c1843-1845 Autograph Album of Catherine of Rhinebeck, New York area; possibly Catherine (Cramer) Hill (1823-1913)

Autograph album that belonged to a Catherine, presumably from the Rhinebeck, New York area, as that is the only place mentioned.

The album contains the calling card of Mrs. Edwin Hill.  Interestingly, an Edwin Hill (1820-1905) lived his adult life in Rhinebeck, New York; even more interestingly, his wife was Catherine (Cramer) Hill (1823-1913).  This Catherine may have been the album's owner.

Catherine (Cramer) Hill was the daughter of Jacob Wendell Cramer and Clarissa (possibly Kip) Cramer.  Interestingly, Catherine's brother Charles I. Cramer (1812-1893) married Eveanna Van Steenburgh (1821-1917), who is presumably the Eveanna who inscribed a page in Catherine's album.

The album, which measures approximately 7-3/4 by 6", was printed by J. C. Riker of New York.

In addition to the eight inscriptions are four hand colored engravings of flowers.

Only two of the inscribers and the calling card reveal a surname, but I was able to tease out what I believe is the surname of a third.  Those surnames are:
  • Champlin
  • Cramer (inferred)
  • Hill
  • Hoff or Huff

If the owner of the album was not Catherine (Cramer) Hill, multiple other Catherines lived in Rhinebeck during the appropriate era.  If you feel that the owner was Catherine (Cramer) Hill or if you can tease out another identity for her or any of the inscribers, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

G. V. H.; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York, on February 10, 1845 [not sure of initials]

Owner/Inscribers in the Album
  • Catherine; autograph album owner, presumably of Rhinebeck, New York.  Possibly Catherine (Cramer) Hill (1823-1913), christened May 20, 1823 at Rhinebeck, New York; daughter of Jacob W. Cramer and Clarissa (Yip) Cramer; wife of Edwin Hill (1820-1905)
  • Frances; inscribed a two-page sentiment at Rhinebeck, New York, on May 20, 1843
  • Eveanna; inscribed a 2-page sentiment on May 25, 1843.  Presumably Eveanna Cramer (1821-1917)
  • Mary; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York on August 3, 1843
  • Martha C; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York on June 26; no year written but presumably in the 1840s
  • M. C.; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York, on August 6th;no year written, but presumably in the 1840s
  • F. E. Champlin, or F. C. Champlin; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York, on August 3, 1843.  Perhaps Ellis Frances Champlin (1821-1879), "Alice", who would marry Ephraim Barringer
  • Eveanna; inscribed a 2-page sentiment on May 25, 1843.  Presumably Eveanna (Van Steenburgh) Cramer (1821-1917), wife of Charles I. Cramer
  • G. V. H.; inscribed at Rhinebeck, New York, on February 10, 1845. Not sure of initials
  • Mrs. Edwin Hill - her calling card.  Interestingly, Edwin Hill's wife was Catherine (Cramer) Hill (1821-1913); she may have been the owner of the autograph album.
  • Sarah Hoff or Sarah Huff; inscribed a 2-page sentiment

1880s to 1940 Autograph Album, originally owned by Helen Jane (Stuart) Travis of Machiasport, Maine

1880s to 1940 album originally owned by Helen Jane (Stuart) Travis (1850-1937) of Machiasport, Maine; presented to her by her Sunday School class.

The album was used throughout Helen's life, it appears, and even beyond, perhaps by one of her children.

The album measures approximately  7-3/4" by 5" and contains the sentiments of over 70 of Helen's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list appears just below, and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Helen Jane Stuart was born April 27, 1850 at Machiasport, Maine, the daughter of James Stuart, Jr., and Abigail T. (Gardner) Stuart.  Ida's brother Frank L. Stuart inscribed a page in her album, as did an Ida M. Stuart, who was presumably Helen's sister Ida May Stuart.

Frank L. Stuart of Machiasport, Maine; inscribed on July 12, 1885; presumably Helen's brother

One of the inscribers on this shared page was Ida M. Stuart, presumably Helen's sister.

About 1875, Helen Jane Stuart married Thomas William Travis (1851-1930), son of Caleb E. Travis and Mary L. (Higgins) Travis, also of Machiasport, Maine.  Thomas was presumably the T. W. Harris who inscribed a page in the album in 1883.

Other relatives of the Stuart and Travis families inscribed pages; refer to the list of inscribers below.  Thomas and Helen had several children, at least one of whom inscribed a page in the album.

