1869-1872 Autograph Album of Octavia Masters Jordan of Thomaston, Maine

1869-1872 autograph album of Octavia Masters Jordan, "Tave", of Thomaston, Maine; some of the autographs were collected while Octavia was sailing with her mother and stepfather Sea Captain James Watts.

Octavia signed another page in the album, toward the middle, in which she described a brush with death after the bark Martha A. McNeil was struck by a steamer off Le Havre, in June 1872.

"Havre, June 17, 1872
"On board Bark Martha a McNeil leaving the dock at half past five P.M. bound to Philadelphia - came in collision with a large steamer, which struck us on our Port bow and raked us fore and aft, making a complete muck of our good bark. The scene cannot be described, but our lives are all spared.
Tave M. Jordan."

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of 40 of Octavia's relatives, friends and mariners she encountered in foreign ports.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Some of the mariners, and there may be others - refer to the list at the end of this post:

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Octavia Masters Jordan, "Tave", was born 17 March 1850 at Bath, Maine, the daughter of Sea Captain George W. Jordan and Elizabeth (Masters) Jordan, who were born at Thomaston, Maine, and Bath, Maine, respectively.  Tave's paternal grandparents were Captain Ebenezer and Belinda (Dunbar) Jordan.  Octavia's maternal grandparents were William and Octavia (Weeks) Masters.

Octavia had an older brother, George E. Jordan, who died before he was two years old.

Octavia's father, Captain George W. Jordan, sailed to England in late 1855 or January 1956 and sold his vessel there, with the intention of returning home on the Steamer Pacific.  The Pacific left Liverpool on 23 January 1856 and never arrived at her destination, New York.  The mystery of the Pacific's disappearance would not be solved for 135 years, when divers found a section of her bow, not 60 miles from Liverpool.

Widow Elizabeth (Masters) Jordan married Sea Captain James Watts at Thomaston, Maine, on 8 November 1856.  He was the son of George and Mary (Giles) Watts of Thomaston, Maine and was the recent widower of Catherine (Woodcock) Watts, who had died 20 January 1856, leaving two daughters.  There had been two sons, one of whom died in infancy and the other at about the age of nine.

Capt. James Watts and Elizabeth (Masters) Watts would have one son, James Watts, born 25 October 1862 at Thomaston, Maine.

Octavia Masters Jordan and Clarence Ashley Leighton, who went by the name Ashley, filed an intention to marry at Portland, Maine, on December 26, 1876.  Clarence was born 4 February 1849 at Waterville, Maine, son of David and Laura (Evans) Leighton.  Octavia and Ashley had a son Edward Kavanaugh Leighton, born 18 September 1878.

Octavia Masters (Jordan) Leighton died in 1935.  Her husband Ashley had died in 1916.

Octavia's maternal uncle, Silas W. Masters of Thomaston, Maine, signed a page on November 26, 1871.

Octavia's cousin, Caddie E. Owen of Bath, Maine, signed two pages, one on November 25, 1869, and the other that she didn't date.

Octavia's cousin Mose signed three pages, including one at Thomaston, Maine, on November 25, 1871.

Octavia's cousin George A. Winter signed a page at Providence, Rhode Island, on December 11, 1870.

Octavia's cousin M. E. Winter signed a page at Boston, Massachusetts, on December 3, 1870.

Octavia's cousin "Charl" signed a page.

One interesting page was unsigned but contained a sketch with the caption: "Pleasant by thy dreams".

1878-1882 Autograph Album of Julia Brown of Maitland, Nova Scotia

1878-1882 autograph album that was a Christmas present to Julia Brown of Maitland, Nova Scotia, given by her sister Maria in 1878.

The album is approximately 4" x 2-3/4", and a bit thicker than the norm; it contains the sentiments of over 60 of Julia's relatives, friends and schoolmates.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Julia Brown was born 3 June 1867 at Maitland, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Dr. Samuel Dennison Brown and Annie (Dickie) Brown.  A Julia Brown of Maitland, Nova Scotia, signed a page in the album, toward the back, but I can't be sure she was the album owner or a relative.

Julia's father, Dr. Samuel Dennison Brown was quite a character, as described on this website with the history of Maitland; scroll nearly to the end for a paragraph entitled "Village Doctors".

The C. W. Brown of Maitland, Nova Scotia, who signed a page on January 1, 1879 was presumably Julia's older brother Charles Whidden Brown.

