1880-1884 Autograph Album of Nellie May Bowman of Lebanon Church, Virginia, before and after her Marriage to William Fletcher Frisbee

1880-1884 autograph album that was given as a Christmas gift to Nellie May Bowman (1858-1927) of Lebanon Church, Virginia.

In 1883 Nellie married William Fletcher Frisbee (1852-1925); a few of the later inscriptions were made after Nellie's marriage.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over thirty of Nellie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Surnames in the Album

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Nellie May Bowman was born 11 November 1858 in Virginia, the daughter of Jacob William Bowman (1833-1914) and Elizabeth (Tabler) Bowman, "Eliza" (1829-1911).  Nellie's mother inscribed a page in the album.

Also inscribing pages in the album were three of Nellie's siblings, brothers Samuel Edgar Bowman, Charles Lee Bowman and William Frank Bowman.  "Edgar" and "C. L.B" inscribed two pages each.

Edgar, presumably Samuel Edgar Bowman

C. L. B., presumably Charles Lee Bowman

Frank, age 12; William Franklin Bowman

In 1883, Nellie married William Fletcher Frisbee, an Illinois native, the son of Rufus K. Frisbee and Rebecca (Cornell) Frisbee. Nellie and William had at least one child, daughter Phrocine Bowman Frisbee, born in 1884.  The family moved to North Carolina at some point.

Nellie and William are buried in the Lebanon Church Cemetery at Lebanon Church, Virginia.

"Dec" or "Dee" left an interesting inscription.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Greeting Card Photograph of "Uncle Albert & Wife Alice Wakeman"; possibly Vermont Native Albert Renslow Wakeman & Alice Gertrude (Craun) Wakeman of Virginia

Photograph greeting card of 96 year old "Uncle Albert & his wife Alice Wakeman".  I'm presuming that Albert's surname was Wakeman, but it's possible that the writer gave Alice's maiden name.

Interestingly, I found an Albert Renslow Wakeman who lived to the age of 96.  He was born in 1868 at Jay, Vermont, son of Seth Bradley Wakeman and Cynthia Cornelia (Houghton) Bailey.  At the time of his death at the age of 96 in Virginia in 1965, Albert was married to his second wife, Alice Gertrude Craun.

Alice Gertrude, who was named as Gertie on Albert's death certificate, was born in 1894 in Virginia, daughter of Samuel Henry Craun and Fleta Blanch (Null) Craun.

Albert Renslow Wakeman is buried in the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery at Barton, Vermont, with his first wife Alice Leona (Bailey) Wakeman, who died in 1935.  Alice Gertrude (Craun) Wakeman died in May 1974, according to a Social Security record.

If you recognize Albert and Alice from your family photographs, and they are - or are not - the people in the photograph above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s Autograph Album of Susan E. Daly of Fresno, California

Autograph album with inscriptions acquired in the 1880s by Susan E. Daly, "Sue" or "Susie", of Fresno, California.

Susan wrote her name as Sue Daly on the lower right corner of the first end paper and as Susie Daly on the lower right corner of the title page, both shown below.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by nearly 5" and contains the sentiments of nearly 60 of Susan's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

A card tucked in the album has the names of the recipient Karol and the possible surname of the sender, Zalud.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Susan E. Daly was born about August 1865 in California, the daughter of Richard Henry Daly and Susan (Bedford) Daly.

Judge Daly was born in Virginia; records for Susan (Bedford) Daly give her birth state as South Carolina or Georgia.  The link below gives her birthplace as Augusta, Georgia.  Read more about the colorful character of Richard H. Daly here.

Two of Susan's brothers inscribed pages in her album.  James H. Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on May 23, 1881.

Susan's brother John Bedford Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on January 4, 1882.

Susan's sister Virginia (Daly) Smith, "Jennie", inscribed a page on September 28, but she didn't write a year.  Jennie's husband Albert F. Smith inscribed the left facing page.

I believe the album owner Susan was the Susan E. Daly who married widower Rev. John James Nathaniel Kenney on October 14, 1909 at Fresno, California.   I didn't find any children from Rev. Kenney's marriage to Susan, but he did have some children from his first marriage.

Both Susan and Rev. Kenney died in 1929.  They're buried in the Mountain View Cemetery at Fresno, California, with Daly and Kenney relatives.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship relationship [and there may have been others]

  • Mary B.  Susie's cousin.  Could she have been Mary Bedford?
  • Lily Bedford; inscribed at Anderson, no state written, [but there was a Lily Bedford at Anderson, California], on October 10, 1882.  Sue's cousin
  • Olive McCarley; "your loving Aunty"; inscribed at Shingletown, California, on September 28, 1882.  She was Olive Ann (Bedford) McCarley, sister of Susie's mother Susan E. (Bedford) Daly.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

  • Mary B.  Susie's cousin.  Could she have been Mary Bedford?
  • Leonora; possibly the Leonora Reynolds who inscribed another page.
  • Fannie Ashman, "your Hoosier friend", of Frankfort, Indiana; inscribed at Fresno, California, on October 15, 1887.  "The judge shall not be forgotten.  Oh, no, he is one of California's 'specimens'".  I'd love to know more about that story...

