1830s/1840s Autograph Album of Miss Mary E. Allen, possibly of Binghamton, New York, or Owego, New York

1830s/1840s autograph album of Miss Mary E. Allen, possibly of Binghamton, New York, or Owego, New York, or perhaps just over the Pennsylvania border.

Mary's name appears on the bottom edge of the title page, shown below.

The album, published by J. C. Riker of New York, measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over thirty of Mary's acquaintances, possibly some of them family members.  A few of the pages have engravings.

Sadly, it appears that some pages were removed from the album before it came into my hands.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Place names include:

Photograph of young siblings Samuel Prioleau Ravenel, Jr. (1868-1940) and Marguerite Amelia Ravenel (1870-1962) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Carolinas

Wonderful photograph of young siblings dressed in costume:

They were the children of Samuel Prioleau Ravenel (1822-1902) and Margaretta Amelia (Fleming) Ravenel (1833-1913)

Samuel Prioleau Ravenel, Jr., (1868-1940), according to his FindaGrave Memorial, attended Penn Charter School, Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania law school. He would practice law in Asheville, North Carolina.

Marguerite Amelia Ravenel (1870-1962) divided her time between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Highlands, North Carolina, and was interested in the arts. She and her sister Clarissa Walton Ravenel (1872-1951) were admitted to the Huguenot Society of South Carolina in 1903. Their father Samuel Prioleau Ravenel (1822-1902) was already a member.

If you have information to share on the Ravenel and/or Fleming families, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

30+ 1899-1937 letters re: Herbert Francis Hardy (1883-1979) of New York, Pennsylvania and Great Pond, Maine, and his mother Pauline Louise (Stohlmann) Hardy (abt 1853-1943)

Collection of over 30 letters, mostly written to Herbert Francis Hardy (1885-1979), with two to Herbert's mother Pauline Louise (Stohlmann) Hardy (abt 1853-1943)

Note: Pauline's name may have been Paulina Louisa. On one of her letters, she wrote on on stationery with the letterhead of J. E. Stolhmann, Publisher, Bookseller & Importer, No. 48 Pearl Street, New York - with that address crossed out and 130 Park Row, presumably her own address, written in its place.

Perhaps a reader will share how this family came to Great Pond, Maine - perhaps a summer residence that became Herbert's retirement dream as a farmer, after his previous career as an engineer.

Herbert married Ruth Monroe, a Pennsylvania native, about 1925. They had, I believe, 5 children.  By 1935, as implied by the 1940 Census, the family was living in Great Pond, Maine, in Hancock County near Aurora.

Herbert's son Herbert Francis Hardy, Jr., who grew up exploring the woods in and around Great Pond, died in 1964 in Vietnam.

The collection starts with an 1899 letter from Herbert, Sr., who gave his address as New City, New York but was on a visit to Brooklyn, New York - to his mother, whose location is not given - perhaps she was in New City or perhaps on vacation.

I believe Herbert was in the Class of 1908 somewhere, perhaps an engineering school, as one writer, Theo, writing in 1906 had stationery printed with a 1908.

The collection also includes a newspaper clipping of a photograph of a man with the surname Hussey. The clipping is not complete, but it's intimated that Mr. Hussey is the oldest resident of a certain town in New Jersey, or perhaps of the whole state.  "This is Papa is it not ? Theodore"

If you have information on the Hardy, Stolhmann or Moore families, please leave a comment for the benefit of other researchers.

1859-1887 Autograph Album of Mary C. Eaverson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1859-1887 autograph album kept by Mary C. Eaverson (1842-1916) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Mary would marry one of the inscribers, Lorenzo F. Davis (1835-1903).

The album, published by Riker, Thorne & Company and printed by Ackerman Lith., measures approximately 9-1/2" by 7-1/2 and contains the sentiments of 50 of Mary's relatives and friends, as well as six full page hand-colored engravings of birds and flowers [shown at the end of the post]. This would have been a treasured gift.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested

Mary C. Eavenson was born in 1842, the daughter of Jones Eavenson and Emily (Valentine) Eavenson, Quakers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Mary's father and his third wife Phebe inscribed a page in the album on the 6th day of the second month 1883.  Sadly, Jones Eavenson would die the next month.

It appears that Mary and her husband Lorenzo F. Davis made their home in Philadelphia.  Their marriage year is given as 1868 in A genealogical record of the descendants of John and Mary Palmer of Concord, Chester (now Delaware). Lorenzo wrote his name in two places in the album, one on an individual page at Philadelphia on the 19th day of the first month of 1883 and again on the 24th day of the 4th month of 1887 on a page shared with Aldes L. Ash.

Many of Mary's relatives inscribed pages in the album, some with the surname Eavenson and some from surnames that married into the Eavenson family.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the people mentioned in the list below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

As I was going through, it became evident that the owner was Mary C. Eavenson, but it helped that Aldes L. Ash created an Acrostic of Mary's name in 1864 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, many online trees have Mary's middle initial as E, so Aldes' inscription is especially important.