"Rye", who called herself Julia's "sister", signed a page at ? St. Vincent, on July 19, 1880.  I don't know if she was Julia's sister, sister-in-law, religious sister or social sister.

Other relatives signed pages in the album; see the list below.  I don't believe Julia ever married.  She died in 1942 at Maitland, Nova Scotia.

Two pages list the names of, presumably, Julia's close friends and/or schoolmates.  The top page has the names: Lulu Barbrick; Clara Christie; Katie Lawrence; Mattie Dickie; Minnie Hall; Susan Cox; Edith Douglas; May Cox; Bessie Cox; and Bertha Forbes.  The bottom page lists Julia's name and that of Anna N. McCallum and Cat S. Sweet.

1885-1949 Autograph Album of Joseph Hartley Sabean of New Tusket, Nova Scotia

1885-1916 autograph album that belonged to Joseph Hartley Sabean, who went by "Hartley", of New Tusket, Nova Scotia.

Most of the autographs date from the 1880s, but Hartley's daughter, Faith Saunders Sabean, signed in 1916, and Faith's daughter Phyllis L. Vaters, signed in 1949.

The album is approximately 7-1/4" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 40 of Hartley's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the senders appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Joseph Hartley Sabean, "Hartley", was born 16 February 1860 at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, the son of Henry Charlton Sabean and Mary Ann (Randall) Sabean.  His father was a farmer, a postmaster and a deacon.

Hartley's father signed a page in the album at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, on April 25, 1886.

I think the M. A. S. who signed a page was Hartley's mother Margaret Ann (Randall) Sabean.

Hartley's brother Arthur Crawley Sabean signed a page at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, on October 26, 1884.

I believe the H. D. Sabean who signed a page on August 26, 1886 was Hartley's brother Henry Dwight Sabean.

The Charlie who signed a page at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, on May 14, 1885 was Hartley's brother Charles Franklin Sabean.

The E. May Sabean who signed a page at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, on January 3, 1888, was Hartley's sister Ella May Sabean.

On 15 December 1890 at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, Joseph Hartley Sabean married Elizabeth Eudora Tedford, daughter of Clement and Frances (Shaw) Tedford.  Interestingly, the first signed page in the album was inscribed to Hartley by E. E. T. at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, on April 8, 1887.  It's very tempting to think that E. E. T. might have been Hartley's future wife Elizabeth Eudora Tedford.

Hartley and Elizabeth farmed at New Tusket, Nova Scotia, and raised, I think, four children.  One of their children, daughter Faith Saunders Sabean, signed two pages on January 30, 1916.

Faith Saunders Sabean married Cecil Edison Vaters and had at least one child, a daughter Phyllis, who signed a page in her grandfather's album on October 19, 1949.

About 1920 Hartley and family moved to Everett, Massachusetts.  Hartley was naturalized on 10 October 1927.   He was still working at the age of 80 as a janitor, as noted in the 1940 Census of Everett, Massachusetts.  He died in 1950.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Thanks!

1870s/1880s Autograph Album of Celia A. Wentworth of Lebanon, Maine

1870s/1880s autograph album that was presented to Celia A. Wentworth of West Lebanon, Maine, on the occasion of her birthday, by Jennie C. Lord of East Lebanon, Maine.  Celia's birthday was 10 September, 1855, and the year she received the album was presumably 1878.

In fact, Jennie signed the next page in the album at East Lebanon, Maine, on 10 September 1878.  Jennie was the daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth Lord and would marry William T. Richards at Erving, Massachusetts, on 23 October 1888.

The album is approximately 8" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 67 of Celia's relatives, friends and students.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Celia A. Wentworth was born 10 September 1878 at Lebanon, Maine, the daughter of Samuel W. Wentworth and Lucinda (Jones) Wentworth, both Lebanon, Maine, natives.    Celia's parents signed facing pages in the album, Samuel on 4 June 1884 and Lucinda on 18 October 1880.

Lucinda signed another page in the album, on the same date, 18 October 1880.

Celia's paternal grandparents were Samuel and Rachel (Forbush) Wentworth.  Her maternal grandparents were Ephraim and Catherine (Wentworth) Jones.

Celia's brother Harry Alphonse Wentworth and his wife signed facing pages at West Lebanon, Maine, on 12 August 1883.

