Memorial Cards of Rebecca (Hodgdon) Lancaster (abt 1819-1895) & son Edwin Lancaster (abt 1846-1893) of Enfield, Maine

Memorial cards for Rebecca (Hodgdon) Lancaster (abt 1819-1895) and her son Edwin Lancaster (abt 1846-1893) of Enfield, Maine.

Rebecca died on June 11, 1895 at the age of 76 years and 12 days. She was born in Kenduskeag, Maine, the daughter of Jonathan Hodgdon and Judith (Lancaster) Hodgdon.

About 1837, Rebecca married John L. Lancaster (1814-1894), a native of Bangor, Maine. By 1850 the family was settled in Enfield, Maine.

In addition to son Edwin, Rebecca was also predeceased by her husband John in 1894; sadly, there's no accompanying card for John.

If you have information to share on the Hodgdon and Lancaster families of Penobscot County, Maine, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Memorial Card for Bessie M. Cole (1881-1903) of Sebago, Maine

Memorial card in memory of Bessie M. Cole, who died 21 March 1903 at the age of 21 years.

She was presumably Bessie M. Cole (1881-1903), daughter of Benjamin Franklin Cole (1852-1910) and Alma L. (McKenney) Cole (1854-1911) of Sebago, Maine.

Bessie, who was born [page 82] December 1881, at Sebago, Maine, died, unmarried, at Sebago, Maine, of acute tuberculosis. She, her parents and other relatives are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery at Bridgton, Maine.

If you have information on the Cole and McKenney families, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Late 19th, Early 20th Century Photograph Album of the Way and Grant Families of Canterbury, New Brunswick

Late 19th, early 20th century photograph album of photographs and CDVs  Several of those pictured were from the Way and Grant families of Canterbury, New Brunswick, which had several interconnections.

The album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 7" and contains 23 photographs, two memorial cards and the image of a painting of a sailing vessel.

Identified people:

Way Siblings and offspring:
  • Harry LeBaron Way (1883-1941), "Barry"who married Effie Rosella Harvey; they moved to Maine

Grant Siblings

Memorial Cards
  • Memorial Card for Emil White, born Oct. 29, 1893; died Feb. 17, 1913. Age 19 years, 3 mos. 19 days.  Emil White (1893-1913) (LeBlanc) was the son of Narcisse LeBlanc (Nelson White) and Helen Angeline (Chomereau dit St. Vincent) LeBlanc (White). Emil's sister Hermina (White-LeBlanc) Way (1886-1985) married Percy Leroy Way (1884-1953), a brother to the Way siblings mentioned above.  This connection might explain the Quebec studio imprint and the fact that the age of one unidentified 63 year old man was written in French.  Perhaps the two CDVs from Houtzdale, Pennsylvania, were Emil's parents or grandparents.

Studio imprints:
  • Woodstock, New Brunswick
  • Weston, Bangor, Maine
  • Edwards studio
  • Chase, Foxcroft, Maine
  • Call studio
  • A. B. Carr studio, Old Town, Maine
  • William M. Evans, Houtzdale, Pennsylvania - 2 CDVs which appear to be husband and wife, with the husband's age and birthdate written in French
  • L. P. Vallee studio, No. 10, Rue St. Jean, Quebec
  • Clement studio of Milo, Maine

Harry LeBaron Way (1883-1941), "Barry"

Barry appears to be the young man at right
Harry LeBaron Way (1883-1941), "Barry"
Sarah Adelaid Way, or Adelaid Sarah Way (1886-1950), "Addie"
Emma Jane Grant (1886-1925)
Edward Harris Grant (1876-1957) - or possibly Emma's husband Edmund Angus Grant (1880-1952), if the identification is off

Melbourne Plummer Way (1918-1958), son of Eldon Abel Way (1888-1958) and Eva Sophia (Caswell) Way (1895-)

Emil White (1893-1913)

David Peavey, died 1894 at age 69

Possibly the David Peavey (1825-1894) buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Garland, Maine, husband of Betsey (Wentworth) Peavey (1833-1920).  I'm not sure how or if he ties into the Way and Grant families; hopefully a reader will weigh in.

If you have information on the Way and Grant families of Canterbury, New Brunswick, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card of Roy Delano, Who Died September 25, 1889; possibly a Maine Connection

Memorial card for Roy Delano, who died on September 25, 1889.  Unfortunately, the card bears no other clues to Roy's identity.

