1880s Autograph Album of Susan E. Daly of Fresno, California

Autograph album with inscriptions acquired in the 1880s by Susan E. Daly, "Sue" or "Susie", of Fresno, California.

Susan wrote her name as Sue Daly on the lower right corner of the first end paper and as Susie Daly on the lower right corner of the title page, both shown below.

The album measures approximately 7-3/4" by nearly 5" and contains the sentiments of nearly 60 of Susan's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

A card tucked in the album has the names of the recipient Karol and the possible surname of the sender, Zalud.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Susan E. Daly was born about August 1865 in California, the daughter of Richard Henry Daly and Susan (Bedford) Daly.

Judge Daly was born in Virginia; records for Susan (Bedford) Daly give her birth state as South Carolina or Georgia.  The link below gives her birthplace as Augusta, Georgia.  Read more about the colorful character of Richard H. Daly here.

Two of Susan's brothers inscribed pages in her album.  James H. Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on May 23, 1881.

Susan's brother John Bedford Daly inscribed a page at Fresno, California, on January 4, 1882.

Susan's sister Virginia (Daly) Smith, "Jennie", inscribed a page on September 28, but she didn't write a year.  Jennie's husband Albert F. Smith inscribed the left facing page.

I believe the album owner Susan was the Susan E. Daly who married widower Rev. John James Nathaniel Kenney on October 14, 1909 at Fresno, California.   I didn't find any children from Rev. Kenney's marriage to Susan, but he did have some children from his first marriage.

Both Susan and Rev. Kenney died in 1929.  They're buried in the Mountain View Cemetery at Fresno, California, with Daly and Kenney relatives.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship relationship [and there may have been others]

  • Mary B.  Susie's cousin.  Could she have been Mary Bedford?
  • Lily Bedford; inscribed at Anderson, no state written, [but there was a Lily Bedford at Anderson, California], on October 10, 1882.  Sue's cousin
  • Olive McCarley; "your loving Aunty"; inscribed at Shingletown, California, on September 28, 1882.  She was Olive Ann (Bedford) McCarley, sister of Susie's mother Susan E. (Bedford) Daly.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1860s Autograph Album of Margaret Wright Anderson of Fayetteville, North Carolina

1860s autograph album that belonged to Maggie, presumably Margaret Wright Anderson of Fayetteville, North Carolina.  Maggie was given the album by her brother John Anderson.

The album measures approximately 7" by 5-3/4" and contains several full page engravings and the sentiments of over 50 of Maggie's friends from North Carolina and Georgia, many of whom joined in inscribing shared pages.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Several of the inscribers' names appear to have been rubbed out.  This may have been because Maggie didn't want a new beau to see an inscription from an old beau.  It's interesting, though, that one of these inscriptions in inscribed "To Domineering Maggie".

One inscriber from 1864, A.R., mentioned St. Mary's Hall, which may have been the school in New Jersey that many Southern young women attended.  Most, but not all, of the Southern students were escorted by staff to "the lines" when the Civil War broke out.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

According to information in an Anderson Bible, Margaret Wright Anderson was born in Cumberland County on February 25, 1848 and was baptized by the Rev. Mr. Buxton in the Episcopal Church on May 7, 1848.  Her brother John Huske Anderson, who gave her the album, was born April 26, 183
at Mobile, Alabama.  Their parents were William Jones Anderson and Elizabeth (Huske) Anderson.

Also in the Bible:  On December 9, 1869 at St. John's Church at Fayetteville, North Carolina, Margaret Wright Anderson married William Dougal McMillan by Rev. Joseph C. Huske.  Presumably the W. D. McMillan of Wilmington, North Carolina, who added his name to the center of a shared page on July 8, 1865 was Maggie's future husband William Dougal McMillan.

Maggie and William raised their family of, I believe, six children at Wilmington, North Carolina, where William was a physician.  Maggie died in 1923 and William in 1935.  They're buried in the Oakdale Cemetery at Wilmington, North Carolina, with children and other relatives.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

I haven't found a birth record but marriage and death records indicate that Isabel/Isabell/Isabelle/Isabella Hill Ackerman, "Belle", was born October 28, 1877 at Madison, Georgia, the daughter of Abram Kennedy Ackerman and his first wife Lydia Kennedy (Robertson) Ackerman.  Lydia died in 1893, and Abram subsequently married Emma Theobald in Ohio in 1896.

