Autograph Album Presented in 1856 to Martha Washington Naill of Linganore, Maryland

Autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Martha Washington Naill, "Mattie", of Linganore, Maryland.

See another post that features a similar autograph album presented by I. W. W. on January 1, 1856 to Mattie's sister Susannah Ann Marie Naill.

The album measures approximately 7-1/2" by 6-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 20 of Mattie's relatives and friends.  It was published by J. C. Riker of New York, New York and contains 6 full page engravings.

An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.

From brief online research, hopefully correct:  [corrections and additions requested]

Martha Washington Naill, "Mattie", was born January 10, 1842 in Maryland, possibly Frederick County, the daughter of David Washington Naill and Susannah (Maurer ?) Naill.   Mattie had several other siblings than sister Susannah.  Their younger sister Isabella Bannon Naill added to a page inscribed by four others, one of whom was album owner Mattie herself and Mattie's future husband John Henry Chew.

On April 28, 1881, Mattie became the second wife of John Henry Chew, whose first wife, Matilda (Crusey) Chew, had died in 1878, after the birth of, I believe, 5 children.  John was born in Maryland, possibly at Uniontown, on July 31, 1822.

In addition to the page above, John inscribed facing pages in 1883, after their marriage.

John died in 1889 and Mattie in 1921.  John is buried in the Carrollton Church of God at Carrollton, Maryland; Mattie is buried in the Greenwood Church Cemetery at New Windsor, Maryland.

In addition to Mattie's sister Isabella and her husband John Henry Chew, other relatives who inscribed pages:
  • Cousin Amanda of Zanesville, Ohio
  • Keziah or Mariah, who inscribed a page on September 9, 1858
  • Cousin Elizabeth A. Snader, "Lizzie", daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie's father David Washington Naill
  • Cousin Mollie A. Snader, presumably Mary A. Snader, daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie's father David Washington Naill
  • Mattie A. E. Snader - Martha A. E. Snader, daughter of Jacob Snader and Mariah (Naill) Snader, sister of Mattie Washington Naill's father David Washington Naill
  • D. M. Sparks of Wyanet, Illinois - Davis Washington Sparks, son of  Joseph S. Sparks and Elizabeth (Naill) Sparks, who was a sister to Mattie's father David Washington Naill.
