1880s Autograph Album of "Fossie"; Student at China Village High School at China, Maine

1880s autograph album that belonged to a "Fossie", a student at China Village High School in China, Maine.

The album was found with two other albums from China, Maine, both belonging to Georgia Ann Hunnewell (1875-1962):

The album measures approximately 6" by 4" and contains the sentiments of 30 of Fossie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical listing of all of the inscribers appears at the end of this post.

Foster [4]Pearson

It's tempting to think that Fossie's surname might have been Foster, since Georgia Ann Hunnwell married Thomas Merrill Foster, and four people with the surname Foster inscribed pages in the album.

Clues to Fossie's identity from inscribers who mentioned a family relationship:
  • Aunt Lizzie, inscribed at Waterville, Maine, on April 14, 1883
  • Minnie D. Crowell of China, Maine; inscribed on October 12, 1885 at China Village High School during the Fall Term.  Not sure of middle initial.  "Your  loving cousin"
  • E. W. Foster of China, Maine; inscribed on April 15, 1888.  "Your Uncle", presumably Edmund Ward Foster (1860-1928), who, interestingly enough, was the older brother of Thomas Merrill Foster who would marry the above mentioned Georgia Ann Hunnwell in 1895.

If you have a theory as to Fossie's identity or information on any of the other people mentioned, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1882+ Autograph Album of Georgia Ann Hunnewell of China, Maine; Student at China Village High School

1882+ autograph album that belonged to Georgia Ann Hunnewell (1875-1962) of China, Maine, at student at China Village High School.

The album is accompanied by another of Georgia's albums and an album that belonged to a "Fossie".  Interestingly, Georgia would marry Thomas Merrill Foster (1857-1944). Perhaps "Fossie" was a Foster relative of Thomas.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Georgia Ann Hunnewell was born 21 May 1875 at China, Maine, the daughter of William S. Hunnewell and Edna C. (Jones) Hunnewell.  The J. F. Hunnewell who inscribed the page at right shown below may have been George's paternal grandfather.

On 5 May 1896, Georgia married Thomas Merrill Foster.  It appears that they lived in Waterville, Maine, at first, but, by 1910, were farming in China, Maine.  They're buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in China, Maine.

The T. M. Foster who inscribed a page in the above-mentioned "Fossie's" autograph album was likely Thomas Merrill Foster.

Inscribers who mentioned a family relationship - and there were likely others:
  • May E. Copeland of Albion Maine; "Your Affectionate Aunt"
  • Nellie C. M. Jones; inscribed at China, Maine, on August 18, 1883. Georgia's maternal aunt Ellen C. M. Jones, who would marry William Burton Wadsworth in 1895
  • Lizzie H. Varney of Winslow, Maine; inscribed at China, Maine, on March 28, 1884.  Georgia's cousin

Among the inscribers were teachers Caddie F. and L. S. Gould, who each inscribed the right of the two sets of facing pages.

If you have corrections and/or information to share on any of the people mentioned, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1880-1882 Autograph Album of Laura Susan (Robertson) Barrows, a Native of Minot, Maine, who was Teaching the Winter Term in District 13 at Brunswick, Maine

1880-1882 autograph album started by Laura Susan (Robertson) Barrows (1840-1922), who was teaching in the District 13 School at Brunswick, Maine, in the winter of 1880-1881.

Laura, a native of Minot, Maine, was the wife of Samuel Conant Barrows; the family was living in Otisfield, Maine, at the time. Whether the whole family went to Brunswick for that time frame, I don't know.

Laura inscribed the page below.

The album measures approximately 5" by 3" and contains the sentiments of 31 of Laura's students, relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of all of the inscribers appears at the end of this post.

Laura Susan Robertson was born 7 March 1840 at Minot, Maine, the daughter of Osgood Robertson and Louisa (Noyes) Robertson.  Louisa had passed away by the time of this autograph album but  Osgood inscribed the left page shown below.

On December 31, 1866, Laura Susan Robertson of Minot, Maine, and Samuel C. Barrows of Hebron, Maine, indicated their intention to marry to the town clerk of Minot, Maine. If I'm reading the day correctly, they were married on January 12, 1867 by L. P. Varney, minister of the Baptist Church, presumably Rev. Leander Pratt Gurney (1817-1895)

Laura and Samuel moved to Otisfield, Maine to raise their family.  Their daughter Lucy C. Barrows inscribed a page while at Otisfield; Lucy indicated she was 8 years old in 1881.

Laura's father Osgood Robertson was a native of Brunswick, Maine; relatives there may have told Laura of the teaching opportunity in the Winter of 1880-1881 and may have offered her a place to stay.

Laura Susan (Robertson) Barrows (1840-1922) and Samuel Conant Barrows (1838-1915) are buried in the Elmwood Cemetery in Otisfield, Maine, with daughter Lucy C. Barrows (1872-1898).

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Lura Linn Talbot (1865-1919) was born 26 October 1865 at Wilton, Maine, the daughter of Charles Johnson Talbot (1826-1884) and Almira Ann (Colby) Smith Talbot (1831-1898).  Lura's older half-brother, Archie Lee Talbot (1846-1932) inscribed a page in her album on March 20, 1880 at Lewiston, Maine.

Also inscribing a page in the album was Jennie Farnum (1865-1887), sister of Lura's future husband, Edwin Stanton Farnum (1862-1925).

Lura and Edwin married on 26 November 1891 at Wilton, Maine, where they would raise their family of several children. After Lura's death in 1919, Edwin married Edith Lowell in 1925, shortly before his death.
