Obituary of Daniel A. Ferguson of St. Paul, Minnesota, Husband of Francis (Fletcher) Ferguson (Daughter of Ira Fletcher of Skowhegan, Maine)

Obituary of Daniel A. Ferguson, husband of Frances (Fletcher) Ferguson.

The clipping presumably appeared in a St. Paul, Minnesota, newspaper and was either sent back to Maine or was perhaps reprinted in a paper in Skowhegan, Maine.

A transcription appears at the end of this post.

Handwriting on the clipping:
  1. Detroit, Mich [where Frances (Fletcher) Ferguson spent part of her childhood]
  2. Mrs. Ferguson was Miss Francis Fletcher, daughter of Ira Fletcher
The obituary is pasted in a scrapbook of items mostly with a connection to the area encompassing Dexter, Maine, and Skowhegan, Maine.  I believe the connection here is that Daniel A. Ferguson's wife, Frances (Fletcher) Ferguson, was the daughter of a Skowhegan area native, [John] Ira Fletcher, who moved to New York and then to Detroit, Michigan, and may be the Ira Fletcher (1821-1882) buried in Skowhegan.

Daniel A. Ferguson was a native of Scotland, born about 1855. Frances (Fletcher) Ferguson was born about 1848 in New York, the daughter of Ira Fletcher and wife Elizabeth (possibly Gill) Fletcher.  It appears Daniel and Frances lived first in Detroit, Michigan, and then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Frances may have been the Frances Ferguson who died in Ramsey County, Minnesota in 1933.

Does the article shown below, which was reprinted from a Providence, Rhode Island newspaper in The Western Star of Lebanon, Ohio, issue of 24 August 1882, refer to Frances' father Ira Fletcher? If the same Ira, what happened to his family in Michigan?  He was there with wife Elizabeth as late as the 1880, as recorded in the US Census of that year.  Perhaps Elizabeth died in the interim, and Ira's life was upended.

Daniel A. Ferguson Dead.
Death has again robbed Riverview of one of its old settlers. Daniel Ferguson passed away at the family residence, 303 East Winifred Street last Sunday. The family had lived in this same residence for over a quarter of a century, and are among our most highly respected citizens. He was connected with one of the Express Companies, and served faithfully until the time of his retirement. "Dan", as his friends were wont to style him, was a lovable fellow, and had many friends. The writer knew him quite intimately for many years, and enjoyed his acquaintance and friendship all that time, and joins a lot of other friends in sympathy to the bereaved family.  Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson were faithful members of the Old Clinton M. E. Church which later merged with the King Street M. E. Church in the new St. Paul's Church on George Street, from which the funeral of Mr. Ferguson was held last Tuesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Hall. The funeral was quite largely attended his old friends assembling to do honor to the high esteem in which he was held. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Frances Ferguson, and three sons and one daughter: D. Ira, Allen F. and Arthur S. Ferguson, and Mrs. R. L. Miles. Two brothers and two sisters also survive. Thus one by one they go from us, but our memories are richer for having known and touched elbows with these old faithful souls.

Photographs and Birthday Book from the Dunham Family, their In-laws and Friends, mostly from Piscataquis County, Maine; Michigan & Wisconsin

Several photographs and a birthday book that appear to pertain to the Dunham family of Sebec, Maine, including family members who moved to Michigan and Wisconsin, and friends from Sebec and Dover-Foxcroft and around Maine.

The birthday book does not list the birthdays of Effie Idella (Dunham) Merrill (1869-1926) or her husband William True Merrill (1862-1933), leading me to wonder if Effie might have been the original owner of the book and photo collection. She was the daughter of Levi Bearce Dunham (1828-1908) and Ann C. (Dow) Dunham (1830-1895) of the Foxcroft section of what is now Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

Surnames mentioned on the photographs and in the birthday entries:

Dunham (13)Harlow (2)Smith

Above, a man identified on the reverse as Will Dunham.  He was William Herbert Dunham, born in Sebec, Maine, in 1866, son of Levi Bearce Dunham (1828-1908) and Ann C. (Dow) Dunham (1830-1895).

The reverse of the photograph suggests that these two young women might be William Herbert Dunham's sisters, Angeline (Dunham) Packard (1863-1920), "Angie" and Effie Idella (Dunham) Merrill (1869-1926).  However, the faint studio imprint seems to indicate Wisconsin, which might make them Washburn sisters or cousins or mother and daughter.  Hopefully a reader with identified family photographs will weigh in.  Perhaps Angie and Effie were on a visit to their Washburn relatives.

The birthday book contains two obituaries:

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Edith E. Hoffman was born July 10, 1874, either at Burtchville, Michigan, according to her marriage record, or Niagara, New York, according to her death record.  It would seem that the marriage record would be more credible.  Edith was the daughter of Luther Newton Hoffman and Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman, both New York natives.

Luther Newton Hoffman inscribed a page in his daughter's album on January 10, 1886, as "Your Father".

The Effie Hoffman who inscribed a page at Lakeport, Michigan, on August 12, 1884 may have been Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman.

