Collection of Calling Cards mostly from Carleton County, New Brunswick, and Piscataquis County, Maine

Collection of calling cards, mostly from people in Carleton County, New Brunswick, and Piscataquis County, Maine; perhaps connected by workers on the railroad.

The card above is a very small one, contained in a tiny envelope. Ora Liston Evans 1893-1987) of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. His parents were druggist Liston P. Evans and Clara Vesta (Getchell) Evans.

1870s-1892 Autograph Album that belonged to an Ida, perhaps of Beverly, Massachusetts; and perhaps a Telegraph Operator for Eastern Railroad

 


1870s-1892 autograph album that belonged to an Ida, perhaps an Ida from Beverly, Massachusetts, and presumably a telegraph operator for the Eastern Railroad. Ida may have been a member of the Webber family of Beverly, Massachusetts.

The album is in poor condition, with missing covers and perhaps some missing pages. It measures approximately 8" by nearly 5" and contains the sentiments of at least 42 of Ida's coworkers and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this list.

Some inscribers mentioned shared adventures, too lengthy to share here.

Many of the inscribers gave indication that they were telegraph operators with the Eastern Railroad, from 109 State Street in Boston, to Conway Junction in Maine, presumably in South Berwick, Maine, although the railroad itself extended all the way to Portland, Maine.

Rhoda Loantha Hale (1872-1954) was born 23 April 1872 in Northampton, Carleton County, New Brunswick, the daughter of William Hale (1829-1891) and Esther E. (Tedlie) Hale (1835-1920).   The calling cards of Rhoda's brother, Ernest William Hale (1868-1907) and William Hale, possibly her father William Hale, are included in the collection.

Rhoda would marry 3 times:

Rhoda's card has handwriting on the reverse: To Mrs. Davis From Rhoda.  Mrs. Davis was presumably a teacher, Sunday School teacher or friend of the family.

Bible presented to Lydia A. (Andrews) Goodwin (1824-1912) of Monmouth, Maine, by her husband Charles W. Goodwin (1823-1873).  The couple was childless.

The Bible contains marriage, birth and death dates for Lydia's parents, siblings and husband.

This heirloom is held at the Taconnett Falls Genealogy Library in Winslow, Maine, a repository containing many one-of-a-kind items found nowhere else, including donated and/or bequeathed papers and research into the genealogy of families in Maine, New England, the Maritimes, Quebec and beyond.


The Bible was printed by Luther Roby in 1849 in Concord, New Hampshire.
