1861-1864 Autograph Album of Ezza E. Sanders of San Francisco, California; daughter of Col. Lewis H. Sanders, Kentucky Native

Autograph album that was given by Laura on December 25, 1861 to Ezza E. Sanders of San Francisco, California, or Sacramento, California, where her father, Col. Lewis H. Sanders, practiced law.  Laura may have been Ezza's older sister Laura Eldridge Sanders.

The album, which measures approximately 8" by 6-1/2", was published by Leavitt & Allen of New York City, and contains four full page engravings, in addition to the title page, and the sentiments of nearly 20 of Ezza's friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Emma Ezza Sanders was born November 6, 1847 at Natchez, Mississippi, the daughter of Col. Lewis H. Sanders and Margaret Hubbell (Price) Sanders of Kentucky.  Read more about Col. Sanders' life and career here.  The family eventually moved to California, where Col. Sanders practiced law and Ezza, in 1863, was attending school.

Ezza's father died in 1864, and her mother returned to Kentucky. In 1869, Ezza married to Isham Railey of Versailles, Kentucky.  Ezza and Isham, had, I think, seven children, six daughters and a son.  Isham died in 1907, and Ezza in 1920.  According to Ezza's death certificate, she's buried in Versailles, Kentucky.

A few sample pages - if you have a different interpretation of the inscribers' names, please advise.

Sallie G. S. S. Olden; inscribed at San Francisco, California, on May 6, 1863; not sure of second initial

Dora C. S. Shew; inscribed at San Francisco, California, on May 11, 1863.

? H. Sather; inscribed at San Francisco, California, on May 7, 1863,  Given name possibly Luisa or Luica or perhaps starts with a Q, like Quica

1880s Autograph Album of Mattie A. Bailey, presumably of Logan County, Kentucky

1880s autograph album that belonged to Mattie A. Bailey, presumably of Logan County, Kentucky, and presumably a student at Pleasant Grove Academy and Logan Female College, which some of the inscribers cited.

The album was given to Mattie by Lula L. Hausford.

The album measures approximately 5-1/2" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 40 of Mattie's relatives, friends, schoolmates and teacher, two of whom inscribed more than one page.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Sadly, many people left only a given name or a nickname.

I'm not sure which of the several instances of a Mattie A. Bailey the album owner is.  Hopefully a reader will weigh in with a theory, based on the following clues:
  • Aunt Carrie
  • H. Bailey; "Your Acorn Hull cousin"
  • J. G. Bailey
  • S. Carrie Bailey

Some of the pages features intricate designs.

 S. Carrie Bailey

 Mattie Townsend

 Aunt Carrie

Lizzie Bell - I think, but I welcome your interpretation

J. R. Frank Miles left several pages of inscriptions, two of them written backwards.

If you have a theory as to the identity of Mattie A. Bailey or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s Autograph Album of Frances Isabelle Marriott, "Frankie", of Hardin County, Kentucky

1880s autograph album of Frances Isabelle Marriott, "Frankie", of Hardin County, Kentucky.  Surnames in the album that appear multiple times: Alvey; Bethel; Hayden; Heller; Kerfoot; Marriott; Mossbarger; Sullivan; Sutzer.

Frankie would later marry Benjamin Hardin Alvey, Sr.; two of their sons inscribed pages in the album when it came to light in a later era.  Those pages are shown farther below.

The title page has handwriting: "Love who you please but mind who you take.  Many thanks for such good advice".

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and contains the sentiments of about 66 of Frankie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

This bookmark from the California Fig Syrup Company is enclosed.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Frances Isabelle Marriott, "Frankie", was born July 22, 1865 at Elizabethtown, Kentucky, the daughter of John Belt Marriott and Amanda Ellen (Smith) Marriott.  Frankie had, I believe, five siblings, four of whom inscribed either shared pages or individual pages in the album.

Below, facing pages signed by four of Frankie's siblings and other friends.  Inscribers:
  • Mollie E. Marriott
  • Lou A. Marriott; presumably Frankie's sister Louisa A. Marriott, who would marry Miles Hardin Miller.
  • John B. Marriott, Jr.; Frankie's brother John Belt Marriott, Jr., who would marry Kate Goodman.
  • Maggie E. Marriott; Frankie's sister Margaret Ellen Marriott, who would marry Henry A. Sutzer.
  • J. E. Mossbarger
  • Lizzie Marriott; possibly Frankie's sister Elizabeth M. Marriott, who would marry Willis Woolfolk Long.
  • W. C. Mossbarger
  • Annie Heller
  • Sallie Bethel
  • Annie Heller, inscribed on May 9, 1886

Several of Frankie's cousins left inscriptions in the album, and there may have been more who didn't express a family relationship:
  • Elmore
  • Blanche
  • Nannie or Nancy or ?
  • Millie Marriott, inscribed at Glendale, Kentucky
  • Ella Miller, inscribed at Cecilian, Kentucky
  • Louise Smith, inscribed at Munfordville, Kentucky
  • J. O.Marriott
On December 17, 1889 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Frances Isabelle Marriott, "Frankie", married Benjamin Hardin Alvey, Sr., son of William Madison Alvey and Laura Ann (Medley) Alvey.  Benjamin was born January 6, 1865 in Hardin County, Kentucky.

