1869-1871 Autograph Album of Elizabeth E. Dickerman, "Lizzie", of New Haven, Connecticut; connection to Wooster City, Ohio

Autograph album that was given to Elizabeth E. Dickerman, "Lizzie", of New Haven, Connecticut, by her father Chauncey Alling Dickerman on December 25, 1869.  The inscriptions run through 1871 in Connecticut and Ohio.  Sadly, Lizzie died in 1872.

The landscape-format album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 6-3/4" and contains the sentiments of over 30 of Lizzie's relatives and friends in Connecticut and Wooster City, Ohio, where her family appears to have had a connection.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to her Find a Grave memorial, which doesn't offer photographs or sources, Elizabeth Ella Dickerman was born May 27, 1848 at New Haven, Connecticut.  Other places show her middle name as Ella.  If a reader has a birth record, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Lizzie's parents were Chauncey Alling Dickerman and Nancy Sarah (Bronson) Dickerman.  In addition to the presentation page above, Chauncey inscribed another page at New Haven, Connecticut, on March 12, 1870.

Lizzie's mother Nancy did not inscribe a page, but her parents, William A. Bronson and Frances Adeline (Howell) Bronson of Orange, Connecticut, did.

Lizzie's brother Robert Charles Dickerman inscribed a page on January 27, 1870 and may have been the R. C. Dickerman who inscribed a page on November 19, 1870 at New Haven, Connecticut.

Lizzie's paternal aunt, Mary Ann (Dickerman) Beecher inscribed a page that faced a page inscribed by her future husband Daniel Treat Beecher.   Daniel inscribed another page in the album as well

A piece of cardstock with the name C. A. Dickerman of Wooster City, Ohio, and the numerous inscribers from Wooster City, Ohio, makes me wonder if the Dickerman family visited Ohio or moved there briefly or perhaps had earlier been involved with the Connecticut Western Reserve.  Perhaps a reader will have more information.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 60 of Josie's relatives, schoolmates, teachers and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

I found at least two women born Sarah Josephine Mudgett in Vermont during the plausible time frame
  • Sarah Josephine Mudgett, born November 25, 1846, daughter of Charles Mudgett and Laura D. (Hall) Mudgett.  This Sarah married Stephen Warren Butterfield about 1871.
  • Sarah Josephine Mudgett, born June 13, 1850, daughter of Robert Mudgett and Abbie (Emery) Mudgett.  This Sarah married Henry C. Birchmore in 1868 and William E. Jenkins in 1897.
I'm leaning toward the second choice, but would like to hear from readers.  A clue might be the two Mudgett cousins who inscribed pages with initials that I hope I've interpreted correctly:
  • R. C. Mudgett of Boston, Massachusetts
  • C. W. Mudgett of Summer Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

If you have a theory as to the identity of Sarah Josephine Mudgett, "Josie S. Mudgett", or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment for the benefit of fellow researchers.

1830s-1840s Autograph Album of Margaret N. Hoffman, presumably a Student at Teachers College at Ithaca, New York

1830s/1840s autograph album that belonged to Margaret N. Hoffman, whose name is printed on the front cover.  The person who sold me this album indicated that Margaret was from Caroline, New York, and was a student at Normal School at Ithaca, New York.

Several inscribers also mentioned the Western Reserve Teachers Seminary at Kirtland, Ohio in 1846; perhaps Margaret was a teacher there?

The album, which was published by J. C. Riker of New York, New York, in 1833, measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6" and contains several engravings interspersed throughout.  It also includes the sentiments of perhaps as many of 60 of Margaret's friends and schoolmates, although perhaps far less, as it appears that some people inscribed more than one page.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Coin Impressions

Overleaf pages inscribed by Asa Dearborn Lord and wife Elizabeth Watson (Russell) Lord, at Western Reserve Teachers Seminary at Kirtland, Ohio, in 1846:

Several Leggett sisters inscribed pages, some more than one.  Mariette S. Leggett inscribed the page below.

Emiline Rounseville of Caroline, New York, inscribed the page below in 1835.

Lydia P. Mott inscribed the page below and included consonants "found in an old Welsh Church under the ten commandments":

The page, below, was inscribed by two people, M.N.H. and S.A.  M.N.H. may have been the album owner Margaret N. Hoffman.

If you have information on the family of Margaret N. Hoffman, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1870s Autograph Album of Belle, presumably Student at Skowhegan High School at Skowhegan, Maine

1870s autograph album that belonged to "Belle", who was presumably a student at Skowhegan High School at Skowhegan, Maine, possibly in the Class of 1876 or earlier.

The album is unusual in that all of the inscriptions are written upside down, and as if the back cover were the front.  Because of that, it's possible that the inscriber on the last end paper of the album might be the album's owner, Belle Parlin of Bingham, Maine, who dated her page April 3, 1873.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 70 of Belle's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research and assuming that Belle Parlin was the album's owner - corrections and additions and alternate theories of Belle's identity requested:

According to a record in the Maine, Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection,  ca 1780-1980, Isabella Parlin, "Belle", was born April 24, 1856 and died June 21, 1923, with the married surname of Williams.  I believe Belle was born at Concord, Maine, the daughter of Ephraim Wood Parlin and Eveline (Leadbetter) Parlin.  See another post that features an 1864 document where Charles Grant sold livestock to Ephraim W. Parlin.

Belle had a sister, Helen R. Parlin, who inscribed a page in the album, on the page before [or after, using the strange format] her sister Belle.  Sadly, Helen died in 1879; she was then the wife of Dr. Fred G. Williams, a native of Athens, Maine.

Belle married her sister's widower, Dr. Fred G. Williams, at Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Maine, on October 11, 1881.   Fred died on July 14, 1916 and is buried in the Village Cemetery at Bingham, Maine, with Nellie and Belle.  I'm not sure if Dr. Williams had children with either of his wives.

If you have additions and/or corrections, or an alternate theory as to the identity of album owner "Belle", or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment for the benefit of fellow researchers.
