Bible of John Benner Loose and Mary (Kensinger) Loose of Henrietta, Pennsylvania

Bible of John Benner Loose and Mary (Kensinger) Loose of Henrietta, Pennsylvania, in Blair County. Henrietta appears to be a village in North Woodbury Township.

Most of the entries refer to "my wife, "my son" and "my daughter", so were presumably inscribed by John Benner Loose himself.  The exception is the birth date of John B. Loose, which is in a different hand, presumably Mary's.

The Bible measures approximately 11-1/2" by 9" by 3-3/4".  The covers have separated and the beginning of the Bible is in sad shape, with pages missing, including the title page for the Old Testament.  The interior is in much better shape, including the Family Record pages and the New Testament title pages, including what appears to be a hand colored engraving, as shown below.

The Bible was published in 1860 by the William W. Harding Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and printed by Jesper Harding & Son, 57 South Third Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Marriages page is blank.

Birth dates are recorded for John Benner Loose and Mary (Kensinger) Loose and their eight children.  The only death recorded is that of daughter Barbara, who died September 21, 1857.  The death of father John Benner Loose, who died in 1864, is not recorded, so it appears that the Bible ceased to be used for family recording purposes sometime between 1857 and 1864.

Below, the two Births pages, which list birth dates for 10 people:
  • John B. Loose was born A.D. 1819 April the 5th Day
  • Mary Loose my wife was born A.D. 1825 April the 6th day
  • Adam Loose my Son was born A.D. 1845 November 28th day
  • Margaret Loose my Daughter was born A.D. 1846 November the 17th day
  • Barbara Loose my Daughter was born A.D. 1849 April the 16th day
  • John Loose my Son was born A.D. 1851 October the 27th day
  • George Loose my Son was born A.D. 1856 June the 1th day
  • William Loose my Son was born A.D. 1858 November the 26th day
  • Lydia Loose my Daughter was born A.D. 1861 March the 2th day
  • David Loose my Son was born A.D. 1864 January the 7th day
According to a Find-a-Grave memorial, John Benner Loose died in 1864, how long after the birth of his son David, I don't know.  Many family members, including John and Mary, are buried in the Nicodemus Cemetery at Henrietta, Pennsylvania, listed on the map as within the town of Martinsburg.

Tucked in the album is a tiny card that notes that Barbara Loose attended School for 17 days and was a "GOOD GIRL".  It's dated August 1856 and signed by teacher Longenecker.   The card has a crease that runs through the teacher's first initial, but it could be an S.  Sadly, as noted above, Barbara would die a little more than a year later.

Early 1900s Photograph Album of the Libby Family of Portland, Maine

Early 1900s photograph album, with hundreds of photographs, that appears to have belonged to the Libby family of 552 Cumberland Avenue, Portland, Maine.  It was perhaps started by Helen Maud Libby, daughter of Charles Bacon Libby and Grace (Stoddard) Libby.

The album measures about 13-1/2" by 10" and has over 100 pages, with as many as six photographs on a page; most pages have five or six.  The photographs depict family, sorority members, fellow members of the Business and Professional Women's Club; trips across the United States and Canada and Bermuda and a lengthy tour of Europe.

There's a label on the front cover: Alice White, 67 Hayden Street, South Portland, Maine 04106.  Zip Codes came into use in the 1960s, so this album apparently passed into Alice's hands long after it was filled.

At the end of this post are an alphabetical list of names and a description of many of the photographs in page order.

Below, some of the BPW group photographed in Paris:

Helen Maud Libby's mother, Grace (Stoddard) Libby, was the daughter of Ebenezer Emerson Stoddard and Rebecca Elizabeth (Gilson) Stoddard of Machias, Maine.  Below, a photograph of Rebecca Elizabeth (Gilson) Stoddard, "Mother Stoddard", with Aunt Maggie.

The Libby family made periodic trips to the Machias, Maine, area; many photographs show family members; scenes and people at Roque Bluffs, Maine, and scenery around Machias, including several photographs of decorated cars, floats and doll carriages in a parade, presumably a Fourth of July parade.

