31 Photographs of the Barber Family of the Newbury, Vermont, area, and nearby New Hampshire, including some Relatives back in England

31 photographs found loose in an album, mostly pertaining to children and other relatives of Charles Barber (1839-1922), who emigrated from England to Vermont.  The photographs include two of Charles' father, William Barber (1798-1877)

The album was presumably owned by one of Charles' children.

A previous owner of the album removed the photographs but fortunately retained any identifications that appeared on the page below where the photographs were tucked in, as you can see in the photograph of Thomas William Barber (1875-1952), shown at top.

Not all of Charles' children followed him to Vermont; his father, a sister and other children stayed in England.

Reverse of the CDV above

The photographs, listed by location of studio, with photographs with no imprint at the end

  • Brother John - CDV of a young woman and a young man, with the man identified on the page the photo is tucked in as "Brother John"; the woman appears to be the same woman as in another CDV of John, his wife and their child.  The photo was taken by the M. Boak studio of Bridlington Quay, Driffield & Malton.  He appears to be the same "John" in another photo. Possibly John Barber (abt 1865-1933), who stayed in England.

1872 Diary of John Webster Davis (1861-1930) of Fairlee, Vermont

Small 1872 diary kept by John Webster Davis (1861-1930) of Fairlee, Vermont, son of Benjamin Webster Davis (1816-1887) and his second wife Susan Adelaide (Young) Davis (1833-1907).

See another post that features the 1867+ diary of John's father, Benjamin Webster Davis.  Whereas Benjamin's entries are brief, John's entries give more detail on the staggering amount of work they did on a daily basis.

John's days were filled with work on the farm and in the woodlot, harvesting ice, keeping the varmints in check, with a few stretches for school, skating and palling around.

John's entry for Saturday, January 20, below: How pleasant is saturday night when I have tried all the week to be good, not spoken a word that is cross and pleased everyone that I could.

John lapsed in his diary keeping by the end of June but did make an entry on December 27, 1872 to mark the death of his great uncle Absalom Davis (1800-1872).

The January 10, 1872 entry notes 6th birthday of John's sister Mary Susan Davis (1866-1917)

John Webster Davis was born 11 July 1861 at Fairlee, Vermont, son of Benjamin Webster Davis (1816-1887) and his second wife Susan Adelaide (Young) Davis (1833-1907).

I didn't find a marriage record for John or any children for him. It appears that he farmed but also did work as a land cruiser or timber surveyor, and that was his occupation at the time of his death.

He spent his life in Fairlee, Vermont and died at the Cottage Hospital in Haverhill, New Hampshire, on 5 December 1930, after a short stay.

People mentioned in the diary - some of them multiples of times - if you notice a misinterpreted name or if you have a theory as to the identity of the person named, please leave a comment.

1867+ Diary of farmer Benjamin Webster Davis (1816-1887) of Fairlee, Vermont

An 1867 diary, with entries also from later years, that was kept by Benjamin Webster Davis (1816-1887), a farmer in Fairlee, Vermont.

Another post features the 1872 diary of Benjamin's son John Webster Davis (1861-1930).  John's diary gives further details into his father's labors of farming, logging, ice harvesting and trading. John, then eleven, was no slouch either.

Benjamin's diary includes entries about his dealings with customers and other farmers, including the services of his bull to others. He was also apparently involved with taxation issues as at least two entries include his time spent in preparing town taxes. One page, shown near the end of this post, lists the school taxes owed by himself and neighbors.

Benjamin was married twice:
  1. Mary (Holman) Davis (1826-1859) - I didn't find a record for children
  2. Susan Adelaide (Young) Davis (1833-1907) - at least four children; John Webster Davis and Mary Susan Davis already mentioned and a subsequent son and daughter

The BWD scrawled on the inside cover below may have been done at some point by one of Benjamin's children; his daughter Mary Susan Davis (1866-1917) scribbled and wrote entries in other places throughout at a later time, presumably around 1878, as an image farther below notes.

John was a man of few words, it appears, but the entry of Tuesday, January 8, 1867 was particularly poignant. He recorded the death of his father, Charles Davis (abt 1782-1867) and mentioned the earlier death of his mother Sarah (Kelley) Davis (1788-1864), "Sally".

Benjamin took an interest in court cases, as evidenced by the page below.

Below, an example of an entry made by Benjamin's daughter Mary Susan Davis (1866-1917) in 1878:

Nothing on reverse.

Note: 1921 was the year before Dover, on the south side of the Piscataquis River, merged with its neighbor Foxcroft, on the north side, to form Dover-Foxcroft.

Dr. Harvey Clifford Bundy (1890-1979) was a Vermont native who became chief surgeon and physician for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. He married twice:

Dr. Bundy and his first wife are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Milo, Maine, with their daughter and her husband.