James I. Travis of Machiasport, Maine; inscribed on January 19, 1890 [not sure of last digit]. James Irving Travis, son of album owner Helen J. (Stuart) Travis and Thomas William Travis

Thomas William Travis died in 1930 and widow Helen Jane (Stuart) Travis in 1937.  They're buried in the Church Hill Cemetery in Machiasport, Maine.

1890-1892 Autograph Album of Bertha Delight Beckwith of Woodlawn, Nova Scotia; Served as a Physician in WWI in France; Actress in New York City

1890s autograph album of Bertha Delight Beckwith (1876-1967) of Woodlawn, Nova Scotia.

Bertha or someone else wrote her name on the title page.  H. S. Barteau of Berwick, presumably Berwick, Nova Scotia, inscribed the inside cover, left in the image below.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of 25 of Bertha's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list appears below, and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Bertha Alma Beckwith was born at Woodlawn, Nova Scotia, on April 19, 1875,  daughter of Samuel Hustis Vincent Beckwith, "Lester", and Jemima (Saunders) Beckwith.  I'm not sure when Bertha's middle name became Delight.

According to an articles transcribed here and here, Bertha moved to Saint John, New Brunswick for educational purposes, then to Boston, where she worked as a reporter, and then to New York University to study medicine.  She started as a nurse, became a physician and served in France during World War I.  After she returned to New York, reportedly at least partly due to the pushback she got as a woman doctor, she gave up medicine and became an actress.  Whether she returned to medicine or not, I don't know.

Bertha died at New York City on August 20, 1967; her stone gives her birth year as 1876.  She's buried with her parents and other relatives in the Burlington Cemetery at Burlington, Nova Scotia.

If you have corrections and/additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Interestingly, no one mentioned their province when giving their residence.  I'm assuming that all of the place names given are located in Nova Scotia.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Albertina Theresa Morgan [the name on her birth record] was born August 25, 1849 at Dexter, Maine, the daughter of John Morgan and Phebe (Burton) Morgan.  In 1883, Albertina married John H. Lane (1846-1912), son of Jeremiah B. Lane and Mary Ann (Lane) Lane.  Albertina's mother had passed away by the time of the album, but her mother-in-law, Mary Ann (Lane) Lane is presumably the Mary A. Lane of Ripley, Maine, who inscribed the page shown below.

Other relatives who inscribed pages were Albertina's siblings, at least one cousin and in-laws.  Those who expressed a relationship:
  • John H. Lane, who inscribed a two page sentiment before their marriage
  • Mamie Marie Lane, daughter of Albertina Theresa (Morgan) Lane and John H. Lane
  • John's sisters Lydia, Malvena and Mamie
  • Mamie L. Lane inscribed several pages; she was the sister of Albertina's husband John H. Lane
  • Albertina's brothers Edgar P. Morgan; George Weston Morgan and William Henry Harrison Morgan
  • Albertina's cousin Adelaide (McKenney) Snell, wife of Bradford Snell of Brockton, Massachusetts

John H. Lane of Ripley, Maine; inscribed facing pages on January 19, 1882, the year before he married album owner Albertina Teresa Morgan (1849-1939)

Mamie Marie Lane of Ripley, Maine; inscribed on December 20, at age 12; daughter of Albertina Theresa (Morgan) Lane and John H. Lane

John H. Lane died in 1912 and Albertina in 1939.  They're buried in the Elmwood Cemetery at Dexter, Maine.

1853 Autograph Album of James S. Pegg of Bloomingsport, Indiana; Student at Friends Boarding School at Richmond, Indiana

Autograph album started in 1853 by James S. Pegg of Bloomingsport, Indiana, a student at Friends Boarding School in Richmond, Indiana.  Friends Boarding School, established in 1847, changed its name to Earlham College in 1859.

Perhaps Bloomingsport is place now known as Bloomingport, Indiana.

The homemade album measures approximately 6-1/2" by 4" and is missing its back cover and perhaps one or more inscribed pages.  An alphabetical surname list appears below and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

James S. Pegg was born April 24, 1836, or April 24, 1837, in Indiana, the son of David and Jane (possibly Sanders) Pegg.  I found Quaker records for each birth year.  Both parents had connections to North Carolina; read more on the migration of Quakers from North Carolina to Indiana here.

James S. Pegg is buried in the New Garden Friends Cemetery in Wayne County, Indiana, with his parents and sister.  I don't know if this particular James S. Pegg ever married or had children.  Hopefully a reader will share information in the comments.
