Two 19th Century Autograph Albums from the Family of Rev. Ephraim Hapgood of Bryantville, Massachusetts

Two autograph albums that appear to have been started by Catherine (Hadley) Hapgood (1852-1936), Kate", of Bryantville, Massachusetts, wife of Rev. Ephraim Hapgood, and turned over to her daughter Marion Hadley Hapgood (1876-1951), "Mamie", who would marry Emery William Clark (1870-1923).

See another post that features the autograph album of Henrietta Mary Clark (1875-1981), "Etta", who married Andrew Jacob W. Torsleff (1864-1953).  Etta was a sister to Emery W. Clark.

Several inscriptions in the albums were written in Nebraska.  Rev. Hapgood, with his wife and two young children, moved to a pastorate in Seward, Nebraska, in 1878. He later took on a pastorate at David City, Nebraska. The family subsequently returned to the East, when Rev. Hapgood became a pastor in South Hanson, Massachusetts.

Inscriptions in the album shown at top run from 1879 to 1881.  This album has Marion's name on the ownership page and the date of 1879, but Marion herself would have been too young to have penned the inscription, so it's presumed that Kate wrote it for her daughter.  Some of the earlier inscriptions in the album were sentiments directed to Mamie when she was very young.

Many inscribers wrote sentiments in both albums.  Alphabetical lists of both albums appear
at the end of this post.

The album shown above measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 40 relatives, friends and schoolmates.  The companion album, shown below, which measures a bit larger than 7" by 4", has over 30 sentiments, inscribed from 1881 to 1890.

More information on the Hapgood family of Massachusetts and beyond can be found in The Hapgood Family, Descendants of Shadrach, 1656-1898, the new edition edited by Warren Hapgood of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1898.

Rev. Ephraim Hapgood's mother, Mary Ann (Hosmer) Hapgood (1806 [or 1808]-1890) inscribed pages in each album, one in 1885 at South Hanson, Massachusetts.  She was the widow of John Hapgood (1802-1867).

Among the inscribers was Clarissa Hosmer (Hapgood) Nash, "Clara", a sister to Rev. Ephraim Hapgood, and thus Marion's aunt.  According to the book above, Clara was the first woman admitted to the bar in New England.

1857-1861 Autograph Album of Lucy Richmond Weston (1841-1925) of Georgetown, Massachusetts + Her Added Notes

1857-1861 autograph album of Lucy Richmond Weston (1841-1925) of Georgetown, Massachusetts, with her added notations of marriages and deaths.

The "Forget Me Not" album was printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by John B. Perry.

The inscriptions appear to have been collected while Lucy was a student at Topsfield Academy at Topsfield, Massachusetts, and include those of classmates, teachers, and principal Rev. Albert Ira Dutton and wife.  Phillips Brooks also inscribed a page.

The album is missing its covers and end papers, on one of which Lucy might have written her name.  Her identity was teased out by the various inscriptions to "Miss Lucy" and the inscription of her maternal grandmother, Irene (Mighill) Spofford.

The interior measures approximately 8" by 6-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 120 of Lucy's relatives, friends, schoolmates, teachers and pastors.  It also contains several pages of engravings interspersed throughout.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered and any notes that Lucy added, appears at the end of this post.

Lucy Richmond Weston (1841-1925) was born 26 September 1841 at Georgetown, Massachusetts, the daughter of Orin Weston (1798-1871) and Lavinia (Spofford) Weston (1799-1894).  On 22 August 1866, Lucy married minister William Moore Gay (1830-1906).

Lucy's maternal grandmother Irene Mighill Spofford, "your Agd Granmother", inscribed a page in the album.  Lucy noted her death: "Died 1865 - March 25".  Irene (Mighill) Spofford (1774-1865) and her husband Dr. Moses Dole Spofford (1773-1832) were the parents of Lucy's mother Lavinia (Spofford) Weston (1799-1894).

Several other people with the surname Spofford and Weston inscribed pages in the album.  See the list of inscribers, below, for more information.

1883-1886 Autograph Album from West Gardiner, Maine

1883-1886 autograph album with inscribers mostly from West Gardiner, Maine, and most appearing to have been born in the late 1860s and early 1870s.

The album, which is missing its covers, measures approximately 5" by nearly 3", contains the sentiments of 22 of the owner's friends and possibly relatives.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers and any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

It's possible the owner was Harry B. Hinkley of West Gardiner, Maine, who inscribed the first two pages.  He was presumably Harry B. Hinkley (1869-1937), who married Alice M. Brackett (1883-1956).

An Alice M. Brackett made an undated inscription in the album but her age would have made this outside of the otherwise 1883-1886 range of inscriber dates. However, if the album belonged to Harry B. Hinkley, Alice might have found it at a later time and inscribed in it then.  Or inscriber Alice might have been Alice Maud (Brackett) Spear (1873-1959), who married Charles Orlo Spear (1871-1945).
