1867-1900s Autograph Album of Marion P. Brown of Plattsburgh, New York; Before & After her Marriage to Levi Sewall Packard

Autograph album that was given to Marion P. Brown of Plattsburgh, New York in 1867, possibly by Mrs. Vesta A. (Childs) Balch, second wife of William Skinner Balch, as the page below seems to suggest.

Marion revisited her treasured album many times and kept it going until the early 1900s.  After her 1877 marriage to educator Levi Sewall Packard in 1877, she added her married name to what had been a blank front end paper.   She also added notes about marriages and deaths to many of the pages.

The album measures only 6-1/2" x 4" but is extremely thick, more than 1-1/2".  With every page used and signers sharing many pages, either from a common bond or from lack of a blank page, the album contains the sentiments of over 400 people, with additional clipped autographs of the rich and famous.

The sentiments included those left by:
  • Marion's relatives and those of her husband Levi Sewall Packard
  • Friends in the Plattsburgh, New York, area, where Marion grew up
  • Students and instructors at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, which Marion apparently attended about 1873
  • People met at musical conferences
  • Ministers, theologians, social activists, prohibitionists
  • Friends in the Saratoga Springs, New York, area, where Levi Sewall Packard was Superintendent of Schools
  • Marion's students at Ticonderoga, New York
  • Visitors at "Packard Square", the large boarding house that Levi and Marion ran at Pinebluff, North Carolina, starting in 1888.
In the back of the album, Marion pasted two 1863 North Carolina notes, one for ten cents and one for five cents.  The ten cent note has a hornet's nest graphic - to convey the image of defiance, according to the North Carolina Digital History site.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions welcome!]

Marion P. Brown was born January 20, 1846 at Plattsburgh, New York, the daughter of William G. Brown and Elizabeth (Brock) Brown.  Marion's father William G. Brown and brother Henry W. Brown left sentiments in the album, as did several other people with the surname Brown; refer to the list below.

On June 26, 1877, Marion became the second wife of Levi Sewall Packard, son of Levi and Clarissa (Sanford or Sandford) Packard of Massachusetts.  Clarissa inscribed a page in the album.  According to his biographical record in an Amherst College publication, Levi Sewall Packard was born at Spencer, Massachusetts, on June 7, 1834.  He was presumably the L. S. Packard who inscribed a page in the album on December 29, 1876.

Levi's first wife, Ann Elizabeth (Traver) Packard, died in 1875.  I believe Levi and Ann had five children, but they may not all have survived to adulthood.  Levi and Marion had at least two children together:
  1. Elizabeth Vesta Packard, born April 30, 1878 in New York and perhaps named after Vesta A. (Childs) Balch.  Elizabeth died in 1908 in North Carolina.
  2. David Sanford Packard, born March 28, 1881; married Louise Adelle McNeille.  David died in 1972 in North Carolina.
Levi and Marion and family moved to Pinebluff, North Carolina, in 1888 and operated "Packard Square", a large family boarding house.

Marion died in 1916 and Levi in 1919; they're buried at the Pinebluff Cemetery at Pinebluff, North Carolina.
If you have corrections and/or additions to the information above, or information on any of the signers listed below, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Because the list of signers is so long, I can't show many images from the album.  If there is one you'd like to see, please let me know.

  1. Hi Pam- Wm Skinner Balch and Vesta Childs are my 3rd great-grandparents. Now that you have listed all the pertinent information in the autograph book, would you be willing to part with it? I'd be very happy to continue look-up requests in the same manner you have.I'd also love to have something they have held and loved. I've been doing genealogy since 1982, preserving records for our entire family, so this would be a treasure for me and used well. I was so excited to see this tonight. Sheila Lein (granddtr of Elizabeth Jane Balch) rwlein@comcast.net Please advise.

  3. Hi Pam, I just want to thank you again for taking the time to transcribe all of this! As I move forward into my research into the family, I have been able to come back and use some of your notations (such as Judd cousins) as verification that I am on the right track! If I have not shared with you before, Marion's father Wm. G Brown (my G-G-G Grandfather), who drew the bird, was an abolitionist in Plattsburgh. He actually housed the anti-slavery library!
