1880s autograph album that belonged to Elizabeth J. Frutchey, "Eliza", of Wilmot, Pennsylvania. The album contains inscriptions from Eliza's relatives, friends and teacher from Pennsylvania, with others from Kansas and New York.
Eliza's name and that of Edward Cotter of Atwood, Kansas, appear on the inside front cover.
The album measures approximately 6-1/4" by 4" and contains the sentiments of 55 of Eliza's relatives, friends and teacher Loanna V. Dodge, whose page is shown below. An alphabetical list of the inscribers, together with any personal information they offered, appears at the end of this post.
Surnames in the Album
From brief online research, hopefully correct - corrections and additions requested:
Elizabeth J. Frutchey, "Eliza", was born in 1872 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Frutchey and Sophronia (Whipple) Frutchey. Eliza had several siblings, at least three of whom inscribed pages in her album.
Sister Hattie A. Frutchey inscribed a page that she shared with Bessie Corey.
Another page was inscribed by B. Corey in December 1882. Was this another page inscribed by Bessie Arey, or perhaps by Burleigh John Arey, who would become Hattie A. Frutchey's husband?
Eliza's brother Reed G. Frutchey inscribed a page on February 17, 1884.
Other inscribers who expressed kinship with Eliza or with the surname Frutchey:
- Emma V. Farr of Wilmot, Pennsylvania; inscribed on December 11, 1882. Eliza's cousin
- Jessie; inscribed at Wilmot, Pennsylvania, on June 10, 1883. Eliza's sister Jessie Frutchey
- Dora Frutchey of Wilmot, Pennsylvania; inscribed on November 11, 1882. Presumably the Dora Frutchey whose father, Christian Frutchey, was a brother to Eliza's father William H. Frutchey
- Eleanor Frutchey; inscribed on January 19, 1884 at Wilmot, Pennsylvania
Sometime before the birth of Eliza's son, Martin Elery Brown, in 1894, she had married Martin Luther Brown of Pennsyylvania. They lived in Pennsylvania and New York. Martin died in 1934 and is buried in the Wyalusing Cemetery at Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. Eliza is also buried there, but I can't rmake out the year of her death on her stone. She was still alive at the time of the 1930 Census of Binghamton, New York.