Apparently Celia spent some time as a school teacher or Sunday School teacher, as a few of the signers indicated they were her pupils.

On 30 March 1898, Celia became the third wife of widower Freeman Foss Sanborn, son of James and Mary C. (Guliver) Sanborn.   His previous wives were Lydia Senter, with whom he had a daughter and son, and Leonora E. Hanscom.

Freeman died in 1909 and Celia in 1921.

Two of the signers were Ezra Pray and his wife Martha J. (Hanson) Pray, who signed at Rochester, New Hampshire, on June 26, 1879.  Ezra Pray was a naval surgeon during the Civil War who kept a diary of his service that was acquired by the Naval Historical Association a few years ago, scanned and transcribed and then donated to U. S. Navy Medical Department Office of the Historian at Washington, D.C.

1869-1880s Autograph Album of Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey of Rockport, Maine - many autographs of Sea Captains and Pitcairn Island folk

Autograph album given to Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey of Rockport, Maine, and Boston, Massachusetts, by R. S. Luce, who was possibly Rebecca (Spear) Luce of Rockland, Maine.

See another post that features a photograph album presented to Capt. Mrs. Talpey, presumably Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey, by D. Richard Johnson, as a memento of Hull, presumably Hull, England.  Hull was a port of call for vessels captained by Henry Talpey, and his wife frequently accompanied him on his voyages.

The presentation page of the photograph album:

The first dated page in the autograph album was signed by Adelia's husband Henry Talpey on August 26, 1869, while he was the master of the S. D. Carleton, then sailing in the Pacific Ocean at Lat. 36 North, Long. 137 West, bound for San Francisco.  "All well.  All well."  The S. D. Carleton was presumably named for Adelia's father Samuel Dexter Carleton, who probably owned it or at least a part of it.

I'm thinking that Adelia was with him on this venture and on future ones, and that is how the autographs came to be collected from locations far and wide.  It's also possible that Adelia stayed home, and Henry collected the autographs for her, but it wouldn't have been unusual for wives to accompany their husbands on lengthy voyages, even if they had small children in tow, which Adelia did not.

The album is approximately 6-1/2" x 4" and contains the sentiments of 97 of Adelia's relatives and friends.  Included among these are many sea captains encountered along the way, including at Liverpool and Shanghai, and residents of Pitcairn Island.  An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

From online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions most gratefully received!]

Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey was born at Rockport, Maine, on 12 June 1841, the daughter of Samuel Dexter Carleton and Caroline T. (Ulmer) Verrill Carleton, who was the widow of William Verrill, with whom she had a daughter Sarah Jane Verrill.

Sarah Jane Verrill married Rev. William Henry Washburn, son of Rev. Job Washburn and Sarah Decker (Clough) Washburn.  They and their son Dexter Carlton Washburn signed pages in Adelia's album while they were visiting Rockport, Maine, from their home at Lewiston, Maine, on August 22, 1879.

Adelia's father, Samuel Dexter Carleton, was involved in shipping and trade and had a hand in the building of 62 vessels, including the Frederick Billings, the largest vessel built to that time and which blew up while being loaded with nitrate at Caleta Buena, Chile.

Sadly, after having five children, two of whom died in infancy, with her second husband, Adelia's mother Caroline died on 26 September 1845.  Adelia's two surviving full siblings signed pages in her album.

Her brother, William Dexter Carleton, signed a page at Rockport, Maine, on October 10, 1877.  His wife, Emma Carleton signed the facing page on the same date.  I found conflicting data online as to Emma's parents.  Some trees have her parents as James and Hannah McLane.  However, her death record, not always a reliable source, gives her parents as Leonard and Mary (Shaw) Stevens.

Adelia's sister Elizabeth Ulmer (Carleton) Luce signed a page at Rockport, Maine, also on October 10, 1877.  Her husband was William Henry Luce, son of Andrew Grant Luce and Rebecca (Spear) Luce.  It's tempting to think that the R. S. Luce who presented the album to Adelia was Rebecca (Spear) Luce.

On 15 July 1847, Adelia's father  married Harriet Newell Washburn, daughter of Rev. Job and Sarah Decker (Clough) Washburn.  One of Harriet's siblings was Rev. William Henry Washburn, mentioned above as the husband of Adelia's older half-sister Sarah Jane (Verrill) Washburn.

