Journal kept by carpenter William Franklin Eaton of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and at least one other person, perhaps William's first wife Sarah (Dill) Eaton, with entries from the 1860 to 1902.
Several pages detail baptisms performed in South Caroline - at Hilton Head and Port Royal. Details include names of those baptized, dates and places, including Broad River, Rhett Place and Drayton Plantation. There's an interesting story, I'm sure, in how William happened to be in South Carolina in 1864. Hopefully a reader will have knowledge of it.
By inference from the journal, it's also likely that William was a rural letter carrier in the Bowery Beach district of Cape Elizabeth. Some of the entries are in a different handwriting and may have been written by Sarah - these included entries about egg sales and Christmas presents received in 1899 and 1900.
William Franklin Eaton was born November 27, 1824 at Greene, Maine, the son of Capt. William Eaton and Philena (Niles) Eaton, according to a record in Maine Births and Christenings, 1739-1900. William Franklin Eaton's gravestone, however, shows a birth year as 1825.
William Franklin Eaton married twice:
- Sarah Dill, on August 16, 1846 at Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Sarah died November 22,1901 at "15 of 12 on Friday night". One page in the journal mentions funeral expenses and an injury on the electric railroad, though I don't know if the injury was suffered by Sarah or by William or someone else.
- Jennie S. Hayward, on October 8, 1902 at Portland, Maine; she died in 1917.
William died in 1906 and is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at South Portland, Maine, with wives Sarah and Jennie.