W. H. Towne may have been William Harriman Towne (1880-1952), a farmer in adjacent Sebec, whose mailing address may have been Dover.

If you have corrections and information to share, or if you have a different identity for W. H. Towne, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

Lines Written By Judge Horace Strickland of Bradford, Vermont, upon the Death of his Wife Susan H. (Baldwin) Strickland in 1874

Paper, about 8" b y 5", found unaccompanied by other items, which contains lines written by Judge Horace Strickland (1801-1884) upon the death of his wife Susan H. (Baldwin) Strickland (1802-1874).

The Stricklands lived in Bradford, Vermont.

The paper is more yellow than it appears above, as it was scanned while contained within an archival sleeve.

Transcription:

The following lines were found among the papers of the late Judge H Stricland of Bradford Vt and were evidently written after the death of his wife

'Fairwell', since nevermore for thee
The sun comes up o'er eastern skies
Less bright henceforth shall sunshine be
To some fond hearts and saddened eyes.

There are who for thy last long sleep
Shall sleep as sweetly nevermore.
Shall weep because thou canst not weep
And grieve that all they griefs are o'er.

Sad thrift of love: the loving breast
On which the aching heart was thrown
Gave up the weary head to rest
But kept the aching for its own."

Horace Bradford was a foundry owner, a Town Clerk, a State Representative and Side Judge of Orange County, Vermont. He and Susan had two daughters
  1. Charlotte taught at Abbott Academy in Andover, Massachusetts
  2. Lucy Ann married Charles B. Botsford, a Boston merchant

1894 Photograph of the Minckler family of Grand Isle, Vermont and Worcester, Massachusetts, on a Visit to Old Orchard, Maine

1894 photograph of members of the Minckler family of Grand Isle, Vermont and Worcester, Massachusetts, on an outing to Old Orchard, Maine (or photographed against a backdrop of same).

The photograph was taken by the Chamberlain studio of Medfield, Massachusetts, either on location or with that possible backdrop.

Names:
  • Addie Hill (apparently the mother of the person making the identifications)
  • Marguerite
  • Viola Minckler
  • Laura Minckler
  • Lincoln Minckler

From brief online research, it appears these people were 4 Minckler siblings, one of whom was Addie (Minckler) Hill and her daughter Marguerite.

If you have information to share on the Minckler and Hill families, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Cabinet Photograph of Menetta Abigail (Given) Purinton, first Wife of Holman Greene Purinton of Maine, New Hampshire and Chicago, Illinois

Cabinet photograph of Minnetta Abigail (Given) Purinton, first wife of Civil War veteran Major Holman Greene Purinton, a native of Bowdoin, Maine. The photograph was taken at the Stevens studio in Chicago, Illinois, where the couple lived.

The reverse contains the identification: "Mrs. Holman Purinton (The first), Minetta Given married Holman 1868".

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Mennetta Abigail (Given) Purinton (about 1850-1898) was born in either Vermont or New Hampshire, the daughter of school teacher Humphrey Given and Jane S. (Kincaid) Purinton, both natives of Brunswick, Maine.  The 1860 Census shows the Given family at Lewiston, Maine, with "Abbie M.", age 9; Humphrey was working as a factory operative.

Menetta and Holman Greene Purinton, a native of Bowdoin, Maine, and a Civil War veteran, made known their Intention to Marry at Lewiston, Maine, on 11 February 1868 and married shortly thereafter.

By 1870, Menetta and Holman were living in Dover, New Hampshire. At some point, they moved to Chicago, Illinois. Menetta died in 1898 and is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.

Holman wrote about the Knights Templar in 1887 - Knights Templars tactics, double and single rank: Including tactics for asylum and council chamber.

Cabinet Photograph of William Perkins Andrus (1833-1893) of Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, North Dakota

Cabinet photograph taken by the Funk & Klauer studio of Bloomington, Illinois, of an older man identified as W. P. Andrus, with further identification as follows:

From the clues above, his identity can be established as William Perkins Andrus (1833-1893), son of Elisha Shepherd Andrus and Lavinia (Locke) Andrus, natives of Vermont and Maine, respectively.

William was born in Pennsylvania and lived in early years in New York and later years in Ontario and North Dakota. He married twice:
  1. Susan Maria Curtis, with whom he had two children; they apparently divorced or separated
  2. Maria Andrus, his cousin, with whom he had the children listed above
William, his two wives and his children are discussed in some detail, starting on page 163, in the book Elisha S. and Lavina (Locke) Andrus their ancestors and descendants. There's also a rather unflattering account of William and his first wife, hopefully not true or not completely so.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
