Tintypes of Florence Pavord; Georgie Jamison; Florrie Brown & May Whitcraft; Presumably Connected to Wilmington, Delaware

Two tintypes of two women each, one of Florence Pavord and Georgie Jamison, and the other of Florrie Brown and May Whitcraft.   Women of these names, all born around 1880, lived at or near Wilmington, Delaware.

Florence and Georgie are younger than Florrie and May.  It's possible that Florence Pavord and Florrie Brown are the same person at different stages in life, as a Florence E. N. Pavord, born about 1879, married George Elliot Brown on January 26, 1898 at Wilmington, Delaware.  This Florence was the daughter of Charles and Louisa Virginia (Semans or Lemans) Pavord.

Interestingly, I found an article in the August 16, 1894 issue of the Evening Journal of Wilmington, Delaware, where Charles and Louisa V. Pavord were accused of selling liquor without a license.

Note the maiden name of Georgie's mother, farther below.  Perhaps Semans and Seamans were variants of the same surname, with Florence and Georgie possibly cousins.

The tintype itself:

A tintype of Florrie Brown and May Whitcraft; if Florrie was Florence E.  N. Pavoid, this tintype was taken in a later era:

  • Georgia Jamison, born about 1880 at Elkton, Maryland, the daughter of Charles G. and Katy (Seaman) Jamison.  Georgia married Henry Lynch, son of William and Honora (Flynn) Lynch on March 26, 1898 at Wilmington, Delaware.
  • Mary Whitcraft was born about 1878 in Delaware, the daughter of James Alexander Whitcraft and Kate C. (Wells) Whitcraft.  This Mary, who might have gone by the nickname May, was a dressmaker and stenographer at Wilmington, Delaware.  As late as 1940, she was still at Wilmington, Delaware and living with her brother Blanchard Whitcraft.

Cabinet Photograph of Henry Warner; taken by the Knight Studio of Elkton, Maryland

Cabinet photograph of a child and an elderly man identified on the reverse as "Uncle Henry Warner".  The photograph was taken by the J. W. Knight studio of 145 East Maine Street, Elkton, Maryland.

I found several possibilities for Henry Warner in the area of Elkton, which is near the borders of Pennsylvania and Delaware.  If you have a theory as to which Henry Warner he was, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Real Photo Postcard of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Olson of Wilmington, Delaware, at Atlantic City

Real Photo Postcard of a middle-aged couple identified as Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Olson of Wilmington, Delaware.

A name mentioned on the reverse is presumably the intended recipient, though the card was never mailed. The name might be E. H. Meriam or Marvin or ?  If you can perceive a surname, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

The couple pictured might have been John A. Olsen and wife Matilda (Olm or Pierson or Peterson) Olsen, who were born in Sweden about October 1859 and about April 1853 respectively.  They were living at Wilmington, Delaware at the time of the enumeration of the 1900 Federal Census and had three daughters and two sons in the household:
  1. Alma Matilda Olson
  2. Anna Augusta Olson
  3. Esther Elizabeth Olson
  4. Axell Imanual Olson
  5. Edwin A. Olson
By 1900, they had lost a son, Elmer David Olson, and perhaps other children.

If you have more information on John A. and Matilda Olson of Wilmington, Delaware, or if you believe that the couple is another Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Olson, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s Autograph Album of Azariah Rettenhouse Goodwin of Kelton, Pennsylvania, a Student at New London Academy

1880s autograph album of Azariah Rettenhouse Goodwin, "Ezzie", of Kelton, Pennsylvania, a student at New London Academy at New London, Pennsylvania.

A label on the inside front cover indicates that the album was purchased at J. W. Bowman, Bookseller, Stationer and Music Dealer, of Oxford, Pennsylvania,

The album is approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 100 of Azariah's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

New London Academy was originally founded in 1743 by Reverend Francis Allison, at New London, Pennsyslvania, but was moved to Newark, Delaware, where it became the foundation for Delaware College.  About 1866, an academy was again founded at New London, Pennsylvania, with Reverend James Love Mackey, a former missionary to Africa, as principal.  Read more about this second academy here.  Interestingly, a D. Mackey signed a page in Azardiah's album.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Azariah Rettenhouse Goodwin was born 16 July 1863, presumably in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jesse and Sarah Ann (Timanus) Goodwin.  His paternal grandparents were Richard and Elizabeth (Heston) Goodwin.  His maternal grandparents were George and Sarah Timanus.

Azariah's two brothers, George and Richard, died before their first birthday.  Sister Lizzie signed a page in the album on March 10, 1880.  In 1895, she would marry John Wesley Dance.

Several signers expressed a cousin relationship with Azariah, and there were other signers with the same surnames who were likely also relatives.  The signers who expressed a cousin relationship:
  • Martha of Wilmington, Delaware, who signed a page on September 14, 1880
  • Sallie Cheyney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who signed a page on September 7, 1880
  • Will S. Cloud of Wilmington [no state written, but presumably Delaware], who signed a page on November 23, 1880
  • Emily Goodwin, who signed a page on March 26, 1881
  • Ida J. Terry, signed at Lincoln [no state written], on April 18, 1881
Sadly, Azardiah died before his time, on 10 May 1891.  I couldn't find a marriage record for him.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s-1905 Autograph Album of Caroline Lydia (Greene) Crandall of Mystic, Connecticut

1880s-1905 autograph album of Caroline Lydia (Greene) Crandall of Mystic, Connecticut.

See another post that features the 1870s autograph album of Caroline's son Stiles Ashbel Crandall, compiled mostly while he was a student at Connecticut Literary Institute.  Several people signed pages in both albums.

