George A. Stanhope, age  24; then serving in Company D of the 18th Regiment; payments made in 1864 and 1865 to his wife and daughter in Robbinston, Maine.

Found on numbered page 19 in a ledger of Robbinston, Maine, financial transactions from the mid 1860s to the 1870s.

Payments were made on behalf of:

• Susan O. Stanhope, age 20 [not sure of second digit]; wife
• Emma Stanhope, age 2; daughter
• Jane Stanhope, age 3 weeks, December 1864; daughter

Intention of Marriage: 28 March 1961, George A. Stanhope and Susan O. Laskey; certificate given on 2 April 1861; signed by A. G. Buck - Albert Gallatin Buck, the subject of another post.  Another record notes George and Susan, both of Robbinston, Maine, married on 1 April 1861.

Volunteer Enlistment of George A. Stanhope:

• George was born in Robbinston, Maine
• a farmer at the time of his enlistment
• volunteered 24 July 1862
• sworn and subscribed at Bangor, Maine, on 9 August 1862
• grey eyes, brown hair, light complexion, 5' 7" tall

• rose in rank from private to corporal
• mustered in 21 August 1862 at Bangor, Maine
• left service 6 June 1865 near Washington, D.C.; honorably discharged

Death record of George A. Stanhope:

• living at 49 Munroe Street in Calais, Maine, at time of death
• had resided in Calais for 65 years
• date of birth: 23 November 1839
• date of death: 24 May 1919; of chronic nephritis and arterioschlerosis
• George's parents: Peter Stanhope and Caroline (Davis) Stanhope.  Peter Stanhope (1817-1893) and Caroline (Davis) Stanhope (1818-1890)

In addition to Emma, George and Susan had several children born after the war, some born in Robbinston, Maine, and some born in Calais, Maine. After Susan died in 1912, George married Sophia Hatt in 1914.