1880s Autograph Album of Irene, "Renie"; Attended Villa Livonia Boarding School in Heidelberg, Germany; Several West Point Inscribers

1880s autograph album that belonged to an Irene, or "Renie", who was presumably from Pennsylvania or New York and who spent at least a term in Heidelberg, Germany at Villa Livonia,  a boarding school for young ladies operated by the Rosenplaenter family.

The album was given to Renie by Miss Fannie at Christmas in 1882.

The album measures approximately 8" by 5" and contains the sentiments of 37 of Renie's friends, schoolmates and instructors in the United States and in Heidelberg.

Many of the inscribers were Renie's fellow students at Villa Livonia, some of whom inscribed pages in German and French, including several members of the Rosenplaenter family, who ran the school.

Interestingly, the Rosenplaenters may have been Americans rather than German, as I had at first assumed. Inscriber Carlos B. Rosenplaenter may have been the Carlos B. McKeever (1863-1936), a mining engineer, whose passport application indicates that he was born in New York City on 7 December 1863, the son of Frederick Leonard Rosenplaenter, who was also born in the United States, and Caroline Bartlett (McKeever) Rosenplaenter (1842-1929), born in Baltimore, Maryland.

This Carlos had siblings whose names matched the names of other inscribers. Other records show that Carlos was not the only male sibling to change his surname to McKeever.

Of further interest, there was another inscriber in the album with the surname McKeever - Edith McKeever, who called herself Renie's schoolmate and may have been related to Caroline Bartlett (McKeever) Rosenplaenter.

At least three of the inscriptions from New York were penned by cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point. They were :

Gertrud Marschall or, perhaps Gertrude Marshall, sketched the sweet scene below.

1857+ Autograph Album Given to Miss Elizabeth Patten by Rev. George Gordon, President of Iberia College, Iberia, Ohio

1857+ "Jenny Lind" autograph album that was given to Iberia College student Miss Elizabeth Patton by the College's first president Rev. George Gordon (1806-1867)

Rev. Gordon was, presumably, the G. G. who penned a two-page sentiment on the leaf following a sentiment left by his wife.  See Rev. Gordon's inscription farther below.

Most of the inscriptions are from the 1857 to 1862, with two from 1875. Inscribers hailed from Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and the part of Virginia that would become West Virginia.

The album, which measures approximately 7-3/4" by 6", was printed by J. C. Riker and contains the sentiments of over 20 of Lizzie's fellow students and teachers. Also in the album are several full page engravings and two sheets comprising the lyrics of On the Banks of the Dundee.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Below, the two page inscription by G. G. at Iberia, Ohio, on May 1, 1858. He was presumably Rev. George Gordon (1806-1867), noted abolitionist and first president of Iberia College. Read more about Rev. Gordon here.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Not knowing which State might have been Elizabeth's native home made searching for her difficult, but there might be a clue in one of the two inscriptions from 1875 [sadly, the other one is unsigned]: J. E. Kellogg of Thory [or Wory or perhaps Thorny] Run School House, Ohio; inscribed on March 16, 1875.

There was a John Elton Kellogg (1859-1948), whose mother was Mary (Patton) Kellogg (1837 [on the stone, but other records show 1834 or 1835] -1913), who had a sister Elizabeth Patton (1837-1866).  This Elizabeth had died before the two 1875 inscriptions, but the book may have been passed on, which was then common.

Or album owner Elizabeth Patton was someone else. Hopefully a reader will weigh in with a likely candidate.

One of the pages in the album has the inscriptions of 7 people, two of whom also inscribed individual pages. Inscriptions by:
  • Jennie Blake of Copley, Ohio
  • T. H. Graves of Columbus, Ohio
  • Lida O. Grisell of Woodbury, Ohio - Lydia O. Grisell
  • E. E. Hicks at Iberia College
  • Beulah Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana
  • Anna R. Moore of Lowellville, Ohio
  • William Thompson of Zanesville, Ohio

Lida O. Grisell, whose name appears in the image above, inscribed another page at Iberia College on February 28, 1857. She was Lydia O. Grisell, who would marry Eugene W. Romick and become a noted Society of Friends evangelist. She died in Pasadena, California, in 1879, according to an item in the Morrow County Republican of Morrow County, Ohio.

Excerpt from the March 17, 1883 issue of the St. Paul Globe:

Ohio furnishes the first instance in this country, and probably in the world, where a lady has officiated as a clergyman at a marriage ceremony. At Columbus Mr. Charles Pim and Miss Emma Bryabt were united in marriage by Mrs. Lydia G. Romick, the evangelist. It was a very pleasant wedding.

In another article, I read that officials and members from other denominations were aghast.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information provided above or in the list below, or if you have a theory as to the identity of Miss Elizabeth Patton, please leave a comment or contact me directly.
