Small New Testament Bible of Samuel Lyford Hutchins of Brookfield, New Hampshire

Small Polymicrian Testament that belonged to Samuel Lyford Hutchins of Brookfield, New Hampshire, in his youth.

It may have been in the possession of other people at times, as at least three more names appear, although not as prominently as Samuel's name.  See farther below.

The Testament is a small one, measuring approximately 4-1/2" by 2-3/4".  The front cover has detached, and there's a bit of staining throughout.  It was published in 1846 in New York, New York, by A. S. Barnes & Company of 51 John Street.

Samuel's name appears on several pages.  Brookfield, New Hampshire is more legible in the second of the two images below.

Three other names also appear, as shown below.
  • F. B. Shory; presumably Fred B. Shorey of Wakefield, New Hampshire
  • Aug W. Richards; presumably Augustus W. Richards of Wakefield, New Hampshire
  • Perhaps Fontaine

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Samuel Lyford Hutchins was born October 21, 1852 at Wakefield, New Hampshire, the son of John Sanborn Hutchins and Betsey (Lyford) Hutchins.  By 1860, the family had moved to Brookfield, New Hampshire, where they were recorded in the US Census of that year.

Samuel, a businessman and excelsior manufacturer, married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Drew, who died in 1877, perhaps after lingering effects of the birth of their daughter Sadie Bell Hutchins, who herself died in 1888.  On October 25, 1880 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, Samuel married Mary Adaline Corson, a Wakefield, New Hampshire, native.  They had two children, one of whom died in infancy.

Samuel died in 1902 and Mary Adaline in 1939.  According to their Find-a-Grave memorials, which contain information and some photographs, Samuel, his two wives and three of his children are buried in the Union Cemetery at Union, New Hampshire.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information about the other people mentioned, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1878-1905 Autograph Album of Nellie Howe (Reynolds) Hutchinson of Canton, Maine

Autograph album kept by Nellie Howe (Reynolds) Hutchinson of Canton, Maine from 1878-1905, before and after her marriage to Wallace Everett Hutchinson.  Although several of the inscriptions predate Nellie's marriage, she apparently added the page below at some point after her marriage.

The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 35 of Nellie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they left, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to her death record, Nellie Howe Reynolds was born December 15, 1861 at Canton, Maine, the daughter of Thomas Reynolds and his first wife Sybil B. (Howe) Reynolds.  Sybil died in 1866, and Thomas subsequently married Livonia Hutchinson.

Thomas and Livonia inscribed pages in Nellie's album, Thomas in 1878 and Livonia in 1885. Interestingly, Thomas mentioned Herdsdale Farm, which was owned by New York City merchant Warren Ward.  Thomas may have been the farm's manager.  The house shown in this link may be the house that the Reynolds family called home.

On April 25, 1880 at Weld, Maine, Nellie Howe Reynolds married Wallace Everett Hutchinson, son of Luther Hutchinson and Julia (Winters) Hutchinson.  According to his death certificate, Wallace was born April 26, 1857 at Weld, Maine.  I believe Nellie and Wallace had four children, one of whom, Hazel Velma Hutchinson inscribed a page in her mother's album and gave her residence as Berry's Mills, Maine.

Wallace died in 1915 and Nellie in 1920; they're buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Canton, Maine.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Also inscribing pages in Nellie's album:
  • Arthur Reynolds of Canton, Maine; Nellie's brother
  • J. W. Howe who was presumably Nellie's maternal uncle John Ward Howe
  • Paternal aunt Lydia H. (Reynolds) Holland of Canton Point, Maine; also her husband Cornelius Marshall Holland and daughter Cora
  • Paternal aunt-in-law Louisa A. (Babb) Reynolds of Canton, Maine; widow of Daniel Reynolds, Jr.
  • Brother-in-law Irvin Wallace Hutchinson of Weld, Maine
  • Cora Holland of Canton Point, Maine; cousin; daughter of Cornelius Marshall Holland and Lydia H. (Reynolds) Holland
  • Cousin Jennie S. Reynolds of Canton, Maine
  • Flora L. Hutchinson of Weld, Maine; cousin related through Nellie's husband Wallace Everett Hutchinson and her mother Livonia (Hutchinson) Reynolds
  • Edith E. Holman of Dixfield, Maine; cousin related through Nellie's husband Wallace Everett Hutchinson and her step-mother Livonia (Hutchinson) Reynolds

