c1900 Photograph of Jimmy Raeish, "friend of Carl Ross"; by a studio in Calais, Maine

c1900 photograph of a young man identified as "Jimmy Raeish, friend of Carl Ross". The photograph was taken at the studio of H. D. McKay of Main Street, Calais, Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

James Albert Raeish (1884-1929) was born  in Auburn, New York, son of Albert Raeish and Ada (Lyon) Raeish. The 1900 Federal Census of Calais, Maine, shows that James was living there with his mother and father, who was working as an electrician.

In 1910 in Oregon, James, by then an attorney, married Melva Jane Johnson, a native of Saint John, New Brunswick.  She was the daughter of Margaret Gertrude (MacLellan) and John M. Johnson, who moved the family to Calais, after Margaret's death.

Carl Ross was presumably Carl Wilbur Ross (1883-1950), a native of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, across the St. Croix River from Calais, and son of Henry Butler Ross and Lilia Miranda (Bridges) Ross.  In 1908 in Massachusetts, Carl married Eva Celeste Fraser, also a New Brunswick native, daughter of John A. Fraser and Florence Melva (MacLellan) Fraser.  Carl and Eva then moved to Portland, Oregon.

The MacLellan connection between Melva and Eva presumably explains how James and Melva came to meet.

Melva died in 1950 in California. It appears that James married twice after that. He died in 1974 in Alameda, California.

If you have information on any of these people, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1893 Photograph of a Young Man IDed on the Reverse as Frank Farrington of Lewiston, Maine

Photograph, dated March 26, 1893, of a young man identified on the reverse as Frank Farrington of Lewiston, Maine. Photo by the Curtis & Ross studio of Lewiston, Maine.

He may have been the Frank P. Farrington (1870-1939) who was born 19 July 1870 at Alton, Maine, son of Jesse Farrington and Julia Abigail (Weymouth) Farrington. Frank married Grace J. Railey [or Bailey] in Lewiston, Maine, in 1893. This Frank later moved to Oregon, where he died in 1939. Frank and Grace divorced after 1900, and Frank subsequently married Ellen L. Van Patten, who is shown as his wife in the 1910 Census of Salem, Oregon.

If you have a theory as to the identity of the Frank Farrington depicted in the photograph, where he is Frank P. Farrington or not, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

CDV of young Arthur Hill and older sister Bertha Hill (whose married name would be Wright); Hillsboro, Oregon, studio

Carte de Visite of two young siblings; taken by the J. Z. Foulk studio of Hillsboro, Oregon; to be given to "Grandpa"
  • Bertha Hill, who, according to the identification on the reverse, married a Mr. Wright
  • Arthur Hill

There was a Bertha May Hill (1874-1951), but her younger brothers were named Ansel Benjamin Hill (1875-1957) and Morton Vernon Hill (1877-1936), not Arthur. Interestingly, rather than 1875, Arthur Benjamin Hill gave his birth date as 21 October 1880 on his World War II draft registration card. If that is correct, perhaps there was a brother named Arthur in between Bertha and Ansel, who did not survive.

Bertha May Hill (1874-1951) married Charles Paul Wright in 1892.

If you have a theory as to the identities of Bertha Hill, who married a Mr. Wright, and Bertha's younger brother Arthur Hill, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1878-1895 Autograph Album of Annie E. Phillips of Amity, Oregon; Before and After Marriage to Frank Bailey Ferguson

Autograph album presented to Annie Phillips of Amity, Oregon, by her brother R. W. Phillips at Christmas, December 25, 1878.

The album continues through Annie's time at St. Helen's Hall at Portland, Oregon, and until August 16, 1895, when Annie, her husband Frank Bailey Ferguson and their two children are named on pages, although it appears that Frank inscribed the pages for his very young children.

St. Helen's Hall, now known as Oregon Episcopal School, was founded in 1869 at Portland, Oregon, by Rev. Wistar Morris and his wife Hannah (Rodney) Morris; Hannah's sister Mary and three other women, all of whom had traveled to Oregon for the purpose of opening a school.  I read that the group was so impressed with the sight of Mount St. Helen's that they decided on that name for their school.

Many students at St. Helen's Hall inscribed pages in Annie's album in 1880 and 1881, including Fannie Spiegel, who inscribed her page on February 22, 1880.

