1864-1878 Autograph Album of Frances R. Swett, "Fannie", of Eastport, Maine; Inscribers from Maine, Massachusetts & Seabrook, New Hampshire Area

Autograph album with inscriptions from 1864 to 1878 that belonged to Frances R. Swett, "Fannie", of Eastport, Maine.

The album contains many inscriptions from the Seabrook, New Hampshire, area, where the family presumably had kin, as well as inscriptions of men serving aboard vessels in the U.S. Navy and Revenue Cutter Service.

The album measures approximately 8-1/2" by 7" and contains numerous engravings throughout, plus the sentiments of nearly 100 of Fannie's relatives and friends from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Vessels mentioned in the album:

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Frances Swett, "Fannie", was born August 24, 1847 in Maine, the daughter of Nathaniel Fosdick Swett, who died during the Civil War, and Catherine May Wright, who were born in Maine and Nova Scotia respectively.   Nathaniel's father, Captain John Swett, was a native of Newburyport, Massachusetts, which may have been a factor in the number of inscribers from nearly Seabrook, New Hampshire.

I've seen several middle initials for Fannie in records, but most point to her name as Frances R. Swett.  Fannie's birth date came from her son Donald's application to the Sons of the American Revolution.

Fannie had several siblings, at least three of whom inscribed pages in her album.  Fannie's brother Jefferson Monroe Swett inscribed two pages, one individually and one with his wife Emily Jane (Munson) Swett and children Katie Wright Swett and Millidge Grassie Swett.

Brothers Jefferson Monroe Swett and George Washington Swett, who would marry Malvina Folsom, inscribed a page with several others, who included:
  • Allen Lowe Kerr
  • William Herbert Sinnott (alias "George")
  • C. Hillman
  • A. F. McAvenney [not sure of surname]
  • Frank H. Tuck

Fannie's sister Nellie May Swett inscribed two sentiments, one on the page shown below, and another on the inside back cover.  Nellie would marry Wilford Fisher Alexander.

On November 26, 1868, Fannie married Civil War veteran Walter Foster Bradish, son of Martin Bradish and Louisa Ann (Gilson) Bradish.  Walter was born in 1844.  He inscribed a page in his future wife's album at Eastport, Maine, on August 22, 1864.

Fannie and Walter raised, I believe, 7 children at Eastport, Maine.  Sadly, Fannie was one of many people who died in the 1906 Atlantic City train wreck, when a train went off a drawbridge between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Walter died in 1921.  Fannie and Walter are buried, with most of their children, in Hillside Cemetery at Eastport, Maine.  Walter's second wife Helen Marinda (Spoor) Bradish, "Rinnie", is also buried in Hillside Cemetery.

If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the inscribers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

1859-1865 Autograph Album of Jane M. Chick, "Jennie", of Frankfort, Maine

Autograph album given to Jennie M. Chick of Frankfort, Maine, by her sister Ellen Augusta (Chick) Lewis.

After Ellen's first husband, Freeman Atwood Lewis died and after she gave the album to Jennie, Ellen married Thomas Wyman Vose, who inscribed a page in the album.

There may have been a coastal trade connection to this album, as inscribers gave residences such as:
  • San Francisco, California
  • Bucksport, Maine
  • Castine, Maine
  • Orland, Maine
  • Portland, Maine
  • Winterport, Maine
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Salem, Massachusetts
  • New York City
The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 5-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 50 of Jennie's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Inscriber Aaron Holbrook gave his residence as the Ship Daylight.  I wonder if this was the steamship USS Daylight, built in 1859 and later taken over by the U.S. Navy to prevent trade by the Confederacy with other nations during the Civil War?

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Jane M. Chick, "Jennie", was born February 18, 1836, the daughter of merchant Elisha Chick, Jr., and Ruth (Avery) Chick, who were born at Frankfort, Maine, and Castine, Maine, respectively.  Jennie's mother Ruth (Avery) Chick inscribed a page in the album at Frankfort, Maine, on May 24, 1864.

Holbrook; inscribed on February 11, 1860 at Boston, Massachusetts.  Presumably the Edwin Webster Holbrook who purchased an interest in the Springvale Manufacturing Company at Springvale, Maine.  Shared the page with his wife Hannah Frances (Chick) Holbrook, "Fanny", who was a sister to album owner Jennie M. Chick.

1873-1880s Autograph Album of Ella E. (Hunt) Stover of Auburn, Maine

Autograph album that Ella E. (Hunt) Stover of Auburn, Maine, and, possibly, Biddeford, Maine, kept from 1873 through the 1880s, after her marriage to James T. Stover.