Interestingly, the card came with a group of photographs that included a CDV of Lila Evelyn (Cunningham) Delano and a photograph of her son Walter Alpheus Delano of Bucksport, Maine.  However, I have no way or knowing if this is a coincidence.  Lila had a son Leroy who died in 1891.  Perhaps her husband, Capt. Alpheus Delano, had an uncle or cousin by the name Roy or Leroy who died in 1889.

If you know, from research or family lore, of a Roy Delano who died on September 25, 1889, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Thanks for stopping by!

Memorial Card for Daniel Kirby, Who Died January 5, 1901; Presumably Daniel Rogers Kirby of Bellmont, New York

Memorial card of Daniel Kirby, who died on January 5, 1901 at the age of 68.  Nothing on reverse.

Daniel was presumably the Bellmont, New York resident Daniel Rogers Kirby, who died on that date.  He was born about 1832, perhaps July 8, 1832 at Beekmantown, New York, the son of Charles Kirby and Philena (Wilbur) Kirby.  On December 10, 1857,  Mary Turner Racey, or Bracy.

The information above comes from an online source referencing a Family Bible owned by Charles Kirby and then in the possession of relative John Dodge Miles.

I'm not sure if Daniel and Mary had any children of their own, but they had an adopted son John Burton Kirby, who was born about 1860.  Mary died in 1905.  They're buried in the Brainardsville Cemetery at Brainardsville, New York, along with a Burton Kirby, who may have been John Burton Kirby.

If you have information to add on Daniel Rogers Kirby or his wife Mary or John Burton Kirby, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card for Clarissa (Bull) Otis (1828-1908) of New York, Illinois and Kansas

Memorial card of Clarissa (Bull) Otis, wife of Leander Vanness Otis.  Nothing on reverse.

Clarissa was born April 2, 1828 in New York and died March 6, 1908 in Kansas.  Before moving to Decatur County, Kansas, the Otis family had lived for a while at Raritan, Illinois.

Leander Vanness Otis died not long after his wife, on November 19, 1908.  They're buried in the Shibboleth Cemetery at Dresden, Kansas, along with some of their children.

I found Clarissa's maiden name in a listing of Decatur County, Kansas, marriage records, one of which  was for the marriage of one of her daughters, whose name was shown as "Unreadable", but was presumably  Mary Ida Otis, who married Joshua A. Amlin.  Note:  The record shows Joshua's surname as Aurlin, but his stone and other records show Amlin.

If you have more information on Clarissa (Bull) Otis or Leander Vanness Otis, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Cards: Siblings George Washington Park (1824-1889), buried in West Union, Iowa; and Harriet Cleora Smart (1822-1898), buried in Peru, New York

Memorial cards for siblings George Washington Clark (1824-1889) and Harriet Cleora Clark (1822-1898), whose parents were Ira Smart and Elinor (Wilbur) Clark of Peru, New York.

The cards were found in an album of cabinet photographs, Cartes de Visite, tintypes and memorial cards, which I thought were from the same family.  But when taking out the individual items for scanning, I noticed that some of them had antique mall markings.  Some of the items in the album have an obvious relationship, but others may have been randomly inserted to fill the spaces.  Irritating for those of us who like to tie up loose ends.

Because Harriet and George were born in New York, they may have been related to the family of J. D. Bennett, which accounts for several other photographs in the album.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Harriet Cleora Smart was born August 10, 1822 at Peru, New York.   Harriet apparently never married.  As noted on the card, she died October 31, 1898 and is buried in the Allen Cemetery at Peru, New York, with family members.

George Washington Smart was born January 19, 1824, also at Peru, New York.   At some point in the late 1850s, George, his wife Nancy (Loughrin) Smart and three sons moved to Iowa, where they were recorded in the 1860 Census of Westfield, Iowa, with an infant daughter born in Iowa.

George died on August 7, 1889 and is buried with family members in the West Union Cemetery at West Union, Iowa.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Card: Lydia Park, 66, Died in March 1902; Possibly Lydia (Lamunyon) Park, Buried in Owosso, Michigan

Memorial Card printed upon the death of Lydia Park, age 66, in March of 1902.  The card was printed by the Ideal Memorial Card Company of Bluffton, Ohio.

The card was found in an album of cabinet photographs, Cartes de Visite, tintypes and memorial cards, which I thought were from the same family.  But when taking out the individual items for scanning, I noticed that some of them had antique mall markings.  Some of the items in the album have an obvious relationship, but others may have been randomly inserted to fill the spaces.  Irritating for those of us who like to tie up loose ends.