The "Papa" and "Father" who inscribed pages in Belle's album were perhaps her paternal grandfather, Andrew Jackson Ackerman, and her father, Abram Kennedy Ackerman, unless Abram inscribed the pages using both terms.  Belle's paternal grandfather, John Dennis Morris Robertson, had died in 1882.

Belle married twice:
  1. Glenn McBride, who died in 1904, with whom she had one child
  2. George Lewis Breitenbucher, with whom she had two children
Belle died in 1960 and is buried with her second husband in Crest Lawn Memorial Park at Atlanta, Georgia.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The album measures approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 36 of Annie's friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Annie Laura McMurray was born May 24, 1863 in Union County, North Carolina, the daughter of Joseph Walkup McMurray and his first wife, Sallie Howard, who died in 1871.  I believe that Annie had two full siblings, a sister and a brother, and two half-sisters from her father's second marriage to Julia Ann Little.

As noted above, many of the signers were Annie's fellow students at the Charlotte Female Institute.  Some of them mentioned the school's initials, as did Katie C. Johnston of Rock Hill, South Carolina, who inscribed her page on January 22, 1880.

And Hattie Avery of Morganton, North Carolina, who inscribed her page on February 2, 1880.  See the list of signers below for the names of more students.

On May 20, 1885, Annie married grocer James Osgood Andrew Craig, son of William Evans Craig and Margaret (Parke) Craig.  I believe Annie and James had two children, a daughter and a son.  James died in 1924 and Annie in 1926; they're buried at the Eastview Cemetery at Wadesboro, North Carolina.

1860-1885 Autograph Album of Nannie E. Robinson of Georgia and, Later, her niece Annie Lee Garner

Autograph album that was presented by a friend to Nannie E. Robinson at Christmas in 1860.  The album was apparently later taken over by Nannie's niece Annie Lee Garner.

The presentation page handwriting is very faint.  "This album was presented to Miss Nannie E. Robinson by a Friend on the 25th/December 1860".

The album is approximately 7" x 5-1/2" and contains the sentiments of about a dozen relatives and friends of Nannie E. Robinson and her niece Annie Lee Garner.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The album was printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by G. G. Evans and contains three engravings, though there may have been more at one time.  The frontispiece engraving is entitled "Our Pet", after the painting by H. Howard, R.A., and engraved by S. Davenport.  The small engraving on the title page is not credited.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Nannie E. Robinson was born August 13, 1845 at Tallapoosa, Georgia, the daughter of John and Gilliam Mary P. (Lavender) Robinson, who were born in North Carolina and Tennessee, respectively.  On April 8, 1869 at Atlanta, Georgia, Nannie married Henry Clay Pendleton, son of Joseph Holmes Pendleton and Sarah M. (Hundley) Pendleton.  Nannie and Henry eventually settled at Clarkston, Georgia; they had, possibly, 13 children.

At some point between the 1860s and the late 1870s, the album apparently passed into the ownership of Nannie's niece Annie Lee Garner, born about 1867, daughter of Nannie's sister Susan Edelia (Robinson) Garner and her husband Thomas Samford Garner.  On February 1, 1888, Annie Lee Garner married John Thomas Anderson.

Annie's sister Mary E. Garner signed a page.

Annie is described as one of the "Big 4" on a page with herself, W. R. Hoyt, Cornie Hoyt and E. P. McBurney.  I believe the Hoyts were brother and sister William Russell Hoyt and Cornelia Hoyt.  Cornie inscribed this page as the handwriting of her own page, signed on July 19, 1885, illustrates.

Interestingly, signer Leonard Perry Pattillo, who inscribed his page on October 28, 1884, also married an Annie Lee, but I believe she was a different Annie Lee, perhaps Annie Lee Becker or Booker.
