She was Emma Hunter (Porter) Gilman (1871-1960), daughter of Arthur Jeremy Porter (1850-1944) and Rosabelle Marissa (Fiske) Porter (1846-1928), "Nellie", and wife of Fred Vivian Gilman (1871-1945).
Emma and Fred, natives of Strong, Maine, and West Farmington, Maine respectively, married on 7 September 1895 at Strong. At the time they were both living in Madison, Maine, where Fred was a merchant and Emma a milliner.
They lived for a while in Brooklyn, New York, with Emma's parents and later returned to Farmington, Maine, where Fred worked as a rural mail carrier and later as a chief of police.
