1874 Two CDVs by a Milford, Massachusetts Studio: Miss Martha M. Ring of Milford; Miss Annie Slade of Bristol, Rhode Island

Two CDVs taken in 1874 by the Willis studio of 100 Main Street, Milford, Massachusetts. The two young women appear related, but may have just been friends.

Above and just below, the CDV of Miss Martha M. Ring of Milford, Massachusetts; taken in June 1874.  I believe she was the Martha M. Ring born about 1852, daughter of Winthrop H. Ring and Lydia R. (Johnson) Ring, who would marry Civil War veteran George R. Bakemen. This Martha died in 1920.

Above and below, the CDV of Miss Annie Slade of Bristol, Rhode Island; taken on June 24, 1874.  Annie may have been the daughter of John R. Slade and his first wife Harriet (Paine) Slade.

These women were both teachers, I believe. Martha attended Bridgewater Normal School, and Annie may have attended Rhode Island Normal School.

If you have information on either of these women, especially if you can tie them together, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1874-1883 Autograph Album of Louise M. Williams; presumably Louise Miller Williams of Bristol, Rhode Island

Autograph album of Louise M. Williams, dated December 25, 1874, presumably a Christmas present. I believe she was Louise Miller Williams (1865-1901), then of Bristol, Rhode Island.

The album is a petite one, measuring a bit less than 3-1/2 by 2-1/2, and contains the sentiments of ten people, at least three of whom appear to relatives.  A surname list appears below and an alphabetical list of the inscribers and any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - your corrections and additions requested:

I believe the album owner was Louise Miller Williams, daughter of Fielding Lewis Williams and Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams of Bristol, Rhode Island.  Louise was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 8, 1865.  I believe the A. L. Williams who inscribed a page was Louise mother, Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams.

Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams was the daughter of Augustus Nelson Miller and Harriet Jones (Waldron) Miller.  It's possible that the H. L. Williams who inscribed a page was Harriet Jones (Waldron) Miller, mother of Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams and maternal grandmother of album owner Louise.

The next inscription was that of A. P. Waldron, who may have been Annie P. Waldron, presumably related to Harriet Jones (Waldron) Miller.

Louise Miller Williams married John Taylor Lewis in 1898; sadly she died in 1901, after having had one child, son John Taylor Lewis in 1900.  She's buried in the Juniper Hill Cemetery at Bristol, Rhode Island.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, and if you can decode any of the initials of the inscribers, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Perhaps a reader can decode the place in the inscription written partially by James Armstrong and partially by, I presume, one of his parents.  Patapsco ? - short for Institute?  There was a Patapsco Female Institute, and perhaps James was the son of one of the instructors.

Inscribers in the Album
  • James Armstrong; inscribed on November 23, 1880 at Patapsco ?, Baltimore, Maryland
  • G. W. Bowen of Brooklyn, New York; inscribed on July 12, 1875
  • Archie McL. Hawks of Bristol, Rhode Island; inscribed on August 13, 1880; possibly Archie McLean Hawks (1865-1963)
  • W. H. Howell; inscribed on July 12, 1875
  • H. J. Miller; inscribed on May 6, 1878; possibly Louise's maternal grandmother, Harriet Jones (Waldron) Miller, wife of Augustus Nelson Miller
  • Fanny W. Morse of Bristol, Rhode Island; presumably the Fannie W. Morse who gave her occupation as teacher in the 1880 Census of Bristol, Rhode Island
  • Nettie R. North of Bristol, Rhode Island; inscribed on September 6, 1883 - "Royal Frock". Presumably Antoinette Richards North (1863-1921) who would marry William Russell Bogert
  • Ricardo H. Smith of Bristol, Rhode Island; inscribed on August 15, 1880. Presumably Ricardo deBelleville Smith (1864-1924)
  • A. P. Waldron; inscribed on July 14, 1875; perhaps Annie P. Waldron; presumably related to Louise through family of Louise's maternal grandmother Harriet Jones (Waldron) Miller.
  • Louise M. Williams, album owner; presumably given the album as a Christmas present in 1874; presumably Louise Miller Williams (1865-1901), daughter of Fielding Lewis Williams and Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams of Bristol, Rhode Island and future wife of John T. Lewis
  • A. L. Williams; inscribed at Bristol, Rhode Island, on July 14, 1875; possibly Abbie Louisa (Miller) Williams, mother of Louise Miller Williams

1881-1886 Autograph Album of John Volan Johnson of Wellfleet, Massachusetts; Student at Scholfield's Commercial College at Providence, Rhode Island

Autograph album that was presented to John Volan Johnson of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, as a birthday gift on May 27, 1881, by Amelia and Nellie.  The autographs continue until 1886, during a portion of which time the owner was a student at Scholfield's Commercial College at Providence, Rhode Island.

The album has a handmade cover with the initials J. V. J. on the reverse.

The album itself measures approximately 7-1/2" by 4-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 20 of John Volan Johnson's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teacher(s).  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Surnames in the Album

Angell (2)          Providence, Rhode Island
Bailey                No residence mentioned
Johnson (6)        Wellfleet, Massachusetts - 5; Providence, Rhode Island - 1
Lewis                 Providence, Rhode Island
Mason                Riverdale, New York, but inscribed at Providence, Rhode Island, perhaps at Scholfield's

Ryan                   Providence, Rhode Island
Tucker                Providence, Rhode Island
Walker  (3)         Boston, Massachusetts - 1; Taunton, Massachusetts - 1; one gave no residence

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and/or additions requested:

I believe the album owner was John Volan Johnson, who perhaps went by the name "Volan", judging from the inscription of Amelia and Nellie.  Volan was the son of Dr. John Gore Johnson and Sally Rich (Walker) Johnson of Wellfleet, Massachusetts.    Among Volan's relatives who inscribed pages were:
  • J. G. Johnson, M.D. of Wellfleet, Massachusetts; presumably Volan's father John Gore Johnson; see image below.
  • Volney P. Johnson of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Volan's brother Volney Pliny Johnson
  • Gertrude A. Johnson; she was Gertrude Arethena (Budlong) Johnson, wife of Volan's brother Volney Pliny Johnson.