1888-1904 Autograph Album of Harvey Elliott Mayberry or Mabry of Dugspur, Virginia

1888-1904 autograph album that belonged to Harvey Elliott Mayberry, "Elliott", of Dugspur, Virginia.
Several inscribers wrote Elliott's surname as Maberry, and one who called herself Elliott's cousin wrote her name as Ella Mabry, which appears to have been spelling that Elliott's father used.  Elliott's gravestone, however, is etched Mayberry.

Elliott inscribed the dedication page.

Surnames in the Album:
  • Booker  (2)
  • Dehaven
  • Gardner  (3)
  • Goad
  • Hylton
  • Mabry or Mayberry (2)
  • Martin
  • Meredith  (2)
  • Semones  (3)
  • Simpkins  (2)
  • Smith
  • Vaughn

Two of the pages include gem-sized photographs, one of them presumably inscribed by Elliott's first wife Susan (Simpkins) Mabry in 1890, with photographs of herself and Elliott.  Susan died in 1904.

The album measures approximately 6" by 4" and is partially disbound.  It contains the sentiments of 25 of Elliott's relatives and friends, three photographs and a newspaper clipping of the poem "Love Song of the Future".  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to information on his gravestone, Harvey Elliott Mayberry was born 3 September 1866 and died December 3, 1953 (indexed as December 4 on the Find a Grave memorial).  His parents were Greenberry Mabry and Mary Louisa (Sutphin) Mabry.

Eliott married Sue Simpkins, daughter of Calvin Simpkins and Elizabeth (Wilson, I think) on  March 4, 1889 in Pulaski County, Virginia.  Sue inscribed a page in the album before their marriage, with her residence given as Snowville, Virginia, and, as noted above, may have been the inscriber of the page with the two photographs, shown just above.

Before Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry died in 1904, she and Elliott had at least two children, son Oscar who died in infancy in 1892 and son Fred, born in 1894.

Inscriber Delia Simpkins seemed to be referring to a death, perhaps that of Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry.

On December 4, 1904, Elliott married Emma Florence Yearout, daughter of Jacob Yearout and Nancy (Lawrence) Yearout.  Emma was born, according to her gravestone, on August 27, 1879.  A Virginia Births and Christenings record shows August 10, 1880; although it's indexed as a birth, perhaps it was the date of her christening.

Elliott and Emma had at least three children, daughters Bettie, Ethel and Ora.

Harvey Elliott Mayberry and his wives Sue (Simpkins) Mayberry and Emma Florence (Yearout) Mayberry are buried in the Simpkinstown Cemetery at Simpkinstown, Virginia.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The other person who affixed a photograph to her page was Sarah V. Booker.

  • Friend
  • Your cousin, M. M., inscribed at Star, Virginia, in December 1888
  • Page inscribed "Dear Aunt Necy"
  • "true friend and companion"; inscribed on Christmas day 1904.  Perhaps inscribed by Elliott's second wife Emma Florence (Yearout) Mabry shortly after their marriage of December 4, 1904
  • "Your devoted companion", inscribed on March 1, 1890.  Gem sized photographs of a woman and a man pasted on the page.  Could the page have been inscribed by Elliott's first wife Sue (Simpkins) Mabry, and the photographs that of herself and Elliott?
  • M. Ellen Booker of Round Peak, North Carolina
  • Sarah V. Booker; she pasted her gem-sized photograph on the page.
  • Laura E. Dehaven; inscribed on January 24, 1889.  Not sure of surname

Early 1900s Photograph of Elva Leonard of Brockton, Massachusetts; Future Wife of John Samuel Kemp

Early 1900s photograph of Elva Leonard of Brockton, Massachusetts.  She would marry John Samuel Kemp of Virginia.

Perhaps a school photograph, the matted piece is approximately 3-1/4" by 2-1/4" and was found with similar sized photographs of youngsters and young adults from Brockton and towns near it, such as Randolph and Braintree.

Note that the identification on the reverse mentions W.G.S., presumably a grammar school at Brockton, and Brockton High School.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Elva Leonard was born October 11, 1889 at Brockton, Massachusetts, although I haven't yet found a record of her birth.  She was the daughter of Benjamin Clifford Leonard and Lucy Frances (Manley) Leonard.  Elva married John Samuel Kemp, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Kibler) Kemp of Virginia; again, I haven't found a record of this, though Elva is mentioned as John's wife on his 1918 draft registration card.  John was a clerk at the U. S. Treasury at Washington, D.C.

The couple lived in Virginia, for many years at Arlington, and had, I believe, at least four children.  Elva died in 1953, and John in 1961.  They're buried at the Columbia Gardens Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia.

