Bible of Benjamin Franklin Haugh (1829-1912) of Maryland and Indiana

19th century Bible of Benjamin Franklin Haugh (1829-1912), a Maryland native, whose family moved to Indiana about 1836.  The Bible was presented to Benjamin by his mother, Mary Elizabeth (Reck) Haugh, on January 23, 1853.

The Bible, published by the American Bible Society at New York, New York, in 1852, measures approximately 7" by 4-1/2" by 1-1/2" and has:
  • three pages of family records
  • a paper scrap with Benjamin's parents' birth and marriage dates
  • a newspaper clipping entitled "The Fourteenth Amendment, Congress to be Asked to Honor Stephen Neal for Drafting It".  Just below the title appear the handwritten words  Your Mother's Uncle Odie.  Stephen Neal was born in Virginia in 1817 and moved to Indiana after becoming a lawyer.  He was married three times, I believe.  I'd be interested to hear how he connects with the Haugh family.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to his Indiana Death Certificate, Benjamin Franklin Haugh was born August 19, 1829 in Maryland.  He was the son of Adam Haugh, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth (Reck) Haugh, who, about 1836, moved their family to Indianapolis, Indiana.

The first Family Record page notes notes Benjamin's marriage to Sislenea Kersey on November 24, 1853 and lists their children: John Adam Elisha Haugh; Benjamin Orim Haugh; Mary Louisa Haugh, who died young; Harry Haugh; and Ida Haugh.

Other pages provide birth, death and age information on:
  • Benjamin's brother Adam Haugh, Jr., born October 4, 1826; died July 18, 1850
  • Adam Haugh, Sr., born February 9, 1789; died August 13, 1869; this information is written on a Family Record page and on a scrap of paper.
  • Mary Elizabeth (Reck) Haugh, born July 17, 1795; died June 23, 1873; her birth date is written in two places, on a Family Record page and on a scrap of paper.  Note:  Her Pennsylvania birth record gives her birth year as 1794.
  • The marriage of Benjamin Franklin Haugh's son Benjamin Orion Haugh [or Orim] to Mary Emma Blake on March 2, 1886
  • The birth dates of Benjamin Orion Haugh's children Mary Jeannette Haugh on March 11, 1887; and Benjamin Franklin Haugh, Jr., on December 19, 1893
  • The marriage of John Adam Elisha Haugh to Caroline Anderson on December 27, 1887
Sislenea Haugh died in 1886.  The Indiana State Library has in its collection a 12 page booklet entitled In Memory of Mrs. B. F. Haugh.   Benjamin died at Anderson, Indiana, on September 3, 1912.  Benjamin and Sislenea are buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery at Indianapolis, Indiana, with other relatives.

Autograph Album Presented in 1856 to Martha Washington Naill of Linganore, Maryland

Autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Martha Washington Naill, "Mattie", of Linganore, Maryland.

See another post that features a similar autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Mattie's sister Susannah Ann Marie Naill.

The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 20 of Mattie's relatives and friends.  It was published by J. C. Riker of New York, New York and contains 6 full page engravings.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Martha Washington Naill, "Mattie", was born January 10, 1842 in Maryland, possibly Frederick County, the daughter of David Washington Naill and Susannah (Maurer ?) Naill.   Mattie had several other siblings than sister Susannah.  Their younger sister Isabella Bannon Naill added to a page inscribed by four others, one of whom was album owner Mattie herself and Mattie's future husband John Henry Chew.

On April 28, 1881, Mattie became the second wife of John Henry Chew, whose first wife, Matilda (Crusey) Chew, had died in 1878, after the birth of, I believe, 5 children.  John was born in Maryland, possibly at Uniontown, on July 31, 1822.

In addition to the page above, John inscribed facing pages in 1883, after their marriage.

John died in 1889 and Mattie in 1921.  John is buried in the Carrollton Church of God at Carrollton, Maryland; Mattie is buried in the Greenwood Church Cemetery at New Windsor, Maryland.