  • Volana A. Johnson, Volan's sister Volana Amora Johnson
  • Elton D. Walker of Taunton, Massachusetts; Volan's cousin

  • Aunt Ruth; presumably Ruth Barrows (Cobb) Walker, mother of Elton D. Walker and Granville J. Walker and wife of Benjamin D. Walker, who was a brother to Sally Rich (Walker) Johnson, Volan's mother.

J. G. Johnson M.D. of Wellfleet, Massachusetts; inscribed on September 7, 1881; presumably Volan's father John Gore Johnson, M.D.

If you have corrections to the above information and/or further information on John Volan Johnson and his family, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1861+ Autograph Album of Aravesta Hawes Pillsbury, Maine Native; Student at Dean Academy at Franklin, Massachusetts

Autograph album that belonged to Aravesta Hawes Pillsbury, "Vessie", of Franklin, Massachusetts, a student at Dean Academy there.  Dean Academy, founded in 1865, is now Dean College.  Vessie was a native of Union, Maine.

Vessie added notes to several of the inscriptions, indicating marriages or deaths.  Inscriptions are dated mostly in the 1870s, with additions by Vessie up to the 1942.

Vessie was given the album by her younger half-brother John C. Pillsbury.  "Vessie H. Pillsbury, Franklin, Mass, A present from Brother Johnnie."

The earliest inscription, by Vessie's cousin Mary Frank Smith of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, appears to be dated 1861, but that would be a decade earlier than most of the inscriptions.  I wonder if the inscriber meant 1871.  As you can see, Vessie noted Mary's death on January 5, 1926.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 4-3/4" and contains the sentiments of over 100 of Vessie's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teachers.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Aravesta Hawes Pillsbury, "Vessie", was born at Union, Maine, I think on December 13, 1859, the daughter of David Green Pillsbury and Aravesta Matilda (Hawes) Pillsbury.  Sadly, Vessie's mother died the following day.  Vessie's father later married Hannah Walcott, mother of Vessie's half brother John C. Pillsbury.

The H. W. Pillsbury who inscribed a page at Union, Maine, was presumably Hannah (Walcott) Pillsbury, Vessie's stepmother.

Vessie's maternal grandmother, Alzina (Walcott) Hawes of Franklin, Massachusetts, a native of Maine, inscribed a page in the album.  Vessie added a note that her grandmother died at Attleboro, Massachusetts, on April 8, 1891.

Many other relatives in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island inscribed pages in the album, including, presumably, some who did not express their kinship.

On October 7, 1884 at Franklin, Massachusetts, Vessie married Arthur Henry Paul, son of inventor Seth D. Paul and Elizabeth (West) Paul.  Arthur was born December 9, 1856 at Waltham, Massachusetts.  At the time of their marriage, Arthur was working as a grocer at Woonsocket, Rhode, Island, and Vessie was teaching at Franklin, Massachusetts.

The A.P. who inscribed a page was presumably Arthur Henry Paul, as Vessie's notation of his death date, corresponds to Arthur's death date of August 19, 1921.  By the time Arthur died, according to his death certificate, the couple had been living at Saco, Maine, for about three weeks.

I didn't find a record of children for Vessie and Arthur.  Vessie died in 1946.  She and Arthur are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Attleboro, Massachusetts.  If you have corrections to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Autograph album with inscriptions from 1891 that belonged to Alice Marshall, presumably of Providence, Rhode Island, in the Class of 1891.  I believe this was the Class of 1891 at Providence High School, but one inscriber mentioned C.S.C.

The album, overstuffed and diamond-shaped, measures approximately 5-1/2" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 45 of Alice's friends and classmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Alice Marshall may have been Alice Mitchell Marshall, born November 7, 1877 in Rhode Island, the daughter of Andrew and Eliza Marshall.  This Alice married Hugh Albert Walker on May 27, 1902.  The couple had at least two children before Alice's untimely death in 1910.  She's buried in the Pocasset Cemetery at Cranston, Rhode Island.

If you have corrections to the information above, if you feel that Alice Marshall was a different person, or if you have information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Elizabeth Jane Mitchaem, "Lizzie", was born, according to a Rhode Island birth record, on April 2, 1875, but her Find-a-Grave memorial gives her birth date as April 1, 1876.  Her parents were Joseph Mitchaem, a native of England, and Catherine (Whalen) Mitchaem, a native of Nova Scotia, according to Census information.

Four of Lizzie's siblings inscribed pages in her album:  brothers George W. Mitchaem; William Mitchaem and Charles A. Mitchaem, as well as Lizzie's married sister, Ellen S. (Mitchaem) Butman, "Nellie", who was then living with her husband Royal O. Butman at Worcester, Massachusetts.

Several members of the Powley family of Monroeville, Ohio, inscribed pages in the album, father William D. Powley, postmaster at Monroeville, and sons Clarence Le Pla Powley; Clinton Henry Powley; and George S. Powley.  George included a stamp photograph. on the page he inscribed while at Providence, Rhode Island, on June 24, 1892.