  • ? Reynolds, inscribed in March 1885.  Initials very ornate and could be A. T. or C. 1880-1910 Autograph Album of Clara Ann Kegg of Little Shasta, California

1880-1910 autograph album kept by Clara Ann Kegg of Little Shasta, California, before and after her marriage to August Janson.  On a page inscribed by Clara herself, she indicated that the album was a Christmas present in 1880.

Clara added the names of future spouses to the pages of many inscribers; refer to the list of inscribers at the end of this post.

As you can see from the page at left in the above image, two pages were inscribed in 1879, but these are pasted in the album, apparently from a previous album or from individual  notes to Clara.  The W. Crow who inscribed the left page was apparently related to Clara's mother, Susannah (Crow) Kegg.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 100 of Clara's relatives, friends and teacher.  In a nice touch for family historians, Clara frequently added the names of people inscribers would marry, including some dates, information included in the list of inscribers at the end of this post.

An alphabetical list of surnames and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Clara Ann Kegg was born about October 1868 in Siskiyou County, California, the daughter of John Kegg and Susannah (Crow) Kegg.  Susannah inscribed a page in daughter Clara's album.

Clara had several siblings, some of whom left their names in her album.  One page contains Clara's autograph, written in 1890, and those of Don Keg; Clay Keg; and Fred Kegg; as well as that of Cornelia Soule, who left her message in 1884.  Clara's teacher, W. H. Laird, inscribed the facing page.

Siblings ClayKegg; Ella Kegg; Emma Kegg; Fred Kegg; and Meta Kegg inscribed individual pages.  William Dow Simcox, son of Clara's sister Cecilia, inscribed a page in 1894.

About 1891, Clara Ann Kegg married August Janson, son of John and Josephine Janson.  Clara and August lived at Table Rock, California, and had, I believe, four children, two of whom died young.  August died in 1939 and Clara in 1947; they're buried in the Little Shasta Cemetery at Montague, California.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1885-1911 Autograph Album of Vanetta E. (Ogier) Heal of Camden, Maine; Passed on to Sister Frances D. Ogier

Autograph album with inscriptions from 1885 to 1911 that originally belonged to Vanette E. Ogier, "Vannie", of Camden, Maine, and then apparently passed on to her sister Frances Deborah Ogier, "Fannie", after Vannie's death in 1906.

See another post that features an 1880s-1890s autograph album that Fannie herself kept; many of the people who inscribed pages in Vannie's album also inscribed pages in Fannie's.  And Vannie herself, as Mrs. J. H. Heal, inscribed a page.

Vannie's album measure approximately 8" by 6" and contains the sentiments of over 30 of her friends, including a page inscribed by her future husband James Henry Heal of Lincolnville, Maine, and another stamped with the name and address of J. H. Heal of Camden, Maine.

An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

Sadly, the first few pages of the album are missing, including the title page and what might have been a page with Vannie's own inscription.  Her identity as the album owner was teased out through the inscriptions of
  • Henry G. Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, who called her "Vannie" and "The belle of Camden Me."
  • Clarence Ogier, who directed his inscription of 1911 to his aunt Fannie, who was apparently then in possession of the album.  Fannie was Vannie's older sister.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  corrections and additions requested

Vanetta E. Ogier, "Vannie" was born in 1870, the daughter of Samuel Emery Ogier and Martha Ann (Heal) Ogier.  About 1889, according to the 1900 Census, Vannie married James Henry Heal, son of Henry Heal and Julia Ann (Dickey) Heal.  They had two daughters, Grace Mina Heal and Helen A. Heal, before Vannie died in 1906.   Vannie, James and his second wife Bertha (Green) are buried in the Mount View Cemetery at Camden, Maine.

Grace inscribed a page in the album in 1907, after Vannie's death.
