1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Georgiana, possibly Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944) of Canton, Maine

1870s/1880s autograph album that belonged to a Georgianna, also known as Georgia and "Georgie", who presumably lived in the area of Canton, Maine, and North Livermore, Maine, where many of the inscribers lived.

Note: if you notice errors in dates, spellings and facts, please leave a comment so that the post can be amended. Many thanks!

The album measures approximately 5+" by 4" and contains the sentiments of 78 well wishers.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

The only inscriber who called herself a relative was cousin Annie Elizabeth Richardson (1852-unk), who would marry Marshall Lee Gray.

The owner may have been Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944), raised in the Canton, Maine, household of  Benjamin Lothrop and Abigail (Whitney) Lothrop, variously described as her parents or her grandparents, but more likely the latter.

If, after reading the alphabetical list of inscribers at the end of this post, you feel that someone other than Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944) was the album owner, please leave a comment so that this post can be amended.

A well-sourced, online biography of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes points to the strong possibility that the Lothrops' daughter, Dianthia Simmons Lothrop (1840-1935), or one of her sisters, was Georgiana's mother.

In her inscription below, Dianthia spells Georgiana's name as Georgianna, which may have been the correct spelling.

Dianthia Simmons Lothrop (1840-1935), possible mother of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944), possible album owner

Left: Abbie Marie Johnson (1856-1955)
Right: Susan Cleaves (Lothrop) Johnson (1836-1918); mother of Abbie Marie Johnson (1856-1955) and possible mother of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1844), possible album owner

Cynthia West Lothrop (1837-1917), possible mother of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones  Scholes (1860-1944), possible album owner

Sarah Whitney (Lothrop) Atkins (1843-1915), possible mother of Georgiana (Lothrop) Jones Scholes (1860-1944), possible album owner

Georgiana married Caleb Osaman Jones (1852-1931) about 1878. Theirs proved to be a rocky marriage, and by 1884 they were divorced. Georgiana moved to Waltham, Massachusetts and, a few months later in 1884, married William I. Scholes (1859-1938).  The couple lived in Massachusetts, but eventually moved to Manchester, New Hampshire. William died in 1938 and Georgia, of cerebral thrombosis, in 1944.

Interestingly, Dianthia Simmons Lothrop (1840-1935) lived with them in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and was a close figure throughout Georgiana's life.

If you information to share on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1882-1898 Autograph Album owned first by James D. Abbott (1869-1883) of Andover, Maine; and then by his niece Blanche M. Russell (1883-1966)

1874-1898 autograph album originally owned by James D. Abbott (1869-1883) of Andover, Maine; and later by his niece, Blanche M. Russell (1883-1966).

It would appear that James received this album as a Christmas present in 1882 but there is an earlier inscription by John L. Hutchins on June 4, 1882, unless John got the year wrong.  Sadly, James died just a few months after starting to collect inscriptions.

The album is a small one, measuring approximately 4-1/4" by 3" and contains the sentiments of nearly 40 wellwishers of James and Blanche. Two alphabetical lists appear at the end of this post, one of the inscribers to James and the other of the inscribers to Blanche.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Sadly, James died in his youth in 1883, not long after he started his album. The album apparently lay for a while before being reused in 1897 and 1898 by Blanche M. Russell (1883-1966), who was the daughter of James' sister Annie Marie (Abbott) Russell (1853-1917) and Orlando Perry Russell (1840-1906). Blanche would marry Clement U. Worcester (1902-1959).

Tucked in the album is a photograph of an old man identified as Ben Newton, a relative of James' mother, perhaps her older brother Benjamin.

If you have corrections and/or additional information on any of the people mentioned in this post, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1870s Autograph Album of, presumably, William Edward McPherson (1857-1949) of Concord, New Hampshire & Cape Elizabeth, Maine

1870s autograph album that belonged to a William E. McP? of Concord, New Hampshire.

Based on clues in the album, I believe he was William Edward McPherson (1857-1949)

On the ownership page, William noted that he lived in Concord, New Hampshire,  but many pages were inscribed by schoolmates in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  It appears that William, orphaned early, was living with his maternal aunt's family in Maine in 1874 and returned to New Hampshire by 1875, when other inscriptions were made by people in Pittsfield.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by a bit under 4" and contains the sentiments of 20 of his relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct and assuming that William Edward McPherson was indeed the album owner - corrections and additions requested:

William Edward McPherson was born 27 July 1857 in New Hampshire, the son of William Daniel McPherson (1825-1867) and Elizabeth Jordan (Newcomb) McPherson (1826-1861). William Edward's mother died in 1861 and his father in 1867.

At some point, perhaps as early as 1867, but definitely in 1874, he was living in the home of his mother's sister, Rhoda Symonds (Newcomb) Lindall and her family in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Rhoda's son Charles Edward Lindall (1860-1935) inscribed a page in the album.

By 1875, William was back in New Hampshire, where he collected autographs from Concord, Manchester and several from Pittsfield.  About 1882, he married Nellie A. Long (1859-1926), and the couple had several children. William's obituary in the  27 December 1949 issue of the Nashua Telegraph notes that he had been business and circulation manager at that paper in the early 1900s.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information provided here, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.
