1833 Deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire; from a Handwritten Journal Covering the Years 1826-1850

Note:  Please let me know if you find errors in transcription or information - thanks in advance!

Page from a journal handwritten by an unknown person, but likely by a descendant of William Ripley, that lists the deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire from 1826 to 1850.  This post covers deaths in 1833.

Interestingly, an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register of 1917, pages 338-342, describes the project undertaken by William Ripley to record deaths in Cornish, New Hampshire, from 1775 until his death in 1818, upon which the task was given over to subsequent descendants.

The journal here is, I believe, either a copy of the original records, by a descendant of William Ripley, or was kept as the deaths happened by William Ripley's son Col. James Ripley until his death in 1842, leaving no descendants, and then by William Ripley's grandson Deacon James Ripley Wellman, son of Althea (Ripley) Wellman.

See other posts that list deaths in the years:

The journal measures approximately 9-3/4" by 8" and consists of the covers, 8 interior pages, with entries also on the inside back cover.

"Con" might refer to "Consumption", whether tuberculosis or an all-inclusive term for wasting away.  "OA" is presumably "Old Age".  Chm or Cm presumably refer to "Church Member".  Some pages mention "Bm", which might be "Baptist member".

If you notice spelling and interpretation errors and/or if you have clarifying information or alternative identities for any of the people mentioned, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Sources for the information, hopefully correct, that I've added to the listings:
The entries are a bit jumbled, so be forewarned that the deaths might not have occurred in the month noted, and some dates don't match other sources, but are close and may even be more dependable, if this journal is truly a primary source.

January
  • 1 - Widow Rickard, OA 81.  Presumably Susannah (Wright) Rickard, born in 1752, widow of Abner Rickard (1745-1827); mentioned on page 314 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Abner Rickard's death is mentioned in the post that features deaths at Cornish in 1827.
  • 8 - William Hall, 22.  Perhaps the William Hall born 19 July 1810 in Plainfield Township, New Hampshire, in Sullivan County, son of Peter B. Hall and Rachel (possibly Emery) Hall, as shown on the birth record.
February
  • 21 - An Infant of I. Smith Jr. - 1 day.  Infant of Ichabod Smith, Jr., as mentioned on page 329 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
April - some of the entries are out of order and may not even be in April
  • 12 - A daughter of William Allen - 16 years.  There's an entry for a William Allen and Betsey (Swinnerton) Allen on page 4 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2, but only two children are listed for them, a son and a daughter Lucy born in 1812.  It's possible there were more children, including a daughter born about 1817, or that the journal writer or William Henry Child got the facts wrong.
  • 15 - A Child of William Rawson - 2.  She was Catherine Rawson, born March 11, 1831, daughter of William Rawson and Amanda (Lamberton) Rawson, as mentioned on page 298 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 29 - A daughter of Wd Atwood - 18.  Could she be Hannah Atwood, born in 1813 and died, according to her FindaGrave memorial, on 19 April 1833, daughter of Joshua Atwood and Sarah (McAdams) Atwood?  This Hannah is mentioned on page 6 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Perhaps either the author of the Journal or William Henry Child got the date wrong, or the daughter is someone else entirely.  Joshua Atwood died in 1813, so Sarah would have been a widow, as the entry seems to suggest.
  • 20 - Child of Mr. Emerson - 3.  Presumably John Emerson, who was born in 1830, possibly the son of John Emerson and a subsequent wife to Mehitable (Atwood) Emerson, who died in 1828, according to the journal.  The child John Emerson is mentioned on page 5 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2, as being the son of Mehitable (Atwood) Emerson and John Emerson.
  • 27 - A Child of E. Williams - 5
  • 28 - Widow Prudence Fitch, Cm.  She was Prudence (Read) Fitch, born in 1757, and widow of Hezekiah Fitch, as mentioned on page 154 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Her Find a Grave memorial gives her death date as 29 April 1833; there's a photograph attached but I can't read any dates.
May
  • 1 - A daughter of L. Churchill - 12.  Presumably Emily Churchill, born in 1821, daughter of Lewis Churchill and Desiree Barker Brewster Churchill, as mentioned on page 89 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, Volume 2.
  • 3 - A daughter of Curtus Knights - 11.  Presumably Melinda Atwood Knight, daughter of Betsey (Atwood) Knight and Curtis Knight, as mentioned on page 5 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 16 - A child of David Comings - 1 year.  Israel A. Comings, born in 1832, son of David Comings and Harriet (Hall) Comings, as mentioned on pages 116 and 117 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 24 - Deacon Josiah Stone, Cm, 83.  Mentioned in pages 350 and 351 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Deacon Stone's second wife, Margaret (Williams) Stone, died in 1826; see the post that deals with deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire, in 1826.
July
  • 26 - A child of Burnap - 2.  Mary Elizabeth Burnap, born December 25, 1831, daughter of Arunah Burnap and Betsey (Burr) Burnap, as mentioned on pages 43 and 44 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
September
  • 11 - Lt. William Deming, 78.  Mentioned on page 131 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
November
  • 22 - Perez Jackson, Jr., 34; also seen as Peres Jackson, Jr.,  As Perez Jackson, Jr., he is mentioned as having died on November 23, 1833, on page 221 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
December
  • An Infant of A. Nevins.  Presumably the son of Alfred Nevens and Susan (Hilliard) Nevens, as mentioned on page 276 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.

Whole number in 1833 - 17
