1878-1880s Autograph Album of Edward Haas of Buffalo, New York Area

1878-1880s album of Edward Haas of the Buffalo, New York, area.  Edward wrote his name on the reverse of the first end paper.

The album measures approximately 4-1/4" by 3" and contains the sentiments of 14 of Edward's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

The first inscription was made by Martin Sattler in German, inscribed at Buffalo, New York, on July 24, 1878.

Two of the inscribers indicated they were Edward's sisters.   Minnie inscribed her page in January 1880.  Maria inscribed a page on July 24, 1878.

From brief online research, I found at least two young men named Edward Haas at Buffalo, New York, in that time frame, one born in New York and one in Germany.

Among the siblings of Edward J. Haas, born in New York in 1868, were Marie and Wilhelmina, perhaps inscribers Maria and "Minnie".  Their parents were David and Maria Barbara Haas.

Edward J. Haas married Rose Margaret Pond in 1893 and had several children with her, but it appears that most of them died young.  Edward himself died relatively young, in 1912, and is buried in the Saint John Cemetery at Cheektowaga, New York.

Hopefully a reader will weigh in with more information.

4 Photographs of the Prasse and Stache Families of the Manchester, New Hampshire Area

4 cabinet photographs from the Prasse (Prass) and Stache families of the Manchester, New Hampshire, area.  As far as I can tell, the people in the photographs were all born in Germany and emigrated to New Hampshire.
  • Reinhold Stache, shown above; photograph by the Piper studio of 864 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire; presumably Reinhold Traugott Stache (1878-1913).  Reinhold was the first husband of Amelia Prasse, whom he married at Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1902.
  • Amelia Prasse; by the Piper studio of Manchester, New Hampshire.  Amelia C. Stache (1880-1967) married Reinhold Traugott Stache in 1902.  After Reinhold's death in 1913, Amelia married Wilhelm Heinrich Bernard Hesseling in 1915.
  • Martha Prasse, sister of Amelia Prasse; by the Piper studio of 864 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire.  Martha Prasse (abt 1877-?) married Albert Maiwald in 1900.  After Albert's death in 1901, Martha married Oscar Kleiner in 1909.
  • Rudolf Prasse; brother of Amelia Prasse and Martha Prasse; by Shaw's Studio of 895 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire.  Rudolf Reinhold Prasse (1872-1972) married Mrs. Martha (Hampel) Solger in 1914 at Manchester, New Hampshire.

37 1890s-1940s Photographs of Related People, many from Kansas and Illinois: Lindahl, Jaderborg, Hays, Gundy, Nothstein, Paulson, etc.

37 photographs, from about the 1890s to the mid 20th century, of people from Illinois,  Kansas, Arkansas, and other Midwest and Western states, including several of the Lindahl and Jadersborg families of Lindsborg, Kansas.

Most of the surnames are Scandinavian and German in origin.  Interestingly, a Lindsborg, Kansas, website indicates that Lindsborg is "Little Sweden, USA".

The woman in the photograph above is Antonia Christina Teichgraeber (1887-1964), daughter of Ernest Theodore Teichgraeber and Emma (Hartwig) Teichgraeber.  The surname is also seen as Teichgraber.  The "Helen L." mentioned in the identification was Helen Theodora (Teichgraeber) Lindahl, wife of Samuel August Lindahl and daughter of Antonia's uncle Emil John Teichgraeber and wife Ida Sophia (Johnson) Teichgraeber.

Another photograph shows two young women: Edna Soderstrom of Hoisington, Kansas, and Lydia Jaderborg, presumably of Lindsborg, Kansas.  Interestingly, Lydia J. (Jaderborg) Blomgren, wife of Dr. Carl Blomgren, is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery at Stonington, Maine, which fact might account for how the photographs ended up at an antique mall in the same Maine county, where I purchased them in 2005.

Still another photograph, taken in 1913 by the Martin studio of Chicago, Illinois, shows Rev. Otto Karlstrom and his wife and children.

If you recognize any of the names in the photographs, or if you have corrections to my spelling, please leave a comment - being careful to respect the privacy of living people - or contact me directly.

1869-1871 Autograph Album of Henry Rothert of Baltimore, Maryland; Many Pages Inscribed in German

Unusually large autograph album presented to Henry Rothert by his mother, presumably in 1869.  Henry was a student at Baltimore, Maryland, and collected autographs between 1869 and 1871.

I believe the album owner was Henry H. Rothert, born about March 1855 in Maryland to German immigrant parents, but I invite readers' confirmation or alternate theories.  That Henry, a carpenter, married Olga Seiler in 1899 or 1900.  See an image of Henry's house at 4251 Nicholas Avenue in Baltimore.

Note of September 12, 2015:  See the comments section for an alternate theory of Henry's identity and for information on other inscribers.

Many of the pages are inscribed in German.  A genealogist in Germany helped me with identifying names and relationships, but the handwriting was difficult to interpret in places, so other sets of eyes would be helpful. Some readers may be able to decode the initials of Baltimore people they've researched.

Any input would be most appreciated; revisions and/or additions will be incorporated into this post in bold.

The album measures approximately 11-1/2" by 8-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 27 of Henry's relatives, schoolmates and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

If you find a mistake in the captions of any of the images below, if you have a translation of the sentiment, or if you have information on the inscriber, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1870s Autograph Album of Emma L. Hintz of Boston, Massachusetts

1870s autograph album of Emma L. Hintz of Boston, Massachusetts.  The album was presented to Emma by Eddie Scott Bennett at South Boston, Massachusetts, on June 23, 1873.

The album is approximately 8-1/2" x 7" and contains the sentiments of 28 of Emma's friends, some of whom might have been classmates or fellow teachers.  One person drew a full page sketch of a sailboat.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Emma L. Hintz was born in Prussia about 1852, the daughter of Frederick and Maria E. (Strange) Hintz.   The Hintz family papers, including a circa 1880 carte de visite of Emma, are held by the Pennsylvania Historical Society.  The description of the papers mentions that Emma's father, a native of Poland and a carpenter, came to the United States from Konigsberg, Germany, in 1853, in advance of his wife and three daughters, who joined him in 1856.  Before his family joined him, Frederick had lived at East Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Roxbury, Massachusetts, but the family settled at New Ulm, Minnesota.  Apparently, though, they later moved to Boston, Massacshusetts.

Emma's sisters were Jennie Hintz and W. Bertha Hintz.  Jennie was living with Emma's family at Yonkers, New York, at the time of the 1900 and 1910 Censuses.

On 23 January 1884 at Boston, Massachusetts, Emma L. Hintz married Henry W. Nye, son of Ebenezer and  Mehitable (Dearth) Nye.  Henry was born at North Brookfield, Massachusetts, on 3 March 1848.   Emma and Henry had at least one child, Berthold Hintz Nye, born 27 October 1886 at Boston, Massachusetts.  He graduated from Columbia University in 1909 and married Dorothy Catherine Draper.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Two of the signers were related to Emma's future husband Henry W. Nye.  They were Henry's paternal uncle, Bonum Nye, and Bonum's daughter Mattie B. N. Bishop of North Brookfield, Massachusetts, who signed their pages in July 1878.

One signer, C. H. Dunton, wrote a year that looks like 1887, but that would be later than any other page, so I'm thinking that he actually wrote 1881.  There's a full page sketch on the right facing page that's dated 1881.  Additionally, another person named L. Dunton of Boston, Massachusetts, signed a page in 1881.
