Cabinet photograph of a man identified on reverse as Sherman Hooper of Tenants Harbor, Maine. The photograph was taken by the Levi Morse studio of Thomaston, Maine.
I couldn't find a Sherman Hooper but I did find a Sherman Blake Hupper, and I feel that this is probably he. Hopefully a reader will recognize him from family albums and let me know for certain, via the comments box at the bottom of the page or email.
I'll assume this fellow is Sherman Blake Hupper unless notified otherwise.
Sherman Blake Hupper was born on 8 January 1865 in St. George, Maine, the son of Elias Alexander and Rebecca (Blake) Hupper. His paternal grandparents were Levi and Jane (Allen) Hupper of St. George, Maine. I found references that Levi died at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico; perhaps he was a mariner.
Sherman Blake Hupper's maternal grandparents were Warren and, possibly, Hannah Blake, also of St. George. Hannah perhaps had died between the 1860 and 1870 Censuses, as by the time of the 1870 Census, Warren was married to a Jane.
Sherman's parents divorced, and both remarried. In 1877, Rebecca married Nelson Hall, who was born abt 1843 in Maine, the son of Lorenzo and Hannah (Holbrook) Hall. He served in the Civil War as a member of the Berdan's Sharpshooters. He lost his right arm at Chancellorsville.
Elias Alexander Hupper married Marguerite Jennette Scott at Montreal 4 February 1876. She was born 28 April 1851 at Lancaster, Canada, possibly Ontario. Her parents were Thomas and Isabel (Ross) Scott.
Sherman lived with his mother and stepfather.
As best as I can gather, Rebecca adopted a girl named Myrna Estelle Wiley, possibly the daughter of Anna Wiley, who was listed as a boarder with Nelson and Rebecca on the 1880 Census. Later on, Myrna became the wife of Sherman Blake Hupper. They raised a family of six children in Massachusetts.
