1847 Letter from John B. Richards at Bangor, Maine, to his Father John D. Richards at Ellsworth, Maine: re: Henry Scott & Mr. Collett

1847 letter from J. B. Richards at Bangor, Maine, to his father John D. Richards at Ellsworth, Maine.  The letter concerns the possible apprenticeship of Henry Scott to Mr. Collett, presumably Bangor, Maine, file maker Thomas Collett, his younger brother Job Collett, or Thomas' son John Collett.

Transcription

Bangor Nov 1, 1847

Dear Father
Your letter requesting the conditions on which Mr. Collett wishes to have Henry Scott bound was duly received. Since its receipt, I have inquired of him as you desired what terms he intends to take Henry upon. He replied, "upon the same terms which he took other apprentices". Which terms I understand are - to give them their board & clothing and the privilege of attending the apprentices school winter ___. He told me on the first place that he would not take a boy to learn the trade unless he were bound. His object in being so particular in this respect is to secure their services the last two years of their apprenticeship, for the first years of their service he says does not benefit him any. I think it very proper in this case that Henry should be bound. Since he desires it himself - and moreover since his keeping his place depends upon it - as Mr. Collett would not be satisfied without it.

Henry Scott continues to like -
Affectionately, J. B. Richards

John D. Richards was presumably John Davis Richards; son J. B. Richards was presumably John Black Richards.

Read more about the Collett family here.

I'd like to know which Henry Scott the prospective apprentice was and if he pursued the apprenticeship and continued on in the trade.

Photograph of, presumably, young Ellis Stanley Young (1909-1896) of South Gouldsboro, Maine

Photograph of a young child with handwriting on the reverse: Ellis Young, South Gouldsboro, Maine.

Presumably the child is Ellis, rather than an Ellis Young who was designated to receive the photograph.  If the former, he was likely Ellis Stanley Young (1909-1986), son of Nathan Cole Young and Clara Helen (Bunker) Young and future husband of Ivy Anita Rice.
If you recognize this young man as Ellis Stanley Young, please leave a comment - while being aware of privacy concerns.

1857 Letter from J. L. Lawrence to H. H. Hobbs, Esq. regarding Veazie v. Lawrence

August 18, 1857 letter from J. L. Lawrence at Franklin, Maine, to H. H. Hobbs, Esq., regarding the lawsuit Veazie v. Lawrence.

Franklin, Maine
August 18, 1857
H. H. Hobbs, Esq.
Dear Sir: - Immediately on receipt of this, please write, addressing me at No. 18, Exchange Street, Boston, & inform me whether you will be at Court at its next session & have the Action Veazie vs. Lawrence continued, as it is my object to have a trial of same at Some future day -
Yours respectfully
J. L. Lawrence

J. L. Lawrence may have been Col. John L. Lawrence of Kittery Point, Maine, a merchant who had dealings in eastern Maine. He was injured in a carriage accident near the Hancock/Washington County line in 1858.

H. H. Hobbs may have been Hiram Hay Hobbs (1802-1884) of South Berwick, Maine.

Veazie may have been General Samuel Veazie (1787-1868), who owned lumber mills in Eastern Maine.

The lawsuit may have regarded a lumber sales dispute or a railway.

Real Photo Postcard of a Boy; possibly a member of the Giles Family of Eastbrook, Maine

Real photo postcard of a boy with "Mrs. Belle Giles, Eastbrook, Maine, on the reverse.

Whether the boy is Mrs. Giles' son or the name of a person to whom the photograph was to be given, is unknown.

Mrs. Belle Giles was presumably Belle Sarah (Wilbur) Giles (1866-1937), wife of George W. Giles (1857-1934).  They had two sons: Earle W. Giles (1889-1959) and Everett Tasker Giles (1898-1986).  Perhaps the boy pictured is one of the two.

If you recognize the photograph from your family photos or research, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