Below, the car decorated by the members of the Hannah Weston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution:

Below, a photograph of Lee Longfellow:

Below, the Bagley family at Roque Bluffs:

Many photographs deal with military matters, including parades held during the commemoration of the centennial of Maine statehood held from June 26-July 5, 1920 and on Armistice Day in 1919.  Among the participants photographed in the former parade are General Jack Pershing; Colonel Frank M. Hume and Maine soprano Emma Eames.  Below, General Pershing:

Several countries sent ships to Maine for the commemoration of the centennial of statehood.  The photographs below show the Japanese ship Kasuga [misspelled on the photograph]; and one of its officer with a woman, who may have been the wife of Bill McKay, whose name is mentioned on the page, but whose photograph is missing.

Several photographs show a man in uniform photographed on Armistice Day in 1919; the name Libby is written on the reverse.  He may have been Seth Emerson Libby, Sr., son of Charles Bacon Libby and Grace (Stoddard) Libby.

Another photograph shows a sailor and another man, who are, I believe, Malcolm H. McLauchlan and his brother Neil Stoddard McLauchlan of Machias, Maine.

Among the several photographs of the National Guard encampment at Bangor, Maine:

One interesting photograph shows the Church homestead at Naples, Maine, with Bayard Alfred Church; his wife Carrie May (Thedgar) Church; son Conrad Nathaniel Church, a Michigan newspaper publisher; and Conrad's wife Lucille L. (Frinker) Church.  Bayard's mother, Cordelia A. (Hasty) Church, was a sister of Georgianna (Hasty) Church, who married Charles Sylvester Libby, Helen Maud Libby's paternal grandfather.

19th Century Genealogy, Photograph and Memento Journal/Album of the Family of Massachusetts Native Addison Dorr of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Journal/Album containing genealogy, photographs and mementos, including locks of hair and umbilical cords, of the family of Addison Dorr and Aniceta Munoz Dorr of Buenos Aires, Argentina.  The album was then apparently passed on to their son Manuel Alberto Dorr and wife Rosalia Medina Dorr.

Found with the album is a separate booklet of the genealogy of the Dorr and Goldthwait families, and related families, of Massachusetts, written about 1851 by Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr, younger brother of Addison Dorr.  This booklet is featured in another post.

The album measures approximately 9" by 7-1/2" and is quite thick, owing to the quantity of items in it.  A list of the items written, pasted or tucked in appears at the end of this post.  Sadly, I'm not a Spanish speaker so I may have made mistakes in the listings and would appreciate corrections.

The album contains two pages dedicated to the August 11, 1855 death of Addison Dorr's father John Dorr at Boston, Massachusetts, or Dorchester, Massachusetts, as well as locks of hair of John and his wife Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr, who had died July 28, 1840.  The calling card of Enrique Manuel Dorr was presumably tucked in the page at a later date.

Below, hair of:
  • John Dorr
  • Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr
  • Aniceta Munoz Dorr, wife of Addison Dorr
  • Alfredo Dorr, presumably Manuel Alfredo Dorr, son of Addison Dorr and Aniceta Munoz Dorr and paternal grandson of John Dorr and Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr
  • Two children of Nicandro Dorr, son of Addison Dorr and Aniceta Munoz Dorr, and wife Edelmira Mancilla Dorr
  • Two children of Juana Dorr Martinez and husband Benito Martinez
  • Don Ramon Medina, a native of Madrid Spain, who was the father of Rosalia Medina Dorr, wife of Manuel Alberto Dorr

Other pages contain locks of hair, and a few umbilical cords - refer to the list of items at the end of this post.

Addison Dorr, son of John Dorr and Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr was born at Boston, Massachusetts, on April 21, 1809.  He went to Buenos Aires either in the late 1820s or early 1830s and there married Aniceta Munoz on October 27, 1831.  Aniceta was born April 17, 1811, I think in what is now Uruguay.  The page below lists the children of Addison Dorr and Aniceta Munoz Dorr.