If you have corrections and/or information to share, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

c1886 Cabinet Photograph of Mary Ann (Chesney) Baker of Maryland, Illinois & Iowa; wife of Rev. Jacob Baker.

Note of February 6, 2017:  Make sure to check the comments section for family information provided by a descendant.

Circa 1886 cabinet photograph of a woman identified on the reverse as Mary Ann (Chesney) Baker, wife of Rev. Jacob Baker.  She was born in Maryland but was living in Iowa at the time of the photograph.

This photograph is owned by friend Bernadette, who relayed it to me in the hopes of reuniting it with family.

The reverse of the photograph is a family historian's dream, though there are a few discrepancies from the information found online.

Transcript

Mrs. Mary Ann Chesney - Baker wife of Rev. Jacob Baker, born at Havre de Grace, Md. From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Some online references have Mary Ann (Chesney) Baker's birth date as February 2, 1812, but the date on the photograph and the Iowa Cemetery Records agree on the date of February 1, 1812.  Whether Mary Ann's mother's maiden name was Mitchel or Mitchell, I'm not sure, as most references have it as Mitchell.  From what I've been able to determine, the other children of Thomas and Hannah (Mitchel or Mitchell) Chesney were:
  1. Kent Mitchell Chesney (1809-1892) - "Kent"
  2. John Edward Chesney (1815-1901) - "Jno E."
  3. James Benjamin Franklin Chesney (1818-1894) - "Franklin"

On December 16, 1829 at Brownsville, Indiana, Mary Ann married Jacob Baker, son of George and Elizabeth (Shriver) Baker.  Jacob was born January 16, 1806 in Washington County Virginia.  He and Mary Ann lived in Indiana and Illinois before, about 1853, pursuing a claim on 160 acres near Sidney, Iowa, in Fremont County, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Their children:  please let me know if I've missed one
  1. Orlando Harrison Baker (1830-1913) - "O. H."
  2. George E. Baker (1832-1874) - "Geo. E."
  3. John Franklin Baker (1837-?) - "Jno. F."
  4. Mary Candace Baker (1840-1916) - "Mary C." - See the comments section for more information on Mary and her descendants
  5. Henry Chesney Baker (1843-1917) - "H. C."
  6. Erasmus Richard Baker (1846-1916) - "E. R."
  7. Wilbur Fiske Baker (1849-1935) - "W. F."
  8. Samuel Schwartz Baker (1855-1914) - "S. S."
Read an account of the family's trek from Illinois to Iowa in 1853 here.

If the dates listed on the Find-a-Grave index are correct, Rev. Jacob Baker and wife Mary Ann (Chesney) Baker died within a day of each other in early March 1894.  They're buried in the Parsley Cemetery at Sidney, Iowa, as is their son Erasmus Richard Baker.

1840-1877 Autograph Album of Sarah Ann Cross of Somerton, Virginia, now Suffolk, Virginia

1840-1877 autograph album of Sarah Ann Cross of Somerton, Virginia, which is now Suffolk, Virginia, with inscribers from Virginia and North Carolina.  Pages were dedicated to Sarah and her nicknames: "Sallie" and "S'lan".  Common surnames among the inscribers:  Brinkley, Cross, Edwards, Ivey and Smith.  Sadly, many inscribers left only given names or initials.

The album was presented to her in 1840 by her brother William H. Cross, whose middle name I found as either Hurley or Hardy.

The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6" and contains the sentiments of 80 or more of Sarah's relatives, including many cousins, and friends, a few of may have inscribed more than one page.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.  As noted above, many inscribers had to be assigned to the "unknown surname" category.

Tucked in the album are three scraps: 1) a photograph of missionary Ann Hasseltine Judson, wife of Adoniram Judson; 2) a long clipping containing the transcript of a letter from General Taylor, presumably Zachary Taylor; and a newspaper clipping that mentions the dental services of M. F. Daughtrey, who I believe to have been a relative or in-law of the Cross family.

The album was published by J. C. Riker of New York and contains several hand-colored engravings interspersed throughout.   Although the album is in groups of unbound sections, and some pages may be lost, only the title page suffered appears to have suffered water damage.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Sarah Ann Cross was born March 31, 1819 in Nansemond County, Virginia, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Copeland) Cross.  Other than brother William, Sarah had two siblings, James Augustus Hardy Cross and Mary Elizabeth Cross.  There were several inscribers named Mary, and there was one whose name appeared to be Mrs. James A. Cross.   A reader familiar with the family history of Nansemond County, however, may be able to identify more family members and will hopefully leave a comment.

On February 17, 1868, Sarah became the second wife of Jesse Eason, son of Solomon and Avis (Riddick) Eason.  Jesse had had five children with his previous wife Mary (Riddick) Eason, whose death date I haven't yet found.  One page in the album was inscribed by a J. R. Eason, whom I believe to be Jesse's son Joseph Riddick Eason.

Jesse died in 1885 and Sarah in 1889.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
