1864/1865 Payments On Behalf of Wife and Child in Robbinston, Maine, of Civil War Soldier Samuel Ross; in 1860s/1870s Ledger of Financial Transactions of Robbinston

Samuel Ross, age 29; then serving in Company D of the 11th Regiment; payments made in 1864 and 1865 on behalf of his wife and child in Robbinston, Maine. "Must. in 21 Oct. 1864 Belfast"

Found on numbered page 28 in a ledger of Robbinston, Maine, financial transactions from the mid 1860s to the 1870s.

Payments were made on behalf of:
  • Maria R. Ross, age 22; wife - Rebecca Maria (Berry) Ross
  • William Harrison Ross, son; 5 months

Samuel L. Ross (about 1832-1914), born "On the Ocean", son of James Ross and Margaret (?) Ross, immigrants from Scotland and/or Ireland - records vary

Maine Marriages, 1771-1907:
  • Samuel Ross and Miss Maria R. Berry
  • married 15 September 1862 at Robbinston, Maine
  • conducted by Rev. S. H. Coll?, possibly Methodist minister Samuel H. Collier
  • recorded by Robbinston, Maine Town Clerk A. G. Buck - Albert Gallatin Buck (1822-1901)

Rebecca Maria Berry was born 24 August 1840, daughter of William B. Berry and wife Mary Ann (Stump ?) Berry. Rebecca's oldest sibling was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1834; it appears that the family subsequently moved to Perry, Maine.

Censuses

After the 1865 Census of Massachusetts, it appears that Samuel and the rest of his family separated, with Samuel working in Perry, Maine, and his family living in Massachusetts.  This separation might have resulted from simple economic necessity, or perhaps it was more serious, as in the 1900 Census, Samuel described himself as divorced.

The ledger measures about 13" by 8" by 1/2" and contains entries for almost 50 families and many pages of other financial transactions. About half of the 178 numbered pages have entries. The ledger is missing its covers; the first page of what remains is shown below.

  2. That's in blog post in 4th paragraph, as a link from his name. But there are a few others that I haven't found burial sites for - hope you can supply those!