The album measures approximately 4" by 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 35 of Annie's relatives, friends and fellow students at St. Helen's Hall.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Annie's Find-a-Grave memorial indicates that she was born August 1, 1863 and died April 30, 1909.  Her parents were Richard Wesley Phillips, a native of Alabama, who had come to Oregon by way of Louisiana, and Mary S. Hawley [Sophia or Sophronia], a native of Idaho.

Annie's father Richard Wesley Phillips inscribed the last page in her album and wrote his inscription upside down.  He dated his page December 25 but didn't give a year; presumably it was 1878, the year Annie received the album from her brother Richard Wesley Phillips, Jr..  Annie's mother, Sarah S. (Hawley) Phillips had died a few years before Annie received the album.

Read more about Richard Wesley Phillips and his family, starting on page 596 in the Portrait and Biographical Record of the Willamette Valley, Oregon, published in 1903 by Chapman Publishing Company of Chicago.

On May 15, 1890 in Yamhill County, Oregon, Annie E. Phillips married Franklin Bailey Ferguson.  They had, I believe, two children.  Frank inscribed a page when he apparently had to leave his wife and children for a time.

The following pages, in page order, but they don't appear consecutively, inscribed on August 16, 1895, bear the names of Frank, Annie and their children Bennie and Mary, who would not have been able to inscribe the pages themselves in 1895.  Judging from the handwriting, it was probably Frank who inscribed their pages, perhaps Annie's as well.

Annie E. (Phillips) Ferguson died in 1909 at Amity, Oregon, and is buried there in the Amity Cemetery.  Frank married again and is buried with wife Blanche in the Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum at Salem, Oregon.  He died in 1931.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

c1909 Photograph of Brothers Louis Edmond White and Lawrence Bartlett White, Then of Fargo, North Dakota

c1909 photograph of brothers identified on the reverse, from right to left, as Louis Edmond White, age 6 years and 6 months, and Lawrence Bartlett White, age 2 years and 9 months, taken while the family was living at Fargo, North Dakota.

Their parents, Horace L. White and Grace Rae (Jackson) White had married at Wiscasset, Maine, on April 4, 1901.  According to their marriage record, Horace was then living at Burlington, Vermont, and working as a teacher; Grace was living with her parents at Wiscasset, Maine, and working as a compositor.  Interestingly, the marriage record also reveals that the ceremony was performed by Grace's father.

Horace was born March 20, 1870 at Portland, Maine, son of William White and Ann Augusta (Oliver) White.  Grace was born September 28, 1873 at Lincolnville, Maine, daughter of Rev. William Bartlett Jackson and Ellen Adelaide (Ward) Jackson.

Louis Edmond White was born in 1903 and Lawrence in 1907, both at Burlington, Vermont.  By 1910, the family, including Horace's father William, were living at Fargo, North Dakota, where Horace was a chemistry professor.  By 1920, the family, including William, had moved to Los Angeles, California, where the Census showed Horace as a chemistry teacher.

Horace died in 1925 and Grace in 1949, both in California.

I looked briefly to see if Grace Rae (Jackson) White was related to Maine war hero Dr. Sumner Waldron Jackson, "Doctor to the Resistance", but apparently not, at least not closely.

Not surprisingly, given their family history, Louis Edmond White became a minister in Oregon and Lawrence Bartlett White an educator in California.

1870s-1913 Autograph Album of Jennie P. Bamford of Fayette, Maine, with some Inscriptions to her Mother Nancy Quimby (Bean) Bamford

Autograph album started in February 1876 by Jennie P. Bamford of Fayette, Maine.

Three or more of the later autographs in the album, from the early 1900s, were inscribed to "Grammy", who was Jennie's mother Nancy Quimby (Bean) Bamford.  Could Jennie have died or move away by this time and the album passed along to her mother?

The album measures approximately 7" by 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 47 of Jennie's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections, clarifications and additions requested]

Jennie P. Bamford was born about 1860, presumably at Fayette, Maine, the daughter of Charles H. Bamford and Nancy Quimby (Bean) Bamford.  Jennie was a student at the Maine Wesleyan and Seminary and Female College at Kents Hill at Readfield, Maine, at least in 1876.  She was out of her parents' household by the time of the 1880 Census.  Whether she was off teaching or was married or had died, I don't know.

Relatives who inscribed pages in the album had surnames of:  [and there were likely more]

  • Bamford,
  • Bean
  • Coburn
  • Currier
  • Robinson
I found a web page that has information on a family Bible that belonged, initially at least, to Jennie's grandparents John and Mary (Quimby) Bean.

