July 9, 1903; inscribed to Gaston

Albert Gross, Sue and/or Gaston may have been involved with the Star Theatre, presumably the one at Buffalo, New York, as the image below appears to have been a work schedule.

If you can piece together the clues in this album, from the images above and from the list of inscribers below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Elizabeth Strieb, Lizzie", was born in Indiana in 1862, the daughter of George and Katherine Elisabetha (Stadler) Streib.  Lizzie's sister Mary C. (Streip) Roth and her husband John C. Roth inscribed pages in Lizzie's album.  Mary's page:

Lizzie's brother, who spelled his name as Jacob Striepe, and his wife Hannah Savilla (Maurer) Striepe inscribed pages.  Jacob's page:

On March 9, 1886 at Highland, Kansas, Lizzie, recorded as Elizabeth Stripe, married Walter Robert Brant.  Walter inscribed a page in Lizzie's album in 1885.  Walter's sister Addie and her future husband Frederick L. Pierce also inscribed pages.  Walter's page:

Lizzie and Walter had, I believe, four children, one of whom died young and one of whom, John Franklin Brant, inscribed a page in his mother's album in 1907, when it apparently came to light years later.

Walter died in 1898 and Lizzie in 1925.  They're buried with their young son George in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Leona, Kansas.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Nellie Christine Grant was born in 1873 in Kansas, the daughter of Johann Peter Grant, who may have Americanized his surname, and Anna Sophia (Stromquist) Grant.  Nellie's brother Eben inscribed a page in her album.

On March 20, 1898 in McPherson County, Kansas, Nellie Christine Grant married Carl Gustav Karlsson Almen, who was born in Sweden in 1867 and emigrated to the United States about 1885.  Nellie and Carl made their home at McPherson, Kansas, where they ran a drug store, and had at least two children.  They may have had more children who didn't survive childhood, as there are several graves in the McPherson Cemetery of Almen children who were born and died during the relevant time frame.

Nellie died in 1939 and Carl in 1943.  They're buried in the McPherson Cemetery at McPherson, Kansas, with other people with the surname Almen.  There are many people with the surname Grant buried in this cemetery as well.

1888-1918 autograph album that belonged to Mary A. Walters of Hiawatha, Kansas, with inscriptions in the early 1900s and 1918 from Mary's son Harold Dwight Justice.

The album, which measures approximately 6" by 3-1/2", is missing its covers and perhaps some pages from the front and back.  It contains the sentiments of about 20 of Mary's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Mary A. Walters was born about September 1876, the daughter of Morgan Walters and Hannah Anne (Morgan) Walters.  Mary had, I believe, four siblings, all of whom inscribed pages in her album.

John Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on March 28, 1888.  Mary's brother

Sarah J. Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on November 25, 1888.  Mary's sister

David Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Mary's brother David

Emma L. Walters; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on January 28, 1897.  Mary's sister.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship relationship:
  • Uncle David; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, in Brown County, on March 29, 1888
  • Evan Evans; inscribed on January 20, 1889.  Mary's cousin
  • Lazarus Morgan; inscribed at Hiawatha, Kansas, on March 29, 1888.  Mary's cousin
Tucked in the album, the funeral notice of Mrs. Effie Elliott, who died in December 1945 and was buried in the Hiawatha Cemetery at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Presumably Effie (Scull) Elliott.

On January 4, 1905 in Brown County, Kansas, Mary Ann Walters married Willis Earl Justice of Ohio.  They lived in Brown County, Kansas, and had at least two children, one of whom, Harold Dwight Justice, inscribed two pages in his mother's album.

Mary, who died in 1960, and Willis, who died in 1974, are buried in the Hiawatha Cemetery at Hiawatha, Kansas.  Their Find-a-Grave memorials feature a photograph of each.