The album is approximately 8" x 6" and contains the sentiments of 68 of Caroline's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.  Caroline was a middle-aged woman while these autographs were collected, which fact might explain why numerous pages are signed by parents and their children.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Caroline Lydia (Greene) Crandall was born 18 February 1826 at Stonington, Connecticut, the daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Bolles) Greene.  On 1 January 1884, at Ledyard, Connecticut, Caroline married Stiles Woodbridge Crandall, son of Wells and Sarah (Woodbridge) Crandall.

The album came with a print of what appears to be a encased photograph of a husband wife, presumably Caroline Lydia (Green) Crandall and Stiles Woodbridge Crandall, but I can't be sure.

Caroline and Stiles had, I think, three children, a daughter Caroline Augusta Crandall, who died at about age 8; a son Ashbel Woodbridge Crandall, who died at about a year; and and the above-mentioned Stiles Ashbel Crandall, who lived a long and productive life.

Ashbel Stiles Crandall's two children, Mary Stoddard Crandall and Billings Francis Stoddard Crandall, signed pages in their grandmother's album, Mary in 1895 and Billings in 1894.

Caroline Lydia (Greene) Crandall died in 1912; her husband Stiles Woodbridge Crandall had predeceased her in 1906.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

One of the most interesting aspects of this album is the fact that several pages were shared by immediate families.  Among those was the page signed on July 27, 1884 by William J. Brown and wife Jennie A. (Denison) Brown of Mystic, Connecticut.  They wrote the name of their newborn daughter, Jennie Elizabeth Brown, born July 6, 1884.  William J. Brown was the son of James and Sophia E. (Crandall) Brown, who was a sister to Caroline's husband Stiles Woodbridge Crandall.

Another page featured the Watrous family Mystic, Connecticut: Albert Gallatin Watrous, his wife Susan Madilia (Lamphere) Watrous and their son George Arthur Watrous, who signed in 1882.

The Whiting family of Mystic, Connecticut, also signed a family page in 1882.  They were Nathan Palmer Whiting, his wife Mary Ann (Wheeler) Whiting and sons Nathan Palmer Whiting and Lewis Herbert Whiting.

1901 Graduation Photograph of Nathaniel Trull Ewer from Lowell Textile School at Lowell, Massachusetts

Note of June 27, 2014: this blog post has been edited as a result of new information provided by a reader's comment (see comments section.)

Photograph of a young man identified on the reverse as N. T. Ewer, who was Nathaniel Trull Ewer (1877-1935), taken by the studio of J. Powell of Lowell, Massachusetts.  Notations in the lower left front indicate that this was a 1901 graduation photograph from L.T.S., or Lowell Textile School.

From online research, hopefully correct: [corrections requested]

Nathaniel Trull Ewer was born 17 April 1877 at Reading, Massachusetts, the son of James Kendall Ewer and Emeline Holbrook (Trull) Ewer, who were born at Hyannis, Massachusetts, and Tewksbury, Massachusetts, respectively.

On 23 November 1904 at Boston, Massachusetts, Nathaniel married Lilian Mabel Swint, daughter of John Wendall Swint, Jr., and Idellia Strong Richardson, or "Delia".

By the time of the 1910 Census, Nathaniel and Mabel were living at Chester, Delaware, and had two children, son Kendall Swint Ewer and daughter Priscilla Swint Ewer.  Nathaniel was working as chemist at a dye company.

By 1920, the family was living at Springfield, Delaware, and there was another child in the family, son Nathaniel, Jr.  Nathaniel, Sr., was still working as a chemist at a dye company.

By 1930, the parents and two older children were living at Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.   Nathaniel, Sr., was shown as working as a chemist.  Nathaniel Jr., was also living at Swarthmore, and is described as a "Son", but he is listed on his own, on a different sheet.

Nathaniel Trull Ewer, Sr., received a patent in 1924 for a foam stablilizer.

While researching Nathaniel Trull, I came across several articles about a Nat Ewer and the Lucy Evelyn, the Harrington, Maine-built three-masted schooner that spent her final years as a gift shop at Beach Haven, New Jersey.  Small world!  I remember the late Norman Nelson of Machias, Maine, reminiscing about his experience sailing on the Lucy Evelyn to Cape Horn in 1934, when he was 16.  Many years later, while driving down the Atlantic coast, Norman happened to pass through Beach Haven and was thunderstruck to see the Lucy Evelyn there.

1913 RPPC of Captain Mathias Johnson leaving Eastport Maine for San Francisco in Gig Whaleboat

Interesting Real Photo Postcard: "Capt. Mathias Johnson leaves Eastport, Maine Sunday Aug. 3, 1913, in gig whaleboat "George Washington" for San Francisco, California via Panama Canal."

Mathias Johnson was living at 222 Second Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, when he set out on his adventure.  According to one newspaper article, his parents were Danish.  Some newspaper articles:
  • August 28, 1913, The Day of New London, Connecticut - troubles off Marblehead, Massachusetts
  • September 6, 1913, The Day of New London, Connecticut - how he lost his first George Washington, in the September 6, 1913 issue of The Day, published at New London, Connecticut.
  • October 3, 1913, The Delaware Pilot - the journey as far as Maryland
  • October 20, 1913, The Wilmington Dispatch [North Carolina] - informative article about Captain Johnson and his adventure.  Search the page for his name, and the text will appear at the bottom.
  • October 24, 1913, The Gastonia Gazette [North Carolina]
  • March 28, 1917, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle - trouble for Mathias whose boat was discovered full of explosives, which police initially feared were to blow up Fort Totten, but Mathias explained were used in his wrecking business.
I don't know if Captain Johnson ever succeeded in piloting his open boat through the Panama Canal.  If you have additional information, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