Photographs of Addison Dorr and Aniceta Munoz Dorr.  Aniceta is shown with her son Alfredo Nolberto Dorr, who was born June 6, 1836 and who died January 26, 1863.  Alfredo married Fabia Lopez in 1862.  Their son Alfredo Nolberto Dorr was born May 30, 1863, after his father's death, but, sadly, lived only a few months.

From the context of most of the items tucked in the album, it apparently passed into the hands of Manuel Alberto Dorr, born June 15, 1843, and wife Rosalia Medina Dorr, daughter of Ramon Medina and Dolores Clemente Medina.

Rosalia was born at Puerto Alegre, Brazil, on May 3, 1845.  Manuel Alberto Dorr and Rosalia Medina Dorr had two sons and a daughter:  Manuel Alberto Dorr, born in 1863; Enrique Francisco Dorr, born in 1864; and Sara Rosalia Dorr, born in 1866.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information contained in this post, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

c1851 Handwritten Genealogy of the Dorr & Goldthwait Families of Massachusetts, by Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr (1817-1876)

c1851 handwritten genealogy of the Dorr & Goldthwait, and related families, of Massachusetts, handwritten by Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr for his older brother Addison Dorr, who had married at Buenos Aires in 1831 and was raising a family there.

The booklet, which is approximately 6-1/2" by 4", is accompanied by a journal/album of photographs, locks of hair, umbilical cords, clippings, letters, documents, etc. of the Addison Dorr family of Buenos Aires.

The genealogy includes the names and birth dates of about 275 people.   An alphabetical surname list and an alphabetical list of the people mentioned, including any details offered, appear at the end of this post.

Note:  Developing the list of people mentioned was complicated and might contain errors, not only by the transcriber but perhaps also by the author, Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr.  If something looks amiss to you, please leave a comment or contact me directly by email (under Inquiries) - thanks!

It's not an exhaustive list of people with Dorr and Goldthwait ancestry, but rather contains the branches that led to Rev. Dorr and his brother Addison, whose parents were John Dorr, born October 2, 1770, and Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr, born October 9, 1775.

Dates for deaths known to the author are also included, as are marriage dates and the names of spouses. The latest year of birth noted is 1850, and two deaths are noted in the year 1851.  Some families would go on to have more children; even the author himself had another child born after this genealogy was completed.

One of the last pages details Joseph Dorr, who came to Massachusetts from England about 1670, and Joseph's son Edward, who married Elizabeth and had five sons and two daughters with her, one of whom was Ebenezer Dorr, born in 1687; more on him farther below.

The last page details the children of Ebenezer Dorr, born in 1687, and wife Mary Boardman, born in 1689.   They married in 1709 and had seven sons and 3 daughters.  Ebenezer and Mary were the second great grandparents of Theodore Haskell Dorr and his older brother Addison Dorr.

Below, facing pages detailing the children of John Goldthwait who came from England and settled in the North End of Boston.  He married, first, Sarah Burrell; they had 4 sons and 4 daughters.  John later married Jane (?); they had a son Thomas Goldthwait, born in 1717.

Among the children of John Goldthwait and first wife Sarah (Burrell) Goldthwait was Joseph Goldthwait, born in 1706, who married Martha Lewis.  Joseph and Martha were the great grandparents of Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr and older brother Addison Dorr.

The first page in the album deals with Rev. Ebenezer Dorr, born in 1712, who settled at Mendon, Massachusetts.  Ebenezer and wife Amy (Plympton) Dorr were the great grandparents of Addison Dorr and Theodore Haskell Dorr.

Below, the facing pages detailing the 19 children of John Dorr and Esther (Goldthwait) Dorr, including Addison and his younger brother Theodore Haskell Dorr:

Below, the page listing the children of Addison Dorr and Ancieta (Munoz) Dorr, who married in 1831 at Buenos Aires.  There may have been additional children born after this booklet was completed.

The page listing the children of Rev. Theodore Haskell Dorr and wife Nancy Caroline (Richards) Dorr, who married in 1839.  One more son would be born, after this booklet was completed.
