1878/1880s Autograph Album of Alice E. Farrar of Lewiston, Maine; Class of 1882 at Lewiston High School

1878/1880s autograph album of Alice E. Farrar, a member of the Class of 1882 at Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Maine. Alice would become a noted artist.

Most of the inscriptions are from fellow students or teachers in Lewiston, with several, presumably relatives, from Bath, Maine, where Alice's mother was born.

On many of the pages, in a nice touch, Alice added later notes in pencil with information on marriages, deaths, etc.

Alice inscribed the first page of handwriting, as well as adding her name to a page signed by, presumably, her three best friends at Lewiston High School - "We four, no more".

Alice E. Farrar of Lewiston, Maine; album owner

Page shared by Alice E. Farrar and friends Lucy G. Hadley, Kittie I. Clark and Tillie Small -
We four, no more"

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 60 of Alice's classmates, schoolmates, teachers and others.  An alphabetical surname list appears below; an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Alice E. Farrar (1865-1902) was born 8 October 1865 at Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of David Farrar and Lucy W. (Purinton) Farrar, who were born in Lisbon, Maine, and Bath, Maine, respectively. The 1900 US Census of Lewiston shows Alice's occupation as artist.

Alice died on 14 January 1902 at Lewiston, Maine, and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery there, with her parents. I don't believe she had ever married.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Cora May Church (1871-1961) was born 25 January 1871 at Canaan, Maine, the daughter of William Church and Eunice (Wheeler) Church. Cora had at least 9 siblings, at least five of whom inscribed pages in the album:
  • George E. Church
  • Georgia Etta (Church) Lary
  • Carrie Viola Church
  • Lizzie Church
  • Hiram Church

Georgia Etta (Church) Lary, who mentions her daughter Gracie M. Lary; Cora's oldest sister

On 6 June 1894 at Pittsfield, Maine, Cora M. Church (1871-1961) married Obed Foss Parks (1866-1939), son of Richard Parks and Elizabeth (Madden) Parks.  In a town report of Pittsfield, Maine, his printed name is O. Foss Parks, but his gravestone reads Obed F. Parks.  Cora and Obed farmed at Pittsfield, Maine. It appears they didn't have children.

Cora May (Church) Parks (1871-1961), her husband Obed Foss Parks (1866-1939) and other Parks relatives are buried in the Pittsfield Village Cemetery in Pittsfield, Maine.

1884-1890 Autograph Album of Lottie of Lincoln Center, Lincoln, Maine; possibly Charlotte G. Scammon (1879-1919)

1884-1890 autograph album that belonged to a Lottie, presumably from Lincoln Center in Lincoln, Maine, where most of the inscribers resided.

Judging from the inscribers, Lottie may have been Charlotte G. Scammon (1879-1919), daughter of Francis D. Scammon and second wife Hannah Jeanette (Heald) Scammon.  By 1900, according to the US Census, Charlotte, still single, was teaching at Willimantic, Maine.

The Minnie Scammon who inscribed a page on January 23, 1887, was presumably Charlotte's older sister, Minnie Laura Scammon (1868-1949), who would marry Frank H. Annis.

Lottie's "Aunt Angie" inscribed a page, facing that of E. E. Hatch. They were Angie M. (Heald) Hatch (1860-1924) and Everett E. Hatch of Chester, Maine, who married in 1884. Angie was a younger sister to Charlotte's mother Hannah Jeanette (Heald) Scammon.

In 1907 Charlotte married John Roscoe Reed (1875-1953) of Wellington, Maine. They farmed at Plymouth, Maine, and Hermon, Maine.  After Charlotte's death, John married Mae (Murphy) Smith.  Charlotte, John and Mae are buried in the Pine Tree Cemetery in Hermon, Maine; Charlotte's infant daughter is buried with them. Charlotte's other daughter survived into adulthood.