Other relatives who inscribed pages in Edith's album [and there were likely more who did not express a kinship] included her paternal grandmother, her maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins:
  • Ida; inscribed on November 2, 1894.  Edith's cousin.  Perhaps Ida C. Lamb, daughter of Isaac Mathias Lamb and Annette (Hoffman) Lamb, who was a sister to Edith's father Luther Newton Hoffman.
  • Uncle Will; possibly William H. Duncan, who was a brother to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman.
  • Jessie of Blaine, Michigan; inscribed on July 5, 1886.  Edith's cousin.  Perhaps Jessie Estella Hamlin, daughter of Frank Andrew Hamlin and Ida Mariah (Hoffman) Hamlin, who was a sister to Edith's father Luther Newton Hoffman.
  • Alta B. Cole of Jeddo, Michigan; inscribed on June 17, 1891.  Edith's cousin.  She was the daughter of Isaac Cole and Emma (Duncan) Cole, who was a sister to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman
  • E. Duncan Cole of Lakeport, Michigan; inscribed in August 1884.  Perhaps Emma (Duncan) Cole, who was a sister to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Cole
  • Isaac Cole of Lakeport, Michigan; inscribed in August 1884.  Husband of Emma (Duncan) Cole, who was a sister to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Cole
  • Leon Cole; inscribed on March 19, 1893.  Edith's cousin Leon P. Cole, son of Isaac Cole and Emma (Duncan) Cole, who was a sister to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman
  • Lester D. Cole of Jeddo, Michigan; inscribed on March 17, 1893.  Edith's cousin, who was the son of Isaac Cole and Emma (Duncan) Cole, who was a sister to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman.
  • Charles M. Duncan of Plymouth, Michigan; inscribed on May 19, 1891.  Edith's cousin, perhaps the son of Phoebe (Perry) Duncan and William H. Duncan, who was a brother to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman
  • G. M. Duncan, "your Uncle"; of Hess Road, New York; inscribed on November 5, 1893.  Gilbert Mooney Duncan, who was a brother to Edith's mother Mary Effie (Duncan) Hoffman.  Shared the page with his wife Mary Ann (Root) Duncan.

  • Kittie Mead of Saginaw City, Michigan; inscribed at Lakeport, Michigan, on September 12, 1886.  Edith's cousin.  Possibly Kittie Clara Mead, daughter of George F. Mead and Orpha Marilla (Stark) Mead.  Presumably related to Edith through their shared Ferguson ancestors.
  • Mattie E. Stark of Bay City, Michigan; inscribed at Lakeport, Michigan, on September 12, 1886.  Edith's cousin, presumably related to her through shared Ferguson ancestors.  Perhaps Martha Edgerton Stark, daughter of Helon Mead Stark and Rebecca Kilbourn

1880s Autograph Album of Franklin Washington Lincoln Pratt, "Frank", of Walled Lake, Michigan

Autograph album with inscriptions in the 1880s that belonged to Franklin Washington Lincoln Pratt, "Frank", of Walled Lake, Michigan.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Franklin Washington Lincoln Pratt, "Frank", was born February 23, 1868 at Detroit, Michigan, the son of Martin Van Buren Pratt and Isabella (Miller) Pratt.  The Isabella Pratt who inscribed a page in Frank's album on February 27, 1881, was presumably Frank's mother, although the handwriting looks to be that an older person.

I believe that George's paternal grandparents were Samuel Pratt and Lucy (Hitchcock) Pratt, who each inscribed pages in the album.  Lucy inscribed her page at West Sumpter, Michigan, and noted that she was almost 83 years old.

Pratt and other relatives who inscribed pages: [and there were probably more who didn't express a kinship]
    • Auntie Bird; inscribed on July 11, 1881.  Possibly Harriet (Pratt) Bird, a sister to Frank's father Martin Van Buren Pratt.
    • Joseph H. Bird of West Sumpter, Michigan; presumably Frank's cousin Joseph Hiram Bird, son of Hiram Bird and Harriet (Pratt) Bird, who was a sister to Frank's father Martin Van Buren Bird.
    • Mrs. Emily Bird; presumably Emily (Sutfin) Bird, wife of Frank's cousin, inscriber Joseph Hiram Bird.
    • Elvira Bradshaw; inscribed on July 3, 1881.  Frank's cousin
    • Hattie Bradshaw; inscribed at West Sumpter, Michigan, on July 2, 1881.  Frank's cousin
    • Nellie Bruce; Frank's cousin
    • Frank Farrington; Frank's cousin
    • George Hunt; Frank's cousin
    • Alto Jones; Frank's cousin
    • Dellie Miller; inscribed on July 4, 1881.  Frank's cousin
    • A. Pratt, Jr.
    • Annie Pratt; inscribed on April 10, 1881.  Frank's sister Mary Anna Pratt
    • Ida; inscribed on February 23, 1881.  Frank's sister Ida Pratt.
    • Sammie Pratt; inscribed on March 9, 1881.  Frank's brother Samuel Pratt

Two of Frank's teachers inscribed pages.  Lydia G. Courter; inscribed a page at Farmington, Michigan, on June 4, 1882.

Maud Green of Farmington, Michigan; inscribed on April 11, 1881.

On January 24, 1894 at Novi, Michigan, Franklin Washington Lincoln Pratt married dress maker Duana Charlotte Abbey, daughter of Walter Abbey and Lucinda (Austin) Abbey.   Frank and his wife lived in various places in Oakland County, Michigan.   Frank died in 1948; his death record mentions that he was married, so Duana presumably outlived him.    I don't know where they are buried.
