1836 Deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire; from a Handwritten Journal Covering the Years 1826-1850

Note:  Please let me know if you find errors in transcription or information - thanks in advance!

Page from a journal handwritten by an unknown person, but likely by a descendant of William Ripley, that lists the deaths at Cornish, New Hampshire from 1826 to 1850.  This post covers deaths in 1836.

Interestingly, an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register of 1917, pages 338-342, describes the project undertaken by William Ripley to record deaths in Cornish, New Hampshire, from 1775 until his death in 1818, upon which the task was given over to subsequent descendants.

The journal here is, I believe, either a copy of the original records, by a descendant of William Ripley, or was kept as the deaths happened by William Ripley's son Col. James Ripley until his death in 1842, leaving no descendants, and then by William Ripley's grandson Deacon James Ripley Wellman, son of Althea (Ripley) Wellman.

See other posts that list deaths in the years:

The journal measures approximately 9-3/4" by 8" and consists of the covers, 8 interior pages, with entries also on the inside back cover.

"Con" might refer to "Consumption", whether tuberculosis or an all-inclusive term for wasting away.  "OA" is presumably "Old Age".  Chm or Cm presumably refer to "Church Member".  Some pages mention "Bm", which might be "Baptist member".

If you notice spelling and interpretation errors and/or if you have clarifying information or alternative identities for any of the people mentioned, please leave a comment or contact me directly.

Sources for the information, hopefully correct, that I've added to the listings:
The entries are a bit jumbled, so be forewarned that the deaths might not have occurred in the month noted, and some dates don't match other sources, but are close and may even be more dependable, if this journal is truly a primary source.

February

March
  • Wife of Nahum Sturtevant.  Sarah (Chase) Sturtevant, born March 2, 1783; first wife of Nahum Sturtevant; she died on March 16, 1836, as mentioned on page 360 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
  • A Child of Daniel Bryant - 2 mo.  The child was George W. Bryant, born January 22, 1836; son of Daniel Bryant and Chloe (Hildreth) Bryant; George died on March 17, 1836, as mentioned on pages 38 and 39 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.

April
  • 19 - Miss Clarissa Cobb, Con.  Possibly Clarissa Harlow Cobb, born September 18, 1796, daughter of Ebenezer Cobb and Mary (Harlow) Porter Cobb; this Clarissa is mentioned on pages 93 and 94 as having died on April 13, 1835, in History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  This entry is on the right side of the page, with a link down the middle, indicating 1835 deaths to the left and 1836 deaths to the right.  This is in the right column, but perhaps the journal writer made a mistake, another clue pointing to the fact that this journal might not have been written as the deaths occurred but perhaps later on when copying the original.  Or perhaps Clarissa did die in 1836.
May
  • 2 - A Child of Jesse Wyman - 12-1/2 mo.  The child was Edward Dorr Wyman, born April 18, 1835, son of Jesse Wyman and Mary (Dorr) Wyman, as mentioned on pages 433 and 434 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
June
  • 23 - Miranda Rickard, about 27.  Presumably the Miranda Rickard, born September 8, 1809, daughter of Elijah Rickard and second wife Tenty (Ransom ?) Rickard.  Miranda's date of death is noted as June 22, 1836 on page 313 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
July
  • 20 - A Child of Moses Chase 2nd.  Henry Dwight Chase, born March 19, 1833, son of Moses Chase (1799-1864) and Fidelia (Alden) Chase, as mentioned on page 81 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Henry's gravestone shows his date of death as July 19.
September
  • 15 - Susan, daughter of Peleg Weld - Cm, 21.  Susanna B. Weld, born March 15, 1815; daughter of Peleg Weld and Patty (Foster) Weld; as mentioned on page 394 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  Susanna B. Weld had an older sister Susanna, who lived from 1809 to 1814.
  • At Chester NH, Mr. Jabez Shapley - 90 or [91 ?]

  • 27 or 28 - Mrs. Hannah, Wife of Benjamin Ayers - 31.  She was Hannah (Alden) Ayers, second wife of Benjamin Ayers and twin sister of his first wife Betsey (Alden) Ayers; as mentioned on pages 10 and 11 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.
October
  • 16 [or 10] - Deacon John L. Kimball, Cm, 74.  John Lovell Kimball, mentioned on page 246 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  His Find a Grave memorial gives his death date as October 1, 1838, but I'm not able to determine the date from the image of the stone attached to the memorial.  The cited book gives the death year as 1836.
  • 27 - Mr. Samuel Chase, 83.  I found a Find a Grave memorial for a Samuel Chase, age 84, who died in October 1838, presumably the same Samuel Chase mentioned as having died in 1838 on pages 63 and 64 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.  It's possible that death year mentioned in the book is in error, and that information was then used in the Find a Grave memorial.  Or perhaps the mistake is in the handwritten journal.
November
  • 21 - Mr. John Lothrop, 79, as mentioned on page 261 of History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire, with Genealogical Record, 1763-1910, Volume 2.

  • From Mr. Rowell, an Infant he does not recollect

Making in 1836 - 22