Lydia may have been Lydia (Lamunyon) Park, daughter of Abel Lamunyon and Nancy (Walker) Lamunyon.  This Lydia, born in Michigan in 1836, married John Handy Park about 1852.  She died at Owosso, Michigan and is buried there, according to her death certificate, in the Dewey Cemetery, also known as Oak Grove Cemetery.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you feel that Lydia was a different person, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1894 Memorial Card for David Peavey, Who Died in January 1894; presumably Maine

Memorial card for David Peavey, who died January 22, 1894 at the age of 69 years, 3 months and 8 days.

The card was found with a collection of photographs from Maine, Michigan, New Brunswick and Rhode Island, one of which is the photograph of Helen Eola Mayo, daughter of Benjamin W. Mayo and Ida A. (Peavey) Mayo.  Ida was the daughter of David H. Peavey and Betsey (Wentworth) Peavey.

The photographs:
  • Sam A. Robinson - baby photograph; father of Curtis Skolfield Robinson
  • Bertie Way; by an Escanaba, Michigan studio; presumably Alberta Mabel Way, who had New Brunswick roots
  • Percy Leroy Way; by a Woodstock, New Brunswick studio - he lived for a while in Michigan
  • Sisters Maebelle White and Margaret White; by a Detroit, Michigan studio but from the Hermansville, Michigan area; nieces of the wife of Percy Leroy Way
  • Cabinet card of an unidentified elderly man by the J. F. Gerrity studio of Bangor, Maine; handwriting on reverse: July 23, 1896, 94 years - was the date his birthday celebration, his death date or the date the photograph was taken?
  • Unidentified people in 8 CDVs from Bangor, Maine; Providence, Rhode Island; and Pawtucket, Rhode Island
  • 19th century photograph of students at ? School No 9, possibly Cranford
Because of the inclusion of the photograph of Helen Eola Mayo in the collection, I believe that the David Peavey memorialized was her grandfather father David H. Peavey.  According to a record in Maine Deaths and Burials, 1841-1910, David H. Peavey was born about 1825 and died on January 23, 1894, a day off from that noted on the card.

This David, born possibly at Tuftonborough, New Hampshire, was the son of John S. Peavey and Salley (York) Peavey, who had moved their family to Maine by the time of the birth of their daughter Sarah, born about 1836 at Exeter, Maine.

The 1850 Census of Corinna, Maine, lists a widowed Sally with David and other siblings.  Not long after, on October 31, 1851, at Exeter, Maine, David married Betsey Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth and Hannah (Mann) Wentworth of Exeter.

David and Betsey had at least four children and lived in several Maine towns, all close or not far: Exeter; Charleston; Orneville [designated on the map below as Southeast Piscataquis]; and Garland.  They're buried in the Evergreen Cemetery at Garland, Maine.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you believe that the memorial card is that of another David Peavey, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1891 Memorial Card: Mr. Lilly; printed by Memorial Card Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Memorial card printed by the Memorial Card Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the death of Mr. Lilly on May 28, 1891.

If you have know of a Mr. Lilly who died on May 28, 1891, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1917 Memorial Card: D. F. Coulter; printed by H F. Wendell of Leipsic, Ohio

Memorial card printed by H. F. Wendell of Leipsic, Ohio, on the occasion of the death of D. F. Coulter on January 10, 1917.

If you are familiar with a D. F. Coulter who died on that date, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Interestingly, there was a Daniel F. Coulter who died of pulmonary tuberculosis a week later on January 17, 1917 at Bristol Township in Morgan County, Ohio.  There's a contemorary Bristol Township in Ohio, but it's in Trumbull County.  Presumably the Bristol Township in Morgan County is now known as something else.

Daniel was born April 18, 1853 in Ohio, the son of Charles Coulter and Content (Morey) Coulter, born in Ireland and Maine respectively, according to Daniel's obituary.  Daniel married Sarah Ann Dean and had at least one child, daughter Elizabeth, who was presumably the Lizzie C. Macklem, who was the informant on Daniel's death certificate.  Daniel is buried in the Bristol Cemetery in McConnelsville, Ohio, in Morgan County.

Perhaps the date of death in the memorial card is in error?

Memorial Card: J. W. McWhorter, died October 22, 1906

Memorial card printed by H. F. Wendell & Co. of Leipsic, Ohio, on the occasion of the death of J. W. McWhorter on January 22, 1906.

There was a John Wesley McWhorter  who died at Circleville, Ohio, presumably as the result of being struck by a train or falling off one.  One record gives his death as October 20, 1906, and another as October 21, 1906.  Perhaps the death year on the memorial card is in error.