In addition to Mattie's sister Isabella and her husband John Henry Chew, other relatives who inscribed pages:
  • Cousin Amanda of Zanesville, Ohio
  • Keziah or Mariah, who inscribed a page on September 9, 1858
  • Cousin Elizabeth A. Snader, "Lizzie", daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie's father David Washington Naill
  • Cousin Mollie A. Snader, presumably Mary A. Snader, daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie's father David Washington Naill
  • Mattie A. E. Snader - Martha A. E. Snader, daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie Washington Naill's father David Washington Naill
  • D. M. Sparks of Wyanet, Illinois - Davis Washington Sparks, son of  Joseph S. Sparks and Elizabeth (Naill) Sparks, who was a sister to Mattie's father David Washington Naill.
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Autograph Album Presented in 1856 to Susannah Ann Marie Naill of Linganore, Maryland

Autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Susannah Ann Marie Naill, "Susie", of Linganore, Maryland.

See another post that features a similar autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Susannah's sister Martha Washington Naill, "Mattie".

The album  measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 20 of Susie's relatives and friends.  It was published by J. C. Riker of New York, New York, and contains 6 full page engravings.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Susannah Ann Marie Naill, "Susie" or "Sue", was born August 6, 1839 in Frederick County, Maryland, the daughter of David Washington Naill and Susannah (Maurier ?) Naill.  Susie had several siblings other than sister Martha; the Washington who inscribed a page may have been their brother Washington Maurer Naill.

On March 4, 1862 at Frederick, Maryland, or in Frederick County, Maryland, Susie married Basil Pinkney DeVilbiss, who was likely the "Pinkney" who inscribed a page in her album in December 1861 and presumably also "friend P", who inscribed a page in November 1861.  Tucked in with the page inscribed by Pinkney is a poem clipped from a newspaper.

Susie and Pinkney had 5 children, I believe, before Susie died on September 22, 1878 at Johnsville, Maryland.  Pinkney married Sarah Eugenia Booker on December 19, 1882; he died January 7, 1899, also at Johnsville, Maryland.

Several of Susie's cousins inscribed pages in her album:
  • A cousin at Park Hall, Maryland, possibly with the nickname "Pet", possibly a sister to inscribers Margaret A. Snader, "Maggie", and Elizabeth Ann Snader, "Lizzie".
  • Washington, possibly Susie's brother Washington Maurer Naill, who inscribed a page on September 8, but didn't indicate a year; perhaps 1858, as other inscribers mentioned that date.
  • Susie's cousin P. S., though I'm not sure of the initials, of Zanesville, Ohio, who inscribed a page on September 8, 1858
  • Susie's cousin A. M. S. or A. W. S. of Zanesville, Ohio
  • Susie's cousin Maggie at Park Hall, Maryland; presumably Margaret A. Snader, daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Susie's father David Washington Naill.
  • Cousin E. A. Snader at Park Hall, Maryland; presumably Elizabeth A. Snader, "Lizzie", daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Susie's father David Washington Naill.
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

One sentiment, a particularly sad one, is a copy of a poem by British poet Letitia Elizabeth Landon.  The last sentence is particularly sad.  Landon was born in 1802 at Chelsea, London and died in 1838 off the coast of Ghana, "from an overdose of hydrocyanic acid, which is said to have been accidental".

1881 Letter from James W. Bradbury at Augusta, Maine, to Mr. and Mrs. George W. Childs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1881 letter written by Hon. James Ware Bradbury at Augusta, Maine, to Mr. and Mrs. George W. Childs, presumably Philadelphia Public Ledger publisher George William Childs and Emma Bouvier (Peterson) Childs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Sadly, the envelope is missing.

Bradbury was expressing regret at having to decline an invitation to the wedding of the Childs' niece.  See a transcription below.