There was a Kate Carleton, age 8, listed with Samuel Dexter Carleton and Harriet (Newell) Carleton and Samuel's children William, Adelia and Eliza, in the 1860 Census of Camden, Maine.  At first I thought she was the daughter of Samuel and Harriet, but now I think she was their double niece, Katherine Cunningham Carleton, daughter of Samuel's brother, Elbridge Ebenezer Carleton, and Harriet's sister, Isabella Prince (Washburn) Carleton.  Perhaps there was sickness or disruption in Kate's home at the time.

On 24 November 1868, Adelia Caroline Carleton became the third wife of master mariner Henry Talpey of York, Maine, and Boston, Massachusetts.  The ceremony was conducted by Adelia's step grandfather, Rev. Job Washburn, who signed a page in the album at the age of 91.

It's possible that Adelia and Henry met because Henry served as captain on one or more of Adelia's father's vessels.  In 1877 they were apparently the first to sail the Wandering Jew, built at Camden, Maine in 1877 and owned partly by Adelia's father Samuel Dexter Carleton. The ship was about 219 feet long, with a 40 foot beam, 29 feet deep, and with a weight of 1650 tons. She was scuttled at Hong Kong in 1895 after catching fire.

Henry Talpey was born about 1819 at York, Maine, the son of Henry and Abigail (Trafton, I think) Talpey of York, Maine.  Several Talpey family members from the York, Maine, area signed pages in the album.

Adelia's husband Henry had first been married to Mary Elizabeth Stover, whom he married on 26 March 1846.  She was the daughter of David and Betsey (Simpson) Stover of York, Maine.  Henry and Mary Elizabeth had at least two children, before Mary Elizabeth (Stover) Talpey died, sometime before December 1858.
  1. Flora M. Talpey, born about September 1848 at York, Maine; she signed in Adelia's album as Flora M. Freeman, reflecting her marriage to George A. Freeman
  2. Alfred Henry Talpey, born 7 January 1852 at York, Maine; he also signed in the album, as did his wife Constance Mary Beatrice (Fryer) Talpey.  Their daughter Florence Trafton Talpey married author Ben Ames Williams.
On 13 December 1858 at Chelsea, Massachusetts, Henry Talpey married Emily Graham (Mathews) Blanchard, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Treat) Mathews and widow of Benjamin Blanchard, who died at sea.  Henry and Emily had a son Harry Blanchard Talpey, who died in infancy in 1860.  Emily herself died 12 May 1868 at Chelsea, Massachusetts.

The album reflects the trips that the newly married Henry and Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey took in the years after their marriage.  I'm not sure if they had any children or not.  I looked for them in the 1880 Census, to see if there were any children in their household, but couldn't find them, which isn't surprising, since many autographs from Pitcairn Island were acquired in February 1880.

Many of the signers in the album were sea captains they met along the way in Liverpool, England, and at Shanghai, China.   A few of the Shanghai autographs:
  • Capt. H. H. R. of Cape Cod on the Midnight
  • J. D.White of the Sea Serpent
  • Charles S. Coy on the Steamer Golden Age;
  • C. Hawes of the Steamer  Shin-King
  • G. W. Andrews of the Steamer Fire Queen
  • Nichols Pratt of Searsport - I couldn't decipher the name of his vessel
  • Benjamin F. Cutler of Stonington, Connecticut
  • M. F. Patterson, who worked the China coastal trade for about 50 years [from a reader/descendant: "Martin Francis Patterson]
  • Charles Eugene Cobb of Camden, Maine.
Henry and Adelia spent enough time at Pitcairn Island in 1880 to gather the sentiments of thirteen residents with the surnames of Christian, McCoy and Young.  Interestingly, one Pitcairn resident, Ernest Heywood Christian, sailed with Henry and Adelia on the Wandering Jew in 1881 and signed a page onboard on April 5, 1881 "far away from home".  Read more about Ernest's voyage with the Talpeys on the Wandering Jew here.  Ernest was the son of Thursday October Christian II, who also signed the page.

Another interesting signer was Liverpool sextant maker William Desilva, who married Nancy Willey of Thomaston, Maine.  He signed on June 2, 1870 and gave his address as 114 Duke Street, Liverpool.

Henry Talpey and Adelia Caroline (Carleton) Talpey died at Boston, Massachusetts, he in 1900 and she in 1909.