A newspaper article indicates that McWhorter, "a wealthy stockman" was found in a ditch near the Harrison Street crossing of the Cincinnati and Muskingum Valley railway.  His diamond stickpin, diamond shirt stud and watch were found with him, facts that presumably led authorities to conclude he had died as the result of an accident.

John Wesley McWhorter was born at Albany, Ohio, on September 16, 1856, the son of James McWhorter and Mary (Farabee) McWhorter.  John married Rebecca Graham on April 13, 1875 and had at least one child, daughter Emma Ethelyn McWhorter, born in 1877.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or if you know of a J. W. McWhorter who died on October 22, 1906, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1901 Memorial Card: Abigail (Reed) Lowther, who died in Michigan at the age of 78

Memorial card printed in 1901 on the occasion of the death of Abigail (Reed) Lowther at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 14 days.

The card was found with a cabinet photograph of a woman who may or may not be Abigail herself.  There's no identification or studio imprint to provide a clue.  Nothing on reverse.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Abigail's death record indicates:
  •  Abigail was born August 29, 1822 in Upper Canada, the daughter of Joshua Reed and Elizabeth (Alward) Reed.  At least one record has Abigail's father's name as Josiah.  Additionally, an index for the 1821 Buffalo, New York, marriage of Joshua and Elizabeth has Elizabeth's maiden name as Alworth.
  • Abigail was a widow when she died at Leonidas, Michigan, on March 13, 1901, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 16 days [at variance with the information on the memorial card]
  • Abigail was 18 when she married and had 6 children, 5 of whom were still living at the time of her death
  • Abigail died of enteritis and the complications of old age
  • The informant was J. R. Lowther of Leonidas, Michigan - Abigail's son James Riley Lowther - hopefully the information he supplied was totally correct
Abigail married Lemuel E. Lowther, about 1840 if the information on her death record is correct.  She and Lemuel raised their family at Knox, Ohio, or in Knox County, Ohio; and Leonidas, Michigan.  It seems that at some point in the 1860s, Lemuel and Abigail parted ways.  Lemuel died in 1881 and is buried in the Asbury Cemetery at Dennison, Illinois.  Abigail is buried in the Abscota Cemetery at Burlington, Michigan.

If you have corrections and/or additions, or if your family photographs reveal that the woman in the cabinet photograph above is definitely Abigail (Reed) Lowther, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1892 Memorial Card: Mrs. E. V. Shipley, died January 27, 1892

Memorial Card for the funeral of Mrs. E. V. Shipley, who died January 27, 1892.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

I found an Anne (Spencer) Shipley, who was born November 20, 1837, the daughter of Asa and Phoebe (Piggott) Spencer of Guernsey County, Ohio.  On February 9, 1860, Ann married Emory Vinton Shipley, son of Perry Lloyd Shipley and Adeline Frances (Delauter) Shipley.   Emory was a postmaster; the couple had six children.

By 1880, the couple were living at Barnesville, Ohio; they're buried there at the Southern Cemetery.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Memorial Cards of William Reed Penniman and Daughter-in-Law Mary Ethel (Hall) Penniman of Braintree and Brockton, Massachusetts

See a note of January 22, 2016, added to the end of this post, for further information.

Two memorial cards, one for William R. Penniman of Braintree, Massachusetts, and the other for his daughter-in-law Mary Ethel (Hall) Penniman, wife of Walter Aldrich Penniman, of Brockton, Massachusetts.

The reverse of William's memorial card has the imprint of the maker, Memorial Card Co. of No. 706 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
From brief online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

William Reed Penniman was born 19 October 1820 at Braintree, Massachusetts, son of Thomas Ora Penniman and Dorcas Elizabeth (Reed) Penniman.  On 15 July 1849 at Braintree, Massachusetts, William married Louisa Maria Aldrich, daughter of Nathaniel and Anna (Paine) Aldrich. Louisa was born, I think, 18 August 1831 at Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

William was a prominent contractor, responsible for many buildings in eastern Massachusetts. He was Braintree's representative to the General Court in 1855. Louisa was a professor of music at Hollis Institute in South Braintree.  They had five children:
  1. Helen Louise Penniman, born 10 April 1851; died 30 August 1870
  2. Abby Darling Penniman, born 14 April 1854; married Edward Wilson Thompson
  3. Frederick William Penniman, born 3 Jan 1859; married Annie May Pierce, daughter of Isaac Oliver Pierce and Julia Maria (Brown) Pierce
  4. Walter Aldrich Penniman, born 6 May 1861 at Braintree, Massachusetts; married 1) Mary Ethel Hall, discussed below, and 2) Keziah H. (Murdock) Mank, widow of Everett F. Mank
  5. Lyman Everett Penniman, born 18 August 1868
On 12 November 1885 at Brockton, Massachusetts, son Walter Aldrich Penniman married Mary Ethel Hall, daughter of Augustus Florentine Hall and Susan Elizabeth (Osborne) Hall. Mary Ethel was born 1 December 1861 at East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.  On Census forms, Walter's occupation is listed as carpenter, but he was perhaps a contractor like his father, perhaps in the family business.