It's possible that the bride, Miss Peterson, and groom, Mr. Carter, were Mary Bouvier Peterson, daughter of Emma Bouvier (Peterson) Childs' brother Robert Evans Peterson, Jr.;  and Robert Harris McCarter, though Mary and Robert did not marry until 1886.  Interestingly, they named their son George William Childs McCarter.

Transcription

Augusta
October 5, 1881
Mr. and Mrs. George W. Childs
My dear Friends,
Please accept my thanks for your kind invitation to the wedding of your Niece.
I assure you it would give me so great pleasure to meet you, especially on so joyful an occasion, that the ___ [? environment ?] of age (more than four score years) and the distance alone prevent my undertaking the journey.
With the ardent wish that the highest anticipation of happiness of Mr. Carter and Miss Peterson, who are now to unite their destinies in the most sacred and intimate relations, may be more than realized, here and hereafter I remain,
with sincere personal regard,
Very truly yours,
James W. Bradbury

P.S.  Please remember me kindly to the Father and Mother of the Bride elect.

If you believe Miss Peterson was someone else and that Mr. Carter was really  Mr. Carter and not Mr. McCarter, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1891-1892 Autograph Album of Signers from Sherwood, Maryland Area

1891-1892 autograph album of an owner from the Sherwood, Maryland, area, including some who were students at the Sherwood School and Sherwood Academy.  According to the person from whom I bought the album, Sherwood Academy was located on what was the Sherwood Farm at Montgomery County, Maryland; the school is now known as Sherwood High School.

The album measures approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 16 people.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers appear at the end of this post.

There are three clues to the identity of the owner, which may resonate with a reader.  If so, hopefully the reader will leave a comment to clear up the mystery.

One relative was cousin Janie P. Brooke of Sherwood, Maryland.

Another cousin was Faith Farquhar of Sherwood, Maryland.  Other people with the surname Farquhar signed pages in the album; refer to the list of signers below.

And a third cousin was Augusta N. Thomas, a student at Sherwood Academy, who dated her page October 23, 1891.

If the clues are enough to lead you to the identify of the album owner, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Likewise, please leave a comment if you have information on any of the signers listed below.

1880s Autograph Album of Elsie; Many Signers from Ipswich, Massachusetts

1880s autograph album that belonged to an Elsie, possibly from Ipswich, Massachusetts, the Boston area, or Baltimore, Maryland.  Many of the signers had a connection to the Appleton and Heard families of Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Hopefully a reader can tease out Elsie's identity.

The album was purchased with an 1867 diary from the Newbury, Massachusetts, area, filled mostly with laconic weather observations by its farmer owner.

The album measures approximately 8" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 35 of Elsie's friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers, with residence information, appears at the end of this post.

In the event that Elsie lived at Ipswich, I found an Elsie M. Cartledge, daughter of William and Ellen (Jarvis) Cartledge.  She would marry Charles E. Goodhue, son of William and Caroline (Bill) Goodhue, at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1893.  However, this Elsie was probably a tad too young.

Many of the signers had a connection to Appleton Farms at Ipswich, Massachusetts, which was founded by Samuel Appleton in 1636, carried on for well over 300 years by members of the Appleton family and operated today by the Trustees of Reservations.

Among the signers is James W. Appleton, who signed his page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, on September 13, 1883.  He wasn't the only signer to mention a fire; there must be a story there!

Henrietta Greenleaf Woods Smith, daughter of Rev. John Cotton Smith and Harriet Hooper (Appleton) Smith signed two pages, one on July 7, 1882 at Briar Hill, Ipswich, Massachusetts, and one on September 13, 1883 at Ipswich, Massachusetts.  The Briar Hill House at Appleton Farms was the Smith family's summer home.  Read more about the Briar Hill House here.

Other signers were members of the Heard family of Ipswich, Massachusetts.  Harvard Business School had an exhibit, still available online, on this family, entitled "A Chronicle of the China Trade; the Records of Augustine Heard & Co., 1840-1877".

