1832 Deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire; from a Handwritten Journal Covering the Years 1826-1850

Note:  Please let me know if you find errors in transcription or information - thanks in advance!

Page from a journal handwritten by an unknown person, but likely by a descendant of William Ripley, that lists the deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire from 1826 to 1850.  This post covers deaths in 1832.

Interestingly, an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register of 1917, pages 338-342, describes the project undertaken by William Ripley to record deaths in Cornish, New Hampshire, from 1775 until his death in 1818, upon which the task was given over to subsequent descendants.

The journal here is, I believe, either a copy of the original records, by a descendant of William Ripley, or was kept as the deaths happened by William Ripley's son Col. James Ripley until his death in 1842, leaving no descendants, and then by William Ripley's grandson Deacon James Ripley Wellman, son of Althea (Ripley) Wellman.

See other posts that list deaths in the years:

The journal measures approximately 9-3/4" by 8" and consists of the covers, 8 interior pages, with entries also on the inside back cover.

"Con" might refer to "Consumption", whether tuberculosis or an all-inclusive term for wasting away.  "OA" is presumably "Old Age".  "Ch" and Ch m" presumably refer to "Church" and "Church member".  Some pages mention "Bm", which might refer to "Baptist member".

If you notice spelling and interpretation errors and/or if you have clarifying information or alternative identities for any of the people mentioned, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Sources for the information, hopefully correct, that I've added to the listings:
The entries are a bit jumbled, so be forewarned that the deaths might not have occurred in the month noted, and some dates don't match other sources, but are close and may even be more dependable, if this journal is truly a primary source.

January
  • 4 - Asenath Smith, daughter of Gideon Smith - 29.  Asenath Potiphera [Potipherah] Smith, born January 1, 1803, daughter of Gideon Smith and Lucy (?) Smith, as mentioned on page 328 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 6 - Infant of B. S. Lewis.  Child of Benjamin Sidney Lewis and Abigail (Westgate) Lewis, as mentioned on page 259 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
March
  • 5 or 6 - Mrs. Betsey Cobb, wife of Francis Cobb, Jr. - Cm, 53. She was Betsey (Bruce) Bugbee Cobb, third wife of Francis Cobb, Jr., as mentioned on pages 92 and 93 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 21 - Mrs. Betsey, Wife of Benjamin Ayers - 27.  Betsey (Alden) Ayers, born July 31, 1805, daughter of Jesse Alden and Sarah (Rice) Alden, as mentioned on pages 3 and 10 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
April
  • 12 - A Child of Gamaliel Bartlett - age ?.  The father, Gamaliel Bartlett, may have been born about 1795, a son of William Bartlett and Amy (?) Bartlett.  William and Amy are mentioned on pages 18 and 19 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  This may be the grave of the Gamaliel Bartlett, whose son's death is noted here.
  • 25 - Mr. Moses Harrington, 64 Cm.  Moses Harrington, born in 1867, son of Ebenezer Harrington and Elizabeth (?) Harrington, and husband of Abigail, as noted on page 194 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 28 - Child of Z. Edminster, Jr.  Elizabeth Edminster, born in 1831, daughter of Zebedee Edminster and Tirzah (York) Edminster, as mentioned on pages 145 and 146 in History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Elizabeth's mother, Tirzah (York) Edminster is mentioned on page 435.
The next entry fits between the April and May entries, but from research, it appears to belong in May.

May
  • Old Mr. Young OA.  Presumably Thomas Young, born in 1755 in Brookfield, Massachusetts; died May 5, 1832 at Cornish, New Hampshire, as mentioned in History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 4 - Wife of ? William Clement, Jr., Con.   Note: The post containing 1829 deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire, includes an entry for the April 8 death of a child of William Clement, Jr.
June
  • 9 - Old Mrs. Allen, Wife of Mr. John Allen - 73.  I wonder if she was the Sally Allen, of a similar age, who is shown as having died on June 10, 1831, on page 4 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  That Sally's FindaGrave memorial also states her death year as 1831; I can't distinguish a date from the photograph of her stone.
July
  • 30 - Widow Zerviah Penniman, 84 Cm.  She was Zurviah (?) Penniman, born about 1748, assuming she is the woman buried in the Chase Cemetery at Cornish, New Hampshire.
August
  • 5 - Mr. Amasa Dutton
September
  • 1 - A daughter of Col. L. Chase - 15.  Presumably Nancy Malvina Chase, born August 10, 1817, daughter of Col. Lebbeus Hall Chase, as mentioned on page 66 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 27 - Wife of John Fellows - 37.  She was Temperance (York) Fellows, born in 1805 and the first wife of John Fellows, as mentioned on page 153 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
October
  • 12 - Captain S. Bryant, 73.  He was Capt. Sylvanus Bryant, born May 5, 1758, son of Sylvanus Bryant and Mary (Sears) Bryant, as mentioned on pages 34 and 35 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • 31 - Mr. Leonard Comings on his return from Boston.  He was presumably the Leonard Comings mentioned as having died on October 25, 1832, on page 109 of the History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Perhaps because the death was not in Cornish, the author of the journal did not learn of Leonard's death until the 31st.
December
  • 30 - Eunice Chase, daughter of Clement Chase - Con 15.  She was Eunice Dana Chase, born in 1818, daughter of Clement Chase and his second wife Olive (Spaulding) Clement, as mentioned on page 80 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.

Whole number in 1832 - ? 19.   [My count is 18.]
