1887 Autograph Album of John Gaub of New Jersey

Autograph album given to John Gaub of Deans, New Jersey, at Christmas 1887.

The album is approximately 7" x 4" and contains eighteen pages signed by relatives and perhaps friends as well.  Ten of the pages are written in German.

From online research, hopefully correct:

John Gaub was born 25 January 1884 at New Brunswick, New Jersey, probably in the Deans section of New Brunswick.  His parents were William and Maria (Stadlinger) Gaub, born in Germany and New York, respectively.

I don't have the names of William Gaub's parents.  Maria (Stadlinger) Gaub's parents were Peter and Carolina (Hammel) Stadlinger, German immigrants to New York, who later moved to Deans, New Jersey, where they were active members of the German community there.

I believe John graduated from Rutgers University and became a chemical or civil engineer.  At some point he moved to Pennsylvania.  I found an unsourced reference to wife Elsie (Shaw) who died in 1925.

John Gaub's mother signed a page in his album.

John's sister Elsie C. Gaub signed a page in 1906.

John's brother William Gaub signed a page in 1906.

Four of John's mother's siblings signed pages in his album.  

John's uncle Charles H. Stadlinger of Deans, New Jersey, signed a page in 1889.

John's uncle Henry E. Stadlinger of Deans, New Jersey, signed a page in 1889.

John's aunt Johannah Stadlinger of Deans, New Jersey, signed a page in 1889.

John's aunt Rosie Stadlinger of Deans, New Jersey, signed a page in 1889.

John's uncle Peter Stadlinger, Jr., of Buffalo, New York, signed a page in 1891.

Of the pages written in German, which unfortunately I can't read, I believe two were signed by John's maternal grandparents, Peter and Carolina (Hummel) Stadlinger in 1889 at Deans, New Jersey.

1848 Table to Compute Board Feet from a Log, Portland, Maine

Comprised of one sheet of paper, 12" x 7-1/4", folded in half.

I can just imagine how valuable this little booklet must have been to estimators, loggers and landowners.

1892 Obituary of George Carroll Jennings of Dexter, Maine and Portland, Maine

Obituary of George Carroll Jennings, a student from Dexter, Maine, at Portland, Maine, on 13 February 1892.

From online research, hopefully correct:

George Carroll Jennings was born about 1873 at Garland, Maine.  His parents were George Carroll Jennings and Caroline Priscilla (Skillin) Jennings, born at Dexter, Maine, and Garland, Maine, respectively.

His paternal grandparents were Horace and Sarah Jennings.  His maternal grandparents were James and Caroline (Adams) Skillin.

Obituary

George Carroll Jennings

Died in Portland, Feb. 13th, of orbital cellulitis, George Carroll Jennings.  About two weeks ago he was taken to the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary for treatment, and although he was an intense sufferer, he bore the pain with remarkable patience.

About ten years ago he went from Dexter to attend school.  he was an industrious scholar, and was beloved by teachers and scholars, while he won many friends outside of the school.  For the past three years he has been with Mrs. Glover on State street, assisting in various ways about the house to enable him to remain and pursue his studies.

The funeral services were held at Mrs. Glover's, Rev. Matt. S. Hughes of Chestnut Street church officiating.  There were many floral tributes, among them being a wreath from the teachers and pupils of the school, a cross from the employees at Mrs. Glover's, and a profusion of cut flowers from the boarders and other friends.

Miss Barton, preceptress of the school, accompanied the remains to Dexter, where he had a father and other relatives living.

Funeral services were also held at the residence of his grandfather, Monday, Rev. J. R. Clifford officiating.

The obituary seems to imply that the deceased's mother had already passed away or was otherwise not with his father.  I can't find a death record for her, though some online trees have her unsourced year of death as 1942.

Their paternal grandparents were George and Margaret Thurston.  Their maternal grandparents were Albert B. and Lydia Jane (Bailey) Estes.

According to a reader, Ralph Estes Thurston married Dorothea Eagles.  Frances May Thurston married George Porter.

Photograph, approximately 4-1/2" by nearly 3", of a woman identified on reverse as Mrs. Stephen D. Bartlett, on the running board of antique automobile.

She was presumably Jessie (Cummings) Bartlett, whose husband, Stephen Drew Bartlett, is featured in another post, with what appears to be the same automobile.  See that post for more information on Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett.

Cute Poem about an Eel Confounding a Maine Trout Fisherman

I don't usually feature contemporary items, but this poem is so clever I just have to share it.   

It was written by Maine man named Bryant Tribou Jr., perhaps when he was in school or as a memento of one of his fishing expeditions. 

American Eel (Anguilla rostrata)

I think that I shall never feel
A fish as slippery as an eel
An eel that slithered
in the bay
Unmindful of his fate that day

Above whose head my lures had lain
Hoping a trout would bite again
An eel that bent my light bamboo
Until it almost broke in two

Whose slimy hide I tried to grip
As he did a double twist and dip
Some fish are caught by fools like me
But eels are much too slippery

I found a marriage record for a Gordon B. Howe of Richmond, Maine, and Rena C. Ulmer of Bath, Maine, in 1945.
