This is perhaps a graduation photograph of Jacob Kleinhans, Jr., who graduated from Colby College at Waterville, Maine, in 1894. The photograph was taken by Preble and Jordan of 66 Main Street, Waterville, Maine.
The name Jacob Kleinhans, Jr. appears in a 1901 listing of alumni who belonged to the Phi Beta Kappa chapter of Colby College. Jacob, who was in the Class of 1894, was listed as a teacher in Milford, Pennsylvania. Sadly, he had an asterisk before his name, signifying that he had died.
From brief online research, hopefully correct: [corrections and additions welcome!]
Jacob Kleinhans, Jr., was born about 1873 at Milford, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Kleinhans Sr. and his second wife Mary M. (?) Kleinhans. Jacob Sr. was born about 1822 in New Jersey, the son of Johann Jacob Kleinhans and wife Eva (Butz) Kleinhans.
I don't yet have the maiden name or parents of Jacob Jr.'s mother Mary M. Hopefully a reader will be willing to share this information.
It's possible that Jacob Kleinhans, Jr. married before his untimely death, but he was still single when he was enumerated in the 1900 Census of Baltimore, Maryland, where he was working as a school teacher. Presumably, from the Phi Beta Kappa listing, he left his position at Baltimore shortly after enumeration and took a teaching position back home at Milford, Pennsylvania.