If you have corrections, clarifications or additions to the information above, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1880s/1890s Autograph Album of Ella J. Oban of New Hampshire and South Dakota

[February 28, 2015 - post amended to included information from a reader; amendments in bold.]

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to New Hampshire native Ella J. Oban whose family moved to Loyalton, South Dakota, then in Dakota Territory, which attained statehood on November 2, 1889.

Most of the inscribers lived at West Lebanon, New Hampshire; and the Dakota Territory towns of Vermont City and Ipswich, both located in South Dakota.   From the reader:  "Vermont City and Loyalton are the same city. There was much "discussion" over the naming of the area at the time it was being settled. The Oban's were part of the delegation from Vermont who moved to settle the area... The town of Loyalton was dissolved on May 27, 1982."

It's interesting how New Englanders moved West, made new homes for themselves - and frequently gave their new homes a New England touch in name and appearance.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 3-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 57 of Ella's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

The title page has the handwritten word "Acconite" on it; perhaps the writer meant aconite, a poison and sometime medicinal.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Ella J. Oban was born October 21, 1869 in New Hampshire, the daughter of Israel and Sarah (Little) Oban.  The surname Oban derives from "Aubin dit Lambert"; other family members anglicized the name to Oben.   Ella's paternal uncles Henry Oban and Nathan Oban, both of West Lebanon, New Hampshire, inscribed pages in the album.

I believe Ella had five siblings, three brothers and two sisters.  Sadly, one brother, Arthur Washington Oban, born in 1874, died in 1880, presumably before Ella starting collecting sentiments in this album.

Brother Walter Edward Oban of Comit [Comet?], Montana, inscribed a page on March 26, 1897.  He was born in 1877.

Brother Thomas Israel Oban inscribed a page at Vermont City, South Dakota, on December 26, 1887.  He was born in 1872.

On October 2, 1892 at Livingston, Montana, Ella J. Oban married David O. McClanahan, son of David and Mary (Wilson) McClanahan.  David was born in Illinois about October 1863.   Ella and David would have, I believe, three children.
  1. Perley Oscar McClanahan, born March 13, 1893 in Montana.  Sadly, he died in 1921 in Lane County, Oregon as the result of a swimming accident.  Read an account of the accident here.
  2. Isaac Lorenzo McClanahan, born February 27, 1894 in Montana
  3. Howard A. McClanahan, born about 1903 in Montana
The family later lived in Washington and Oregon.  Ella died in California in 1949.  If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1889-1917 Autograph Album of Irma Rebecca Barrie of Mason City, Iowa; married John Franklin Peeler

1889-1917 autograph album that belonged to Irma Rebecca Peeler of Mason City, Iowa.  Only one inscription is out of the 1889-1890s era, and that's on the inside front cover, dated December 2, 1917 and addressed to Irma by her married name of Mrs. Peeler.

The album was presented to Irma by her mother Viola Sophia (Pynchon or Pychon) Barrie on December 25, 1889.

The album measures approximately 6" x 3-1/2" and contains the sentiments of about 50 of Irma's relatives, friends, schoolmates and pastor.  An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the signers, together with any personal information they offered, appear at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Irma Rebecca Barrie was born at New Hampson, Iowa, on June 7, 1874, the daughter of Orlo Goodrich Barrie and Viola Sophia (Pynchon or Pychon) Barrie, both of whom inscribed pages in the album.  Orlo dated his page January 1, 1890; Viola inscribed her page the same day that she gave it to Irma, December 25, 1889, at Mason City, Iowa.

Irma's sister younger sister Annie Barrie inscribed numerous pages in the album, i.e.

On July 17, 1892 at Mason City, Iowa, Irma Rebecca Barrie married John Franklin Peeler, son of Abner Charles Peeler, Jr., and Rachel (Adams) Peeler.  John's half-sister Gertie Peeler inscribed a page in Irma's album in August 1890 at Lehigh, Iowa.

Irma and John moved, at some point, to the Hood River, Oregon area.  They had, I believe, three children, daughters Edith Adele Peeler; Grace Luella Peeler; and Eldon Franklin Peeler.  John died in 1931, and Irma in 1934.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Pastor Joel Brown inscribed a page at Lehigh, Iowa, on September 19, 1890.