By 1900, Frankie and Benjamin were living at Louisville, Kentucky, where Benjamin was working in dry goods in 1900.  The family had expanded to include four children, two of whom, John Marion Alvey, Sr., and William Benjamin Alvey, inscribed pages in their mother's album, as noted above.

The other children were Charles Raymond Alvey; Laura Elenor Alvey; Horace Hinton Alvey; Lucile M. Alvey; and Benjamin Hardin Alvey, Jr.

By 1920, Benjamin was manufacturing the automobile tops for which he had received a patent about 1917.  Benjamin died in 1938 and Frankie in 1961.  They're buried at the Cave Hill Cemetery at Louisville, Kentucky.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

One page contains a sketch of a mustached fellow.  The facing page was inscribed by W. T. D., but I don't know if there's a relationship between the two pages.

1889-1893 autograph album that belonged to Susan Birdie Crice, "Birdie", of Ballard County, Kentucky.  She bought the album on November 7, 1889, as you can see from the image below.

Susan Birdie Crice was born March 1, 1873 in Ballard County, Kentucky, the daughter of Frederick W. Crice and Mary Sue (Swearingen) Crice, who were born in Ballard County, Kentucky, and Shelby County, Kentucky, respectively.

Birdie's father inscribed a page in her album on December 6, 1889.

Two of Nellie's brothers and a sister inscribed pages in her album.  The J. H. C. who inscribed a page in December 6, 1889 was presumably Birdie's brother John Harmon Crice.

On October 6, 1897, Birdie married Oregon native Samuel A. Oliver and settled at Pendleton, Oregon with him.  They had two children, son Samuel A. Oliver and daughter Nellie Oliver.  Samuel, Sr., died in 1926.  Subsequently, Birdie married Charles F. 1876-1881 Autograph Album of Nellie M. Waters of Cincinnati, Ohio, while student at Cincinnati Normal School

1876-1881 autograph album that belonged to Martha Ellen Waters, or as she preferred, at least in her youth, Nellie M. Waters, of Cincinnati, Ohio, with most pages inscribed by her fellow students at Cincinnati Normal School.

The album was published by Ed. W. Welcke & Brother of 176 William St., New York.  It's the "Centennial Memorial" album and includes two pages of the Declaration of Independence and three pages of images the signatures of the signers of same.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 41 of Nellie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and alphabetical list of the signers, with any personal information they added, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:   [corrections and additions welcome!]

Martha Ellen Waters, "Nellie", was born about January 1859 in Maine, possibly at Winthrop, the daughter of Jabez Mathews Waters and Martha Ellen (Webb) Waters, who were born at Waterville, Maine, and Winthrop, Maine, respectively.  The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Jabez was a prominent businessman, inventor and school board member.

Two of Nellie's brothers signed pages in her album.  George Mathews Waters signed a page at Westwood, Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 1, 1881.  He was born 22 May 1861 at Cincinnati, Ohio, and married Julia Kiechler in 1890.  They moved to Indiana and were involved in the lumber manufacturing business.

Nellie's brother Frederick J. Waters signed the last page in the album.  He was born 16 December 1869 at Cincinnati, Ohio, and became an educator/administrator in Washington state.

Frederick's photograph from his passport.

Nellie's older brother, educator and school administrator William Everett Waters, born 20 December 1856 at Winthrop, Maine, did not sign a page in her album, but, interestingly, his future wife did.  Alma Filia Oyler, daughter of George Washington Oyler and Caroline (Pruden) Oyler, was Nellie's schoolmate, at least at Hughes High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, if not also at Cincinnati Normal School.  Perhaps William and Alma met as a result of Alma's friendship with Nellie.  They married June 28, 1888.

Another interesting signer in the album was Nellie's future husband Lewis Francis Phipps, born at Cincinnati, Ohio, on 18 January 1852, son of William and Lydia (Reynolds) Phipps.  They would marry 8 June 1882 and make their home at Cincinnati, Ohio, where Lewis was a merchant and manufacturer.

As noted above, many signers indicated that they were students at Cincinnati Normal School.  Some of the signers may have been faculty there.  Carrie Newhall Lathrop later became principal at Cincinnati Normal School, but I don't know what her status was - student, faculty, or administrator - when she signed a page in Nellie's album.

Three women named Webb, possibly related to Nellie through her mother Martha Ellen (Webb) Waters, shared a page inscribed in October 1876 with three others.  If these were relatives, perhaps Nellie had taken a trip East, or the five signers a trip West.  The signers were Annie Webb; Fannie D. Webb; May E. Webb; Frank W. Prince, who mentioned the Webb Museum at Winchester, Massachusetts; Alice D. Nason; and H. F. S. Wood.