The album measures approximately 5-1/4" by 4" and contains the sentiments of 36 of Ella's relatives and friends from Maine and Massachusetts.  It's possible that some pages, including any presentation page and title page, are missing.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Ella Esther Hunt was born May 24, 1851 at Auburn or Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Nahum L. Hunt and Hannah B. (Mitchell) Hunt.   The 1860 Census of Auburn, Maine, shows that Ella then had two younger brothers, Charles and Franklin, and there may have been other siblings that I missed.

Ella married James T. Stover of Harpswell, Maine, on December 24, 1870 at Auburn, Maine.  The couple's daughter Gladys May Stover was born about 1875.  About 1881, when she was six years old, Gladys inscribed a page in her mother's album.

Ella died on March 2, 1902.  James subsequently married Susan E. Dunham.  Ella Esther (Hunt) Stover, daughter Gladys May (Stover) Manser and Gladys' husband Harry Manser, are buried in the Mount Auburn Cemetery at Auburn, Maine.

Although the Censuses show the Ella lived at Auburn, Maine, inscriber Carrie Littlefield of Lewiston, Maine, implied that Ella was living at Biddeford, Maine.  Perhaps Ella was just visiting, or perhaps the Stover family did live at Biddeford for a while.

1879-1895 Autograph Album of Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree of Hancock, Maine

Autograph album presented to Mrs. Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree by her sister-in-law Elvira J. (Cushman) Colby.

Some of the inscribers, if not Sarah herself, had gone to California, as indicated in their inscriptions, but I believe most, if not all, returned to Maine at some point.

[Note:  Many of the inscribers in this album also inscribed pages in the autograph album of Ora Spratt Jordan of Otis, Maine, featured in another post; in fact, Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree herself, and husband Asa inscribed pages!]

The presentation page in Sarah's album:

The album measures a bit more than 4" by 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of 15 of Sarah's relatives and friends.  An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

Surnames in the Album
  • Colby [[3]
  • Cook
  • Crabtree
  • Emmons
  • Jordan
  • Kingman  [6]
  • Parson
  • Simpson
  • Wooster

Elvira J. (Cushman) Colby inscribed another page in the album, and her husband Edmond Harvey Colby, who was Sarah's brother, inscribed a 3-page sentiment.  At the time they were living at Columbia, California, but I don't know if Sarah visited them there or they inscribed their pages while back in Maine.

From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:

Sarah Alexander Colby was born January 27, 1813 at Ellsworth, Maine, daughter of Eli K. Colby and Sarah Hardison (Jordan) Colby.  Another of Sarah's siblings inscribed a page in the album.  She was Charlotte Christiana (Colby) Kingman, whose husband Joseph Morrison Kingman inscribed the left facing page.

Other inscribers who expressed a kinship with album owner Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree [and there may have been more who didn't express a kinship] or who were likely relatives:
  • F. L. Colby of South Hancock, Maine.  Possibly Frank L. Colby, son of Sarah's brother Aaron Luther Colby
  • Arvilla S. Kingman of Waltham, Maine; inscribed on July 8, 1880.  Daughter of Joseph Morrison Kingman and Charlotte Christiana (Colby) Kingman, who was a sister to album owner Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree.
  • Mr. H. B. Kingman of Newport, Rhode Island; inscribed at South Hancock, Maine, on August 13, 1881.  Presumably Hudson Barzilla Kingman, son of Joseph Morrison Kingman and Charlotte Christiana (Colby) Kingman, a sister to album owner Sarah Alexander (Colby) Crabtree.  His wife Julia Evelyn (Tracy) Kingman inscribed the right facing page.
  • Mrs. J. Evelyn Kingman of Providence Rhode Island; inscribed at South Hancock, Maine, on August 13, 1881.  She was Julia Evelyn (Tracy) Kingman, wife of Hudson Barzilla Kingman, who inscribed the left facing page.
  • W. H. Kingman of Chelsea, Massachusetts; inscribed on June 8, 1881.  Possibly William Herbert Kingman, son of Joseph Morrison Kingman and Charlotte Christiana (Colby) Kingman, who was Sarah's sister.
On January 2, 1838, Sarah Alexander Colby married Asa Crabtree, son of George and Rebecca (Hopkins) Crabtree.

Asa died in 1893 and Sarah in 1899.  They're buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Hancock, Maine.