Walter and Mary Ethel had a daughter, Rita Mildred Penniman, "May", born 31 October 1890 at Brockton, Massachusetts. She would marry Herman Ralph Eaton at Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1912.

Mary Ethel (Hall) Penniman died of cancer on 19 May 1897 at Brockton, Massachusetts.

Walter Aldrich Penniman married for the second time, on 24 December 1899 at Brockton, Massachusetts, to Keziah H. (Murdock) Mank, daughter of Silas and Sarah Waterman (Perkins) Murdock and widow of Everett F. Mank.

Note of January 22, 2016: Coincidentally, a carte de visite, purchased at a later time, depicting Isabella Calef, a teacher for a while at Brockton, Massachusetts, contains information on the reverse about her student M. Ethel Hall ("Grandma Ethel"); Rita Penniman and Keziah Murdock.

If you have correction and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1921 Memorial Card of Elizabeth Delille, died 4 November 1921, possibly Springfield, Ohio

Memorial card of Elizabeth Delille, who died on November 4, 1921.  The card was produced by the studio of H. F. Wendell of Leipsic, Ohio.

Searching online, I found a death record for a Lizzie Delille who died on November 4, 1921, in Gallia County, Ohio.

She was possibly the daughter, born about 1858 in Ohio, of Joseph and Isabella (Martin) Delille of Springfield, Ohio.

If you can corroborate the the above identity of Elizabeth, or offer an alternative identity, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Springfield, Ohio

Memorial Card in Memory of Mary Russell who Died 10 February 1890 at age 67

Memorial card printed upon the death of Mary Russell, who died 10 February 1890 at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 21 days.  She would have been born about 20 December 1822.

The reverse is blank, except for contemporary pricing data in pencil.  The card was purchased in Maine, which may be a clue - or, then again, a red herring.

If you recognize Mary based on her birth and death dates, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

Thanks for stopping by!

1905 Memorial Card: Esther J. (Lancaster) Chase of Lincoln, Maine

Memorial card printed on the occasion of the death of Esther J. Chase of Lincoln, Maine.  Esther J. Chase, Wife of Lorenzo Chase, Died Sept. 11, 1905, Aged 54 y, 7 m, 18 d.

From brief online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Esther J. (Lancaster) Chase was born January 26, 1851 at Enfield, Maine, daughter of John L. and Rebecca (Hodgdon) Lancaster, who were born at Orono, Maine, and Kenduskeag, Maine, respectively.

On March 25, 1872 at Lincoln Center, Maine, Esther married Lorenzo Cyrus Chase, son of Cyrus Hamlin Chase and Harriet (Bailey) Chase, born at Woodstock, Maine, and possibly Lincoln, or Bangor, Maine, respectively.

Cyrus Hamlin Chase was the son of Stephen Chase, who became the first preacher in Lincoln, Maine, and later served in the Legislature. He was born at Newbury, Massachusetts, moved to Woodstock, Maine, where his children were born and where he was an influential citizen, and later moved to Lincoln, Maine in 1825.

Lorenzo Cyrus Chase died September 17, 1912 at Lincoln, Maine.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

See another post which features the memorial card of Mertie Emma Chase of Atkinson, Maine, who died of consumption on 25 December 1895 at Milo, Maine. I didn't find a close relationship between Mertie's father Albert H. Chase and Esther's husband Lorenzo Cyrus Chase.

1895 Memorial Card: Mertie Emma Chase of Atkinson, Maine

Memorial card printed on the occasion of the death of young Mertie Emma Chase of consumption on December 25, 1895, "Aged 16 years, 3 months, 18 days".

Her parents would have grieved on any day, but Christmas must have been particularly hard.

From brief online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Mertie Emma Chase was born September 7, 1879 at Atkinson, Maine, the daughter of Albert H. and May M. (Farnham) Chase, who were born at Sebec, Maine, and Atkinson, Maine, respectively.  Mertie died at nearby Milo, Maine. Her mother died several years later; her father lived until 1936.

If you have corrections or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

This card was found with a similar one for Esther J. (Lancaster) Chase, but I didn't find a close relationship between Esther's husband Lorenzo Chase and Emma's father Albert H. Chase.
