1865 Payments on Behalf of Family in Robbinston, Maine, of Civil War Soldier John T. Garnett; in 1860s/1870s Ledger of Financial Transactions of Robbinston

John T. Garnett (1843-1933), age 21, serving in the 15th Regiment: payments made in 1865 to his parents in Robbinston, Maine.

Found on numbered page 6 - shared with the record of George E. Bean in the top half - in a ledger of Robbinston, Maine, financial transactions from the mid 1860s to the 1870s.

Payments made on behalf of:
  • Thomas Garnett, age 64; father
  • Margarett Garnett; mother [possibly stepmother]

A record in Maine, Veterans Cemetery Records, 1676-1918 reveals that John was born in 1843 in St. George, New Brunswick, not far from Dennysville, Maine, and died at Machias, Maine, on 4 June 1933. He served in Company I of the 15th Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry, having enlisted on 25 February 1865 at Belfast, Maine; discharged 30 May 1866.

The 1890 Veterans Schedules notes that John suffered from malarial disability during his service, with perhaps lasting effects.

A record in Maine Marriages, 1771-1907 shows that John T. Garnett married Matilda J. Hatt (1846-1930) on 16 May 1867 at Machias, Maine; they had several children, and John worked in a sawmill. He died at Machias on 4 June 1933 and is buried in the Court Street Cemetery there, along with his wife and other family members.

If you have information on the family of John T. Garnett, please leave a comment or contact me directly.  Online trees have inconsistent information, reflecting conflation, in some cases, between Garnett folks of the same name.

The ledger measures about 13" by 8" by 1/2" and contains entries for almost 50 families and many pages of other financial transactions. About half of the 178 numbered pages have entries. The ledger is missing its covers; the first page of what remains is shown below.

  • The numbers in parentheses indicate specific pages in the ledger.
  • Many of the men listed below were born in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia and may have returned to Canada after the War.  See the map below to see how close New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were, particularly in the Age of Sail.

  1. My 2Xs great grandmother was Emma J Garnett according to her obiturary, born 1-March-1843 in St. John County, New Brunswick, Canada. It lists a brother John T. Tenan of Machias, ME and a sister Mrs. Alice MacMaster of Eastport, ME. Since Emma married in Cherryfield, Washington County, ME and lived there I assume this John T. Tenan you have is her brother. I am interested in more information and would be willing to share if I can connect to the John T. Tenan you have.

    1. Interesting! Did you mean John T Garnett? Everything I know about the men listed in this journal is from the Internet, including FindaGrave, but I'd be interested in what you have to share.