The A. F. Heard who signed a page at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in July 1884 and cited Byron's "Don Juan" was presumably Albert Farley Heard, who worked in the China trade with his uncle Augustine Heard; acted as a liaison between Russia and China for a number of years; was secretary to fellow Massachusetts native William Crowninshield Endicott, who was then War Secretary under Grover Cleveland; and, finally, served as the U.S. Army Librarian.  Read more about Albert Farley Heard here - scroll down a bit and you'll find two paragraphs on him, as well as a photograph.  And read "Poisoning by Wholesale: a Reminiscence of China Life", by Albert Farley Heard, here, transcribed by Robert M. Gray from papers found in the Augustine Heard collection.

Another resource online with Heard family information is "Amy Heard, Letters from the Gilded Age", transcribed, translated and edited by Robert M. Gray in 2005.  I believe the Max Heard who signed a page in Elsie's album on June 23, 1883, was Amy's sister Helen Maxima Heard, "Max", who is mentioned frequently throughout; there's even a photograph.  Max would later marry Max von Brandt, German Plenipotentiary to Japan 1860-1875 and to China 1875-1893.  See a robe here that belonged to either Max or her sister Amy.

Baltimore, Maryland, was represented by the Gilman family, four of whom signed pages in March of 1882, and by George Leeds.  Daniel Coit Gilman, first president of Johns Hopkins University, and his second wife Elizabeth Dwight (Woolsey) Gilman shared a page.  Daniel's daughters Lizzie and Alice, whose mother was Daniel's first wife Mary Van Winker (Ketcham) Gilman, signed individual pages.

George Leeds signed his page at Baltimore, Maryland, on March 22, 1882.  Refer to the list below for more people with Leeds in their name.

Other names with a relationship to the Appleton and Heard families are Fuller, Thayer and Tuckerman; again, refer to the list below.

If you have a theory as to Elsie's identity or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1900 Autograph Album of Ethel M. Fulton of Oakwood, Maryland

[Note: Please read the comments section for a reader's informative comment of 13 February 2013.]

Autograph album that was presented to Ethel M. Fulton of Oakwood, Maryland, by her father William M. Fulton on 30 November 1900.

The seller of this album indicated that there might be a family relationship between Ethel and inventor Robert Fulton, as several of the signers came from the area of his birthplace.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" by 5" and contains over 30 pages signed by Ethel herself, her relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers in the album appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ethel M. Fulton was born in Maryland about March 1887, the daughter of William M. Fulton.  Ethel's mother had apparently died by the time of the 1900 Census, and I wasn't able to learn her identity.

I'm wondering if her maiden name was Keen, judging from the signers named Keen who called themselves Ethel's cousin.  Hopefully a reader with knowledge of this family will clear up the mystery.

Ethel's paternal grandparents were Mensal [or a variant] William Fulton and Hannah Cecilia (Osborn) Fulton.

If you have corrections to the information above or additions to it on the Fulton and Keen families or on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

c1900 Photograph of young man Walter Scott Bouton, Missouri and Maryland

c1900 photograph, possibly a graduation photograph, of a young man identified on the reverse as Walter Scott Bouton.  There's no photographer's marking.

At first I thought the young man was Walter Scott of Boston, but later came to believe the word was Bouton, not Boston.  If you disagree, especially if you know of a Walter Scott from the Boston area or the graduate of a Boston college, who is the spitting image of the fellow in the photograph, please leave a comment or contact me directly  Thanks!

From online research, hopefully correct, and assuming I have the correct young man:

Walter Scott Bouton was born 4 September 1876 in Missouri, son of William and Mary R. (Conklin) Bouton.  He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and subsequently found his way to Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked as Chief Engineer of Bridges for the B&O Railroad.

On 28 January 1904 at Baltimore, Walter married Florence Redburn White, who was born in Canada about 1875.

The couple had at least two daughters, born before 1910.

If you have further information on Walter Scott Bouton and Florence Redburn (White) Bouton, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
